Chapter 1955 Sun Temple Incident

Adventurers' City.

Genevieve's hands blurred as she wove seals at a frightening speed. Her palms met and then separated a few inches, allowing a small spherical ball of mana to form in between them.

At first glance, the sphere of mana appeared plain and simple. But if one observed closer, they'd see that it was filled with complex patterns and mysterious symbols.

[Enthrall]

The tiny sphere of mana shot out from her palms and accurately burrowed into the head of a black wolf.

Michael had incapacitated the beast just moments ago. However, he had been asked not to deal too much damage to it. The process had been difficult, but he was able to defeat the Rank 1 monster without injuring it too much.

However, in the process, he had been heavily wounded instead.

Blood flowed from the claw strikes on his forearms as he gasped for air. When he saw the tiny light orb shoot inside the wolf's head, he finally heaved a sigh of relief.

"This better be worth it, Genevieve!" he muttered, exasperated.

Genevieve remained silent, her attention fixed on the wolf. Her brows furrowed grimly as she observed the beast's ferocious expression change drastically.

Shock. Anger. Fear. Unwillingness.

Those emotions swept through the beast in that order. It thrashed wildly on the ground, trying to overpower the magic that was taking over its mind.

Michael stood before Genevieve, sword ready in hand and ready to act at a moment's notice.

Finally, after what seemed like forever, the expression on the wolf's face changed one last time.

Recognition.

Genevieve wiped the sweat from her forehead and finally breathed a sigh of relief. "It's done," she murmured.

Enslaving the wolf had been slightly more difficult than she had expected. It was the first time she was attempting such a feat, after all. When her consciousness brushed against the wolf's feral, bestial mind, she was caught off guard for a brief moment.

After the initial surprise, however, everything proceeded smoothly.

Its instincts were fierce, but the thoughts were simple.

Patiently, she eroded the beast's resistance, smothering its instincts beneath the weight of her own will. Bit by bit, its defiance faded until, at last, the wolf lowered its mental guard.

From that moment onward, its mind no longer belonged to itself.

It belonged to her.

She walked past Michael, slowly and calmly approaching the wolf.

"Careful." Michael couldn't help but warn.

But his fears were unwarranted.

The wolf that had only recently been fighting him with such vicious ferocity had suddenly turned into a docile dog in front of Genevieve.

The corner of Michael's lips twitched, and he slowly straightened. He couldn't believe that the wild beast was wagging its tail.

Actually wagging its tail!

Genevieve cautiously reached out with her hand. The wolf closed its eyes in response and gently lowered its head. When her palm brushed against its furry head, its tail started wagging even more intensely.

"Good boy," Genevieve whispered.

Michael watched the scene unfold, speechless. He let out an exasperated sigh.

"You Magi are so versatile," he murmured. "I'm totally not envious."

He turned around and scanned the buildings on both sides of the alley. He and Genevieve had momentarily separated from the rest of the group. The team thought that they were searching for clues about the sun temple incident.

But in reality, Genevieve was trying out her new magic. She did not want to disclose it to the rest of the group for obvious reasons. After the many life-and-death battles she had fought alongside Michael, she naturally trusted him. And so, only he had accompanied her.

"We should leave, Genevieve." He turned back toward her.

"It's already been more than five minutes. The others might start suspecting."

Genevieve rubbed the wolf's head with an intrigued smile. She stood back up and said gently, "Go. Reunite with your pack."

The wolf stepped closer, fondly rubbing its head against her leg. It looked at her one last time before running out of the alley. It made sure to cast a contemptuous glance at Michael before leaving, though.

"Are you serious!" Michael's mouth was agape. "What was that about?"

"It may or may not hold a grudge against you for hurting it," Genvivee said, letting out a soft chuckle.

Michael didn't know how to react. He shook his head and said, "Let's go."

They scaled the adjacent building — Michael relying on his physical prowess, and Genevieve using magic.

As they headed toward the rest of the team, Michael glanced at her and couldn't help but ask, "So how does it work?"

Genevieve, feeling accomplished from her successful attempt, was in a slightly better mood.

"How does what work?"

"Enslaving the beast, I mean," Michael said as he gracefully jumped from one rooftop to the other.

Genevieve, trailing slightly behind him, said softly, "Once I leave a mark on the beast, it stays until either the beast dies or I do."

"And will it obey your every word?"

"Most orders, yes." Genevieve nodded. "If I ordered it to commit suicide, it would obviously resist with all its might. But a bestial mind is far easier to dominate than that of a more intelligent creature."

Michael's felt a chill crawl down his spine. "Just what are you trying to do?"

Genevieve's expression grew solemn. She remained silent for a long time before softly replying:

"Raise an army."

Michael looked at her deeply. He couldn't help but ask, "Do you think you could enslave hundreds of beasts?"

"I wouldn't have to [Enthrall] hundreds." Genevieve shook her head. "Just the handful of the alphas."

She paused before continuing, "Control the leaders, and the packs will follow. If the alpha obeys me, so will the rest."

Michael fell silent.

Only then did he understand why the School of Enchantment was feared.

A single Enchantress did not need to command an entire army.

She only needed to command those who already did.

After cautiously traveling for several more minutes, taking detours and making sure they weren't being followed, the pair finally arrived at one of the designated safehouses nearby.

They knocked on the door using a rhythm that only those inside would recognize. It was an additional layer of security, specifically designed to guard against the more intelligent and crafty ghouls.

When they entered the hideout, they found that the rest of the team was already gathered. In addition, a messenger from the City Hall was waiting.

"New orders?" Michael asked, glancing first at the messenger, then at Leah.

"Yes." Leah nodded. "We are to return immediately."

"What about our mission?" Genevieve couldn't help but ask.

She still hadn't found any clue regarding Adam's whereabouts, and she didn't want to leave until she had something concrete.

"It's over," Leah replied.

"The council has already discovered the reason behind the sun temple incident."
