Chapter 2015 Better Off Dead

Chapter 2015 Better Off Dead

Gregor knew that before his fellow councilors made a hasty decision against Adam and Luca, he had to quickly inform them about something very crucial.

"He slew the High Priest!" Gregor pointed at Adam. Then he pointed at Luca and continued, "And his little brother just killed the Last Knight!"

The reactions of the three councilors were subtle, but Adam noticed them immediately.

The dwarf's expression stiffened. The hostility in his eyes did not disappear, but it was now accompanied by caution. The old human's gaze flickered toward Adam before shifting to the unconscious Luca hanging over his shoulder. As for the elf, the intrigue in her eyes returned.

The two monsters Gregor had mentioned were not insignificant creatures.

The High Priest had ruled over the Sun Temple for years, while the Last Knight had been one of the greatest threats within the city. Neither had been easy to deal with.

And yet, according to Gregor, the two men before them had killed both.

The implication was obvious. If they had been considering violently questioning Adam about how he knew about the vampires, those thoughts quickly disappeared. At the very least, they could no longer afford to act recklessly.

Umlo slowly uncrossed his arms. Aramen leaned back in his chair, his dark gaze never leaving Adam. Kesha studied him with curiosity, but there was also considerably more caution.

Their perception of Adam had changed.

Moments ago, he had merely been an outsider who somehow knew one of City Hall's most dangerous secrets. Now, however, he was an outsider who was capable of killing a creature like the Antlered High Priest. And his unconscious companion had somehow defeated the Last Knight.

The atmosphere inside the chamber became even heavier. No one knew how powerful Adam truly was. And that uncertainty brought his threat level up a notch.

"Tell me, boy." Aramen's cold words echoed in the chamber. "How did you come to know about our… arrangement with the vampires?"

He made a covert hand sign under the table, signaling the dwarf. Umlo shifted his gaze for the briefest of moments, understanding Aramen's meaning.

Adam observed everything with a detached look on his face.

If he were being honest with himself, he couldn't stand these councilors. He wouldn't even have bothered to entertain them if he hadn't had any need of them.

"Tell me, old man." Adam's face showed a look of pure disgust. "How did you come to sell out your own kind to our enemies?"

Gregor's expression paled. Aramen was the strongest of them, and no one dared to speak so disrespectfully to him. Not even the other councilors. Kesha also grew solemn. The flicker of amusement in her eyes instantly vanished. Only Umlo's expression was a little strange. The dwarf could hardly contain the excitement in his eyes.

Aramen, the target of Adam's venomous words, did not show any outward reaction. If anything, he seemed a little disappointed.

"Young men like you," he began with a soft sigh. "You truly do not know the immensity of the world you live in."

The old human's eyes narrowed, and he continued, "Did you think killing the werewolf and the knight would make us wary of you? Did you think we didn't kill those monsters all this time because we were unable to? You truly are an ignorant fool."

Even before the last of his words escaped his lips, his body had turned into a shadowy blur, and he had vanished. The same was true for Umlo.

In less than the blink of an eye, the two powerful Templars had crossed the chamber. Adam barely had time to register their movements.

Umlo appeared before him first. The dwarf moved with terrifying speed despite his stocky frame. His thick arm swept forward, effortlessly separating Luca from Adam's shoulder before the unconscious Paladin could become an obstacle.

Then, with a single fluid motion, Umlo forced Luca to the ground and pinned him there.

Almost simultaneously, Aramen appeared before Adam. His hand shot forward, effectively making any of Adam's resistance useless. Before the latter could even react, fingers like iron clamps closed around his throat.

The next moment, Adam felt the ground vanish beneath his feet and—

Bang!

Aramen viciously slammed him into the floor as the entire chamber seemed to tremble.

Pain exploded across Adam's back as the breath was knocked from his lungs. His vision blurred for a moment, and before he could even gather himself, Aramen had already tightened his grip around his neck.

"I will ask you one last time, boy." The old Paladin spoke with narrowed eyes. "How did you find out?"

Adam instinctively tried to move. But nothing happened. The difference in strength was simply too great. Aramen's grip was like a steel vice. Adam clawed at the man's wrist, but he could not even force his fingers to loosen.

Aramen was strong. He had not become a councilor simply because of his authority. He was a monster in his own right.

And right now, with Luca unconscious and himself pinned helplessly beneath Aramen, Adam could do nothing but stare upward as the old man's cold eyes looked down at him.

Adam did not answer.

Aramen sighed. He reached out for the dagger at his waist. As the blade twirled between his fingers, he said in an indifferent voice, "If you will not answer, then I have no use for disobedient soldiers like you."

His gaze remained fixed on Adam. There was no hesitation in his eyes. Aramen was a ruthless man, and he had already made his judgment.

Adam's expression alone told him everything he needed to know. The young Magus was not someone who would obediently follow orders. He was arrogant, defiant, and clearly unwilling to submit to the authority of City Hall.

If that was the case, then Aramen had no use for him.

Such people were better off dead, he thought as the dagger shot forward.

It tore through the air with killing intent, its sharp blade aimed directly at Adam's neck.

Right at that moment, a voice echoed from behind.

"Careful."

The dagger froze mere inches away from Adam's neck.

Aramen frowned.

He slowly turned toward the source of the voice, and his eyes narrowed.

Gregor and Kesha also turned, their expressions ones of sheer disbelief.

Adam stood calmly behind Aramen's high-backed chair, with Luca still slung over his shoulder as though nothing had happened.

"Bit careless, don't you think?" he asked.

Stunned silence descended in the chamber.

For a brief moment, no one moved. They were too shocked to even speak.

Then, as though struck by the same realization, Gregor, Kesha, and Aramen simultaneously snapped their heads toward the person pinned to the ground.

It was Umlo.
