Chapter 2002 Secret Passage

Chapter 2002 Secret Passage

As the sounds of their fierce battle rolled through the entire castle, Adam nonchalantly made his way through the ancient corridors.

Valerian perched upon his shoulder, his topaz eyes darting around with wonder and curiosity.

Unlike the chaotic battle raging behind them, the corridors Adam walked through were eerily silent. The only sounds were the distant booms and crashes echoing from the throne room, accompanied by the occasional tremor that caused dust to fall through the ceiling.

Adam paid them no mind. His hands remained tucked inside his pockets as he leisurely strolled through the ancient castle.

Meanwhile, Valerian craned his little head from side to side, curiously observing everything around him. His eyes widened whenever another thunderous impact echoed through the castle.

The young dragon had clearly realized that the battle between Luca and the Last Knight was a fierce one.

Adam glanced at him from the corner of his eye and smirked. "Worried about Luca?"

Valerian let out a soft myu.

Adam chuckled. "Don't worry. He's strong. And when he emerges victorious from this battle, he'll become even stronger."

Behind them, another thunderous sound echoed. The entire castle shook once again. Valerian turned around, concern visible in his topaz eyes. Then he nodded lightly.

"If you say so, Brother."

Adam quirked a brow and couldn't help but ask, "What's gotten into you? Luca won't die. So why're you acting all gloomy?"

Valerian lowered his head, his ears drooping. Then he said, in a soft voice, "I miss Genevieve."

Adam remained silent.

The little fellow turned to him and asked, "Why aren't we going to save her, brother?"

Adam replied after a long moment of deliberation, "It would be foolish to do so without knowing the true strength of our enemy."

Deep down, he was genuinely worried about Genevieve. Those strange feelings in his heart kept telling him to go and save her, to abandon all caution and rush to her side. But his rational mind told him otherwise.

They knew too little about the enemy. Charging in blindly without knowing their true strength would be no different from throwing their lives away. Adam clenched his fists slightly.

"No matter how much I want to save her, I cannot afford to act recklessly," Adam said with a wry smile.

"…I see." Valerian nodded sadly.

A flash of grey light illuminated the dim corridor, and he retreated back into Adam's spirit sea. The corner of Adam's lips curled further upward, but his eyes did not seem happy at all.

He focused on his current task to gather as much information as possible about the history of this land, the d'Aubigny royal family, Jacob de Vile, and anything else that might even remotely help him.

Adam was someone who believed that knowledge was power. Strength alone was not enough to claim victory. Wisdom was just as important.

And so, he began scouring the castle, searching from one chamber to another in search of clues.

He searched through the old study rooms, dusty libraries, forgotten storage chambers, and abandoned halls. He examined ancient records, old maps, family portraits, and every document he could find.

He carefully read through anything that seemed even remotely relevant, committing whatever information he could find to memory. Hours passed as Adam continued his search. He did not know what he was looking for. But he did know one thing…

Somewhere within this ancient castle, there had to be something that could help him understand the truth behind this land.

As the sound of battle continued to thrum through the castle, Adam had already finished searching all but the uppermost level of the castle.

Unfortunately, most of what he had found could not stand the test of time. The records had been destroyed, leaving behind only scraps of information.

The little information he did find was about the nobility of the Valouis Kingdom, the people of Valcouronne, taxes, and other mundane matters. He took whatever information he could find and stored it away inside his mind.

Another thing, much to his dismay, was that he did not find any treasure at all. Not a single damn coin.

Adam couldn't help but curse. "Dragonshit!"

After searching an entire castle, he had expected to find at least something valuable. Instead, all he had found were old records, dusty documents, and a mountain of useless information.

Still, he could not complain. Information was valuable in its own way.

Adam raised his head and looked toward the uppermost level of the castle. Only one place remained, and he hoped that, unlike the rest of the castle, it would contain something.

Upon reaching the uppermost level, Adam could instantly see the difference in both the architecture and the space. This floor was undoubtedly reserved for the royal family's residence.

Unlike the lower levels, there were only a handful of rooms here. Adam quickly searched through them one by one, but found nothing of importance.

Eventually, he arrived before the king and queen's royal bedchamber.

"Here goes nothing," he murmured and pushed through the doors.

The royal bedchamber was grand, even after being ravaged by the passage of time. The furniture, though clearly crafted from expensive wood, had clearly decayed with age. Cracks ran across polished surfaces, while layers of dust covered nearly everything within the room. A massive broken bed stood at the center of the chamber, its curtains hanging in tatters.

Adam slowly walked toward the large windows. From there, he could see the entirety of the city sprawled below. For a moment, he silently gazed at the ancient city bathed in the crimson glow.

Then, he turned around and continued his search. Once again, he found nothing. At this point, he couldn't help but begin to frown. He had found nothing throughout the entire castle. This was the last place where he had truly believed he would find at least some information.

He remained rooted on the spot for a long time.

"Fuck me," he cursed quietly.

Just as he was about to leave, his Sphere of Resonance caught something.

A faint draft of air.

It was so weak that it would have been easy to overlook. Adam's gaze shifted toward the large wooden wardrobe. A smile appeared on his face.

He easily pushed the wardrobe to the side, revealing an unassuming wall behind it. Adam carefully studied it for another minute before pressing several specific points.

Rumble!

The wall split open, revealing a dark secret passage beyond it.
