Chapter 52 - GDD Chapter 52
Chapter 52 - GDD Chapter 52
Duke Wilson has always done things neatly. Since he had agreed to help Ford, naturally he would not break his word. The very next day, he went to see the Chief Judge of the County court, who had watched him grow up from a young age. Anyway, he still has to give Duke Wilson a little face in this matter. Therefore, the matter was settled smoothly and the Chief Judge quickly gave the green light to the Delanlier parish, allowing the bank to compensate the church for the money lost by the church.
This solution caught Evan by surprise. The Duke’s influence was too great in this era and it was the first time Evan really felt this.
Evan did not participate in the specific handover of this matter. It was carried out between Sheriff Chandler and Ford from beginning to end. It was not until this matter was resolved that Ford came to Cornwall Manor again.
Duke Wilson’s impatience towards Ford this time was beyond words and he looked at Ford with an indifferent expression as if he hadn’t noticed his presence.
“Lord Duke, please accept my most sincere thanks. The quick solution of this matter this time is all thanks to your help.” Ford said gently as if he didn’t notice Duke Wilson’s expression.
The expression on Duke Wilson’s face remained unchanged, and he said coldly, “You’re welcome. This is also because of Reverend Bruce, who is my best friend. This trivial matter is nothing to worry about.”
Ford glanced at Evan, who was sitting next to him, with complicated eyes, “In any case, the bishop will be very grateful for the help you rendered to the church this time.” In order to save his face, Ford could only take the disregard passively.
Duke Wilson had no intention of stomping the church’s face on the ground and nodded casually without saying much.
But Ford became more enthusiastic and continued, “By the way, I don’t know if you know. Mrs Johnson’s matter has already been raised by Sheriff Chandler.”
Evan’s expression moved and Duke Wilson’s face also had a hint of interest, “Oh?” He glanced at Ferd, “I haven’t heard of this.”
With Duke Wilson’s prestige in the town, if Ford can know something he doesn’t know, it means that this thing is really rare.
“Sheriff Chandler just found a witness to prove that on the day of Mr Johnson’s death, Mrs Johnson was seen sneaking out of the meeting place of the Women’s Association and returning to her home.” Ford had an intriguing expression on his face.
Duke Wilson frowned when he heard this and he glanced at Evan. As far as he knew, Evan also took this matter very seriously.
But Evan fell into deep thought at this time. The memory of the first day he met Mrs Johnson after Mr Johnson’s death suddenly came to his mind. She was arrogant and cold, not like a new widow at all. But when he met her for the second time, she turned into a weak widow. Such a woman can indeed commit murder.
“Then what is Sheriff Chandler going to do?” Duke Wilson asked himself when he saw that Evan was obviously stunned.
Ford also noticed Evan’s unusual reaction and hooked his lips and said, “I heard that the lady has been summoned to the police station by the sheriff. As for how he’ll deal with it, I don’t know yet.”
Duke Wilson frowned with disgust when he heard this. This matter is too complicated and confusing, and two people have been arrested one after another. He really doesn’t know if it is true this time.
Ford left immediately after he said this. His main purpose of coming to Cornwall Manor this time was to express his gratitude to the Duke. This result of this matter has been passed on to the bishop through the Chief Judge. Because of his poor handling of the issue, he alarmed the duke and was thus reprimanded by the bishop. Although Ford completed the task this time, he was not in a very good mood.
After Ford left Cornwall Manor, he returned to his hut. He has been living in a hut behind the church for the past few days. This was originally the residence of the night watchman, but this time because of his arrival, the night watchman was driven out and crowded with the deacon while he took up residence in the solitary hut.
Ford has enjoyed the riches and honors of the world since he was a child. For him, this hut is extremely frugal but his present condition is totally different from the past. The current Ford could only swallow his anger, and he had to greet everyone with a smile.
Ford felt very aggrieved by this situation, but thinking of his older brother’s previous instructions, he could only endure it as he couldn’t offend the noble count(??) at this time. After all, his father had passed away and all his brother could do for him now could only get him here. More importantly, he came to this ghost place this time, not only because of survival, but also because of that person…
As he thought of this, Ford grit his teeth. His expression was distorted, that person…that shameless villain who ruined his life!
Ford wanted Evan to be ruined, he wanted him to fall apart, and he wanted to give him a taste of what it felt like to be trapped in hell.
Ford’s fists were clenched tightly and there was a vicious light in his eyes. That day is not far away, and the results of his arrangements for the past few days will soon be realized.
Ford couldn’t hold his laughter. He looked at the complete property transfer document in his hand and his mood finally improved a lot. His mission has been completed but Evan’s disaster has just arrived.
At this moment, Mrs Sanders’ voice suddenly came from outside the door, “Mr Ford, Dr. Hester and Miss Alia are here.”
Ford frowned slightly, he was a little uneasy in his heart. As far as he knew, Dr. Hester and Miss Alia had always been guests of the Duke’s mansion but since Evan entered Duke Wilson’s mansion, the relationship between them has become really alienated.
“Dr. Hester is here?” Ford opened the door, looked at the middle-aged woman who was calm and a little indifferent, and asked, “Are they looking for me?”
“Of course.” Mrs Sanders’ words were short and icy with a hint of sarcasm, as if mocking Ford’s meaningless question.
Ford grit his teeth in his heart but had a gentle look on his face and said warmly, “Thank you for letting me know.”
Because of the relationship between these two people and Duke Wilson, he has been in contact with Dr. Hester ever since he found out about the ambiguous relationship between Evan and Duke Wilson, hoping to find something useful to use from here.
Dr. Hester is a typical country gentleman. He is honest and steady, and likes reasoning about crime investigation. According to Ford’s observation, although Dr. Hester has a big mouth, he does not reveal any important information, saying nothing about Duke Wilson.
This annoyed Ford at first, because he suddenly found out that he had been tricked by a douchebag. But only after getting in touch with the doctor’s daughter, did Ford finally realize that between the father and daughter, the stubborn Miss Alia was his best chance to get a breakthrough.
Ford came to the front hall of the church. Alia and Dr. Hester were praying with their fingers crossed in front of the statue of Jesus. Ford stood by patiently and waited with a gentle expression.
After a long time, Dr. Hester was the first to open his eyes as he crossed his chest, said ‘Amen’, and finally ended his prayer.
“Mr Ford!” When he saw Ford standing by the side, he spoke with a surprised voice.
Ford smiled slightly, stretched out his hand and said quietly, “Please, don’t let us interfere with Miss Arya’s prayers.”
Alia’s closed eyelashes trembled slightly and she opened her eyes. “You are really a gentleman.” Alia looked at Ford with admiration.
Ford pursed his lips and smiled, “You flatter me. You are a devout believer. This is a good thing for the whole church.”
Embarrassed, Alia smiled. Speaking of which, she is not a very pious person, but since the time when she could no longer enter and leave the Duke’s mansion at will and when she wants, this has become the only place that can make her feel calm.
“Mr Ford, have you finished your work this time?” Dr. Hester looked at him tentatively.
Ford’s expression turned slightly as he nodded, “By God’s grace, it’s done.”
Dr. Hester’s eyes gleamed brightly, “Ah! It’s really done! Do you know anything from Sheriff Chandler this time? What theories are there for this case?”
Ford laughed when he heard this. Since this incident happened at the meeting, Dr. Hester has been making inferences, but all his reasoning seem to be very out of date. So far, none of his guesses have been right but he is very enthusiastic about this matter, so Ford pays more attention to this matter.
“My dear doctor, you are a gentleman. I can’t tell you about this, I hope you can understand.”
Although Ford said this, Dr. Hester’s eyes were already bright and gleaming. Ford’s words couldn’t be more obvious, Mrs Johnson was definitely involved.
“Oh…oh, of course.” Dr. Hester nodded calmly, “This matter is really terrible, I hope it can be resolved as soon as possible.”
Dr. Hester tried desperately to hide his excitement but he still failed in the end. His clenched fists and excited eyes showed no regret at all unlike his tone.
Ford acted like he didn’t see the change in Dr. Hester’s expression, he still nodded solemnly, “Yes, I hope so too and Duke Wilson also thinks so.”
When he said the second half of the sentence, the corners of his eyes were always aimed at Alia, watching her face turn pale and stiff. A smile appeared on the corner of Ford’s mouth.
“Duke…Lord Duke?” Alia asked stumblingly, “Have you seen Lord Duke?”
Ford smiled gently, “Yes, in order to thank Lord Duke for his generous help this time, I went to the Duke’s mansion.”
A look of excitement flashed in Alia’s eyes, and she immediately asked, “Is the Duke alright?”
Ford looked at Alia with surprise, “The Duke is naturally very good, but Reverend Bruce still looks a little pale.”
“Reverend Bruce…” Alia bit her lip, “He… does he still live in the Duke’s Manor?”
Dr. Hester suddenly interjected, “The Reverend is seriously injured and has not recovered yet. Of course he lives in the Duke’s mansion.”
Different from usual, Dr. Hester looked at Alia with an almost stern expression.
