Chapter 2177: Like A Revenant
Chapter 2177: Like A Revenant
Genevieve watched in horror, frozen in place as the butchery unfolded before her.
The waiter continued sawing at Adam’s neck, his face twisted into a malevolent grin. Every now and then, he glanced at Genevieve, seemingly savoring the despair in her horrified eyes.
He was enjoying this. He was enjoying every second of it.
Genevieve’s eyes gradually turned bloodshot. Her body trembled in rage.
Adam was dying.
The man she loved was dying right before her eyes, and she could do nothing but watch.
No.
NO.
Something snapped inside of her.
With a sudden burst of strength, Genevieve let out a roar like a revenant rising from its grave. She hurled herself toward the bastard who dared to kill Adam, her face twisted with fury and grief.
She would kill him! She would tear him apart with both hands!
Genevieve had barely taken a few steps when a man tackled her from the side.
THUD!
She slammed into the ground. A sharp crack echoed through her chest as several ribs broke, and the impact knocked the wind out of her.
Before she could recover, the man mounted her and clamped his hands around her neck.
Genevieve’s eyes widened. She couldn’t breathe.
The bald man squeezed harder, his fingers digging into her throat. Her face turned pale, then purple, as she desperately struggled to draw air into her lungs.
Tears streamed down her cheeks. Her eyes bulged, threatening to burst from their sockets.
Adam...
She couldn’t die here.
Not like this!
Her hands clawed at the ground, desperately searching for something. Anything.
Her fingers brushed against a sharp object. A piece of broken glass. She grabbed it without hesitation. The jagged edge sliced into her palm, and blood immediately seeped between her fingers.
But she did not stop. With hatred and fury in her eyes, Genevieve thrust the shard upward.
Splat!
The glass plunged straight into the bald man’s eye.
He let out a bloodcurdling scream and immediately released her neck, clutching his face as blood poured through the gap in his fingers.
Genevieve coughed violently as she desperately sucked air into her lungs. Her throat burned, and every breath sent pain shooting through her broken ribs.
But she didn’t have time to recover. Adam was still there.
And that bastard was still trying to kill him.
She looked around for Adam, even as she struggled to breathe. The world was blurry. Her head throbbed. Her ribs screamed with every breath. Blood trickled from the side of her face. She could barely feel her hands and feet.
But all she could think about was Adam.
Where are you?
She blinked several times, desperately trying to clear her vision.
Then she saw him.
He was lying a short distance away. The Paladin in the waiter’s clothes was still trying to saw through his neck with his dagger. Apparently, he was having trouble.
"Leave him," Genevieve whispered.
Her voice was hoarse, barely audible even to herself.
She crawled toward Adam, dragging her battered body across the blood-soaked floor. Every movement sent waves of agony through her chest, but she gritted her teeth and continued.
Just a little further. She only needed to reach him.
And then, from the corner of her eye, she saw it. A shadow approaching. Before she could react, a brutal kick struck the side of her head.
Thud!
Her vision went white. Pain exploded through her skull. Something cracked. Warm blood oozed down her face, soaking her hair.
For a moment, her body went limp. She nearly collapsed onto the ground.
But her fingers twitched. She held on.
Adam.
She had to reach Adam.
With a trembling arm, Genevieve pushed herself forward again. Her vision swam, and the world seemed to spin around her. She could barely tell where she was crawling. Still, she continued.
He was right there. Her love. Her everything. She couldn’t leave him. She promised to be together with him till the end. Till the end.
Suddenly, a weight pressed down on her back. Then another. Before she could understand what was happening, several men surrounded her.
Someone grabbed her hair and yanked her head backward.
A sharp cry escaped her throat as her scalp burned with pain. Another pair of hands gripped her clothes and began tearing at them.
She struggled weakly, trying to twist away, but her broken ribs made even the slightest movement unbearable.
Then someone grabbed her ankle.
Stab!
A knife plunged into the underside of her foot.
Genevieve screamed. The pain was blinding. Her entire leg jerked involuntarily, and she clawed at the floor, desperately trying to pull herself free.
Another blade drove into the side of her stomach. She gasped in horror and pain. For one terrible moment, she couldn’t even scream. She could only stare in disbelief as pain spread through her abdomen.
Then came another blow. Another dagger. Another punch.
A boot slammed into her breast, crushing the air from her lungs. Before she could recover, the boot struck again. Someone punched her face. Her nose caved in. Broken and bloody.
She curled instinctively, trying to protect herself, but there was nowhere to hide. Every part of her body seemed to hurt. Her head throbbed. Her chest felt as though it had been caved in.
She couldn’t breathe properly. She couldn’t fight back. She couldn’t even crawl anymore.
No...
Please...
The men above her were laughing. Their voices seemed distant, as though she was sinking underwater. She could hear them, but she couldn’t make sense of their words.
Her body was growing cold.
Is this it?
Is this... where I die?
That realization struck her with so much fear that it was unlike anything she had ever experienced.
She didn’t want to die. Not like this. Not surrounded by strangers who treated her life as nothing.
She was afraid. So afraid that her body trembled despite her inability to move.
But even now, even as the darkness crept into the edges of her vision, her thoughts returned to the same person.
Adam.
She turned her head with immense difficulty.
There you are...
Still lying on the ground. Still being butchered by that Paladin.
She couldn’t see his face clearly anymore. Everything was blurred by tears and blood, but she could make out his motionless body.
My love...
She stretched out her hand toward him. It was a pathetic gesture. Her arm barely moved, and her fingers shook uncontrollably. She knew she would never reach him at this distance.
Still, she reached.
"...My love..."
Her voice was so faint that she could barely hear it.
Another kick struck her, and her body convulsed. A fresh wave of pain washed over her, stealing what little strength she had left.
Yet her eyes remained fixed on Adam.
She wanted him to be the last person she saw before she died.
Tears and blood blurred her vision until his figure became nothing more than a dark shape in the distance.
She wanted to call his name. She wanted to tell him she loved him. That she would love him even after death. She wanted to hold his hand one last time.
The men around her were about to deliver the final blow.
Just then, Genevieve’s shadow embraced her, and she vanished.
In her place were a boy and a girl who looked around in shock and horror.
Vesper could no longer hold back.
He could not sit back and watch Genevieve die.
And so, in order to save her life...
He sacrificed Channing’s grandchildren.
