Chapter 1952 Fight to the Death

Chapter 1952 Fight to the Death

Carou traveled east without rest.

It had to reach the castle as soon as possible and report to its king about the recent developments in Adventurers' City.

Once beyond the Lamiyan Mountains, it would stop by at the human settlements and arrange for maidens to be transported to the castle.

A few days since its departure from the city, it noticed something peculiar.

"Hmm?" Its eyes narrowed as it sensed three presences in the far distance.

Two humans and a beast.

Carou's eyes slowly narrowed when it noticed one of them sensing its approach. Immediately after, the beast vanished and then only the two humans remained.

"How perceptive," it murmured, its lips curling into an amused smirk.

It picked up speed, and within moments, it had arrived at the edge of the clearing. Noticing the corpses strewn around, it exclaimed slightly.

"Well, well, well. Who do we have here?"

Hands clasped behind its back, Carou radiated a confident aura as though everything was within control. It took note of the two humans, carefully studying them.

One was a tall, muscular human with an imposing figure. His hands were drenched in the blood of the monsters he had slain. A wolf hide was draped lazily across his shoulders.

The other human, although gaunt and emaciated, somehow managed to radiate far more danger than his partner.

"You're a real killer, aren't you?" Carou said to Adam.

When it noticed the map of hideous scars on Adam's body, its eyes narrowed.

Those are clear signs of torture…

Could it be!

Its thoughts naturally drifted to the human who was supposedly tortured by the zealot werewolf. But when it shifted its gaze to the human's hands and found both intact, it discarded the thought entirely.

No, it's a different person, it confirmed inwardly.

"Where's that little beast I sensed just a while ago?" It asked, looking around the clearing, but finding no trace of Valerian.

"Hmm, how peculiar indeed." It raised a hand and stroked its goatee.

Meanwhile, Adam and Luca were on extremely high alert. Furthermore, seeing how nonchalant the monster appeared to be, they couldn't help but turn even more solemn.

'What do you say, Constantine?' Luca's grave voice sounded through the communication artifact.

'Can you fight?'

Adam's expression was calm, though his eyes betrayed his inner feelings.

'There is no other option but to fight!' he replied through mental transmission.

'This monster specializes in speed. We will not be able to escape.'

Luca's expression turned grim. He had noticed how abruptly the goat monster had appeared at the edge of the clearing. He hadn't even been able to sense its presence until it showed itself.

'Very well, then.' The Lone Wolf's demeanor changed as he circulated mana inside his body.

'Fight to the death!'

Adam prepared to cast magic as he replied, 'I'll provide support. Give it your all, and leave the rest to me!'

"Oh?" Carou quirked a brow in amusement. "Not running?"

The following moment, its lips curled into a wide grin. "Fine by me!"

Boom!

With a deafening sound, the ground beneath Luca exploded as he shot forward. In the blink of an eye, he had appeared before the monster, his mana-coated hand coming down in a vicious chop to the neck.

Carou could see the attack coming from a kilometer away. It was impressed by the human's speed. But alas, it was nothing compared to its own.

Just as Luca's attack was about to connect, Carou flickered out of sight.

The monster reappeared behind the human and drove a palm strike straight toward the spine. But very soon, its smile froze when, from the corner of its eye, it sensed a bright projectile hurling at its head.

[Magic Missile]

The orb of pure mana was only inches away from hitting the mark.

Carou clicked its tongue in annoyance and withdrew the strike that would have shattered Luca's spine. It flickered away once more, putting distance between them.

A look of irritation crossed the caprine monster's face as it turned toward the spot where it thought the spell had come from.

Its eyes narrowed when it found no one there.

In fact, Adam was nowhere to be seen.

Illusion?

Carou didn't have enough time to ponder Adam's location.

Luca was already upon him.

The Lone Wolf exploded into a flurry of punches, claw strikes, chops, and kicks. Each strike seemingly carried the weight of mountains. And his speed was also nothing to scoff at.

Carou feared that if even one of those strikes landed, it would be in a world of pain.

It was, after all, a creature that specialized in speed. Defence had never been its forte. It was certain that it would be able to take care of these two puny humans with its speed alone.

A Mana Core Magus and a Cavalier Paladin should have been easy prey for it. It never thought that things would become so problematic.

The problem wasn't dodging Luca's attacks. No, those were easy. The real problem was Adam's spells. Every time Carou tried to counterattack, a [Magic Missile] would suddenly appear out of nowhere, forcing it to abandon the attack.

It believed that Adam was concealing each [Magic Missile] within a cocoon of illusion magic, revealing its presence only an instant before it struck.

So annoying!

It was forced to divide its attention, one part focused on Luca, and the other constantly searching for Adam.

After being forced onto the defensive for several minutes, where all it could do was block and evade Luca's relentless attacks, Carou finally caught sight of Adam carefully hidden among the trees some twenty meters away.

There you are!

In an instant, it burst away from the Lone Wolf. Its speed was so overwhelming that Luca had no hope of catching up.

Carou understood that if it wanted to win this battle, it had to eliminate Adam first.

Within moments, it had shaken off Luca's pursuit and reached the tree where Adam was hiding. It could see the look of surprise and terror on the human's face, and it couldn't help but flash a cruel grin.

Carou's hands shot forward in a vicious attempt to crush his skull.

"Die!" it roared.

The monster's hands turned into a blur, and they struck true.

But instead of blood and shattered bone, they passed through the fog of illusion and slammed into the tree.

Boom!

Wood splintered in every direction as Carou's eyes slowly widened. In the next heartbeat, a brilliant magic circle flared across the trunk.

[Wood Spikes]

Half a dozen wooden spikes burst from the trunk!

Hot blood sprayed in the air.

But Carou was already gone.
