Chapter 454: The Iron-Cloud Counter-Offensive

Chapter 454: The Iron-Cloud Counter-Offensive

Rain poured from the gray heavens in thick, slanted sheets, turning the borderlands of the Celestial Dragon Empire into a churning sea of brown mud.

Three full weeks had passed since the slaughter at Shattered Pass.

Along the winding mountain road leading northeast toward the iron-rich ridges of Azure Fall City, thousands of soldiers trudged through ankle-deep slush. Heavy supply wagons creaked and groaned as iron-shod wheels sank into the mire. Teamsters in soaked hemp cloaks cracked their whips over the backs of six-legged armored scale-beasts, shouting hoarse curses as the beasts snorted white steam into the damp air.

Near the center of the marching column, six towering scale-beasts pulled a gilded war carriage draped in imperial yellow banners.

Inside that warm, dry carriage sat First Prince Huang Wei.

First Prince Huang Wei leaned back against silk cushions stuffed with swan down, holding a golden goblet of warmed plum wine in one hand and a polished jade baton in the other. A wide, self-satisfied grin stretched across his face. Over the past twenty-one days, that grin had rarely left his cheeks.

Across from him knelt Quartermaster General Luo Feng and General Sun Ba of the Fierce Tiger Unit, both men keeping their heads bowed low while rainwater dripped from the hems of their armored cloaks onto the lacquered floor.

“Look at this terrain map again, General Sun,” First Prince Huang Wei said, tapping the unrolled beast-skin parchment with his jade baton. “Three weeks ago, everyone in the eastern provinces trembled at the mere mention of General Tokugawa Ieyasu. They called him the Iron Demon of the Rising Sun Empire. Yet the moment this prince took personal command at Shattered Pass, his hundred-thousand-man army crumbled like dry clay.”

General Sun Ba, a scarred Martial King whose beard bristled like iron wire, cleared his throat and bowed lower. “Your Royal Highness possesses strategic foresight blessed by the Heavens themselves. When the river dams broke and the array inverted, the samurai of the Rising Sun Empire did not even know which way to run. The soldiers of the Fierce Tiger Unit still sing songs of Your Royal Highness standing atop the earthworks and pointing your sword to summon the flood.”

First Prince Huang Wei laughed aloud, his chest puffing out beneath his dragon-embroidered breastplate. “Songs, you say? Well, common soldiers have simple minds, so it is natural they view my tactical calculations as divine miracles. To tell you the truth, General Sun, when I looked at the fog over Shattered Pass that morning, I saw the flaw in General Tokugawa’s formation with a single glance. It came to me like a bolt of lightning.”

Beside the brass brazier, Quartermaster General Luo Feng kept his eyes glued to the carpet so First Prince Huang Wei would not see the twitch at the corner of his mouth. Every officer in the camp knew that Imperial Consort Xian Zhao Mengxue and Noble Consort Cui Yulan had handed down the runic inversion diagrams, and that Noble Consort Cui Yulan had fought in the mud to break the enemy spearhead while First Prince Huang Wei hid behind four rows of royal shields. Yet not a single soul with a working brain wanted to lose his head by reminding the prince of those small details.

“Your Royal Highness is unmatched in the art of war,” Quartermaster General Luo Feng praised smoothly. “Once we march through the Crow-Tooth Ridges and retake Azure Fall City along with the surrounding iron-vein mountain passes, Your Royal Highness’s prestige will shake the entire continent.”

First Prince Huang Wei’s eyes gleamed with greed as he took a long sip of warm wine. “Azure Fall City and its seven iron-rich passes are the key to everything. For three weeks, I have ordered the Shadow-Wing Hawks and border checkpoints to block every single courier heading west toward the Imperial Capital. My father, Emperor Huang Long, still believes the eastern border is enjoying a quiet autumn harvest.”

“The blockade is holding firm, Your Royal Highness,” Quartermaster General Luo Feng reported. “Not a single unauthorized Transmission Jade Slip has crossed the Jade-Belt River. The mud and storms have slowed all civilian travel to a crawl, and our Black-Scale Cavalry patrols every mountain trail.”

“Good,” First Prince Huang Wei said, waving his jade baton in the air. “If word had reached the Imperial Capital that General Cui Hao lost Azure Fall City to General Tokugawa, my father would have sent the Imperial Dragon Guards to take over this campaign, and all the credit would have gone to my younger brothers. Instead, we will retake Azure Fall City and the iron mines ourselves. When I send a Transmission Jade Slip to my father next month, it will only announce that General Tokugawa’s invasion has been crushed and that I have expanded our border fortifications by fifty miles!”

“A brilliant plan, Your Royal Highness,” General Sun Ba said, clasping his fists. “Morale across the army has never been higher. The Fierce Tiger Unit, the Black Tortoise Shield Corps, and the Crimson Feather Archers are eager to take the walls of Azure Fall City. Even the mercenary companies marching in the mud ahead of us are fighting over who gets to scale the ramparts first.”

“Let them stay eager,” First Prince Huang Wei chuckled, setting his empty goblet down on a silver tray. “Have the couriers brought any word from General Cui Hao’s relief force?”

Quartermaster General Luo Feng pulled a dim gray Transmission Jade Slip from his belt pouch and held it up with both hands. “This slip arrived via relay rider two hours ago, Your Royal Highness. The heavy rain and the high iron content in the soil around the mountain passes are interfering with long-range spiritual transmissions. A standard Transmission Jade Slip can only carry a message three miles before the signal scatters in the iron-rich peaks, so couriers must ride through the mud from post to post.”

“How tedious,” First Prince Huang Wei sighed, wrinkling his nose. “Well? What does General Cui Hao say?”

“General Cui Hao and the Cui Clan’s Thunder-Spear Relief Force are currently camped twelve miles east of the Dead Crow Basin,” Quartermaster General Luo Feng answered. “They have been skirmishing with the Rising Sun Empire’s Scarlet Crane Unit near the outer iron smelteries. General Cui Hao requests that our main strike forces link up with him before the rains flood the lower gorge.”

“Tell Noble Consort Cui Yulan that her brother only needs to hold his breath for two more days,” First Prince Huang Wei said grandly. “Once my main army arrives, General Tokugawa will probably abandon Azure Fall City without even drawing his blade.”

While First Prince Huang Wei basked in his daydreams of glory, a second, larger carriage rolled along the stone-paved center of the road sixty paces behind him.

Four Peak Martial King guards in heavy dark-gold armor walked at thefour corners of the carriage, while Commander Jin—a Half-Step Martial Emperor whose long golden halberd hummed with condensed Battle Aura—rode a tall scale-steed directly in front of the horses.

Inside the spacious carriage, the atmosphere was far quieter.

Noble Consort Cui Yulan sat near the left window, dressed in her dark violet battle armor. Her silver eyes stared out through the parted silk curtain at the endless curtain of rain beating against the pine trees. In her right hand, she held three cold, unresponsive pieces of green jade—each one a military Transmission Jade Slip addressed to her elder brother, General Cui Hao.

Across the low rosewood tea table sat Imperial Consort Xian Zhao Mengxue in her immaculate crimson robes and Imperial Consort Shu Su Xinyue in deep sapphire silk.

Imperial Consort Shu Su Xinyue picked up a porcelain teapot, pouring steaming fragrant lotus tea into three small cups. The rich, curvaceous lines of her body shifted gracefully under her sapphire robes as she set the pot down and pushed a warm cup toward Noble Consort Cui Yulan.

“Drink some hot tea, Sister Yulan,” Imperial Consort Shu Su Xinyue said gently. “You have been staring at those three dead jade slips since dawn. Even a Peak Martial King cannot make a stone talk by glaring at it.”

Noble Consort Cui Yulan did not touch the cup. Her thumb rubbed hard against the carved dragon seal on the top Transmission Jade Slip. “The last relay from General Cui Hao is thirty hours old. Thirty hours in a warzone is an eternity. We still have not reclaimed Azure Fall City or a single one of the five iron-rich passes surrounding it, yet your son is in the front carriage ordering the musicians to compose victory ballads.”

Imperial Consort Xian Zhao Mengxue lifted her teacup to her full, red lips and blew softly on the steam. Her dark eyes gleamed with quiet amusement. “Wei’er is young, Sister Yulan. A young rooster who wins his first barnyard Pecking match always crows at the sun as if he raised it himself. Let him crow. His confidence keeps the generals of the Fierce Tiger Unit and the Black Tortoise Shield Corps marching through three feet of mud without complaining.”

“Confidence without vigilance is a coffin,” Noble Consort Cui Yulan replied, her voice crisp and low. “General Tokugawa Ieyasu is a Half-Step Martial Emperor who has commanded the eastern seas for forty years. At Shattered Pass, we only destroyed his forward regiments because Sister Mengxue’s ancient diagram reversed his river array. His core legions—the Blood-Moon Samurai Unit, the Iron-Demon Heavy Halberdiers, and the Shadow-Mist Shinobi Corps—withdrew in good order toward the Iron-Cloud Citadel and Azure Fall City.”

“That is true,” Imperial Consort Xian Zhao Mengxue agreed, setting her saucer down. “Our scouts from the Wind-Hound Unit reported yesterday that the outer watchtowers along the Dead Crow Basin were half-burned, as though the Rising Sun garrison was preparing to pull back toward the walls of Azure Fall City.”

Noble Consort Cui Yulan’s silver brows drew together. Her fingers tightened around the jade slips until a faint crackle of violet-gold lightning danced across her knuckles. “It feels too clean. When General Cui Hao lost Azure Fall City two months ago, General Tokugawa spent weeks hauling thousands of tons of black-iron array pillars into these mountains. Why would he abandon the outer passes now without forcing a siege?”

“Perhaps the loss of thirty thousand men at Shattered Pass strained his supply lines across the sea,” Imperial Consort Shu Su Xinyue suggested softly, exchanging a fleeting, knowing glance with Imperial Consort Xian Zhao Mengxue. “Or perhaps he wants to consolidate his forces behind the high walls of Azure Fall City rather than spreading them thin across ten mountain passes.”

Noble Consort Cui Yulan exhaled slowly, forcing the sparks of Nine-Heavens Violet-Gold Suanni lightning back into her Dantian. Even after three weeks of steady marching and periodic treatments, the deep strain in her meridians whenever she agitated her Qi reminded her of how close she had come to ruin.

Her gaze drifted through the rain toward a plain, gray-canopied wagon rolling smoothly alongside the supply train of the Jade Serpent Merchant Organization fifty yards to the right.

Unlike the military wagons that kept getting stuck in the mud, the merchant wagons managed by Guildmaster Lin Ruoli and Ya Su had wide, runic-balanced wooden wheels that glided over the slush with strange ease. Walking beside the lead medicinal wagon was a tall young man in simple gray healer’s robes, holding an oiled bamboo umbrella over his head.

Even through the pouring rain, Alaric Steele looked calm, unhurried, and untouched by the filth of the road.

As if sensing her gaze, Alaric Steele turned his head slightly toward the imperial carriage. Beneath the rim of his bamboo umbrella, he offered a polite, respectful bow and a warm, reassuring smile before turning back to inspect a crate of medicinal herbs with Guildmaster Lin Ruoli.

Noble Consort Cui Yulan felt the tight knot between her shoulder blades loosen by a fraction of an inch. She reached out, picked up the warm porcelain cup Imperial Consort Shu Su Xinyue had poured for her, and took a sip.

“Once we link up with General Cui Hao’s Thunder-Spear Relief Force tomorrow,” Noble Consort Cui Yulan murmured, setting the cup down, “we will establish a fortified siege camp outside the western iron pass before making any move on Azure Fall City.”

Fifty yards away, under the shade of the oiled bamboo umbrella, Alaric Steele walked beside the medicinal wagon while his boots remained clean above the mud, cushioned by a thin, invisible layer of wind mana.

Under his gray healer’s robes, his Concealment Protocol kept his Level 69 Peak Archmage mana core and his Beast Emperor grade Violet-Gold Celestial Spirit-Lion Physique hidden from every Martial King and Half-Step Martial Emperor in the army. To their spiritual senses, he was nothing more than a gentle, scholarly Master Mage physician with a talent for soothing damaged meridians.

Beside him, Guildmaster Lin Ruoli walked under a wide oiled-silk cloak that clung to her voluptuous figure. Her large breasts pressed taut against the emerald silk of her inner gown as she leaned closer to Alaric Steele, holding open a waterproof leather ledger.

“Master,” Guildmaster Lin Ruoli said in a low voice masked by the drumming rain on the wagon roof, “the Quartermaster General just signed over another forty thousand spirit stones to cover the emergency dry-ration and medicinal charcoal shipments. First Prince Huang Wei has been celebrating every night with banquets for his officers, so the royal granary wagons are already half-empty before we have even reached the walls of Azure Fall City.”

On the other side of the wagon, Ya Su adjusted her hooded cloak, a playful smile curving her lips. “The commanders of the Fierce Tiger Unit and the Crimson Feather Archers came to my tent twice this morning begging for priority vouchers on our Blood-Warming Pills. In this cold rain, ordinary soldiers lose their stamina in four hours, and their own alchemists cannot keep up. We own the stomachs and the medicine pouches of half this army without firing a single arrow.”

Alaric Steele chuckled softly, his ruby eyes scanning the dark, jagged silhouettes of the iron-rich mountains rising through the rain five miles ahead.

“Let First Prince Huang Wei enjoy his wine while it lasts,” Alaric Steele said smoothly. “A man who thinks he cannot lose is the easiest man in the world to steer. What did Mu Qing’s forward shadow scouts report from the ridges ahead?”

Guildmaster Lin Ruoli reached into her sleeve and tapped the smooth black glass of her Phone Artifact, keeping it hidden behind the cover of her leather ledger. “Mu Qing sent a message ten minutes ago. The Rising Sun Empire’s Scarlet Crane Unit is burning empty tents and broken crates along the mouth of the Dead Crow Basin to make huge columns of black smoke, while their main regiments are moving up into the high iron crags rather than retreating toward Azure Fall City.”

“He is setting a kettle on the stove and waiting for the frogs to jump in,” Alaric Steele remarked lightly. “Keep our Jade Serpent Merchant Organization wagons and the wagons carrying Yun Lan, Ceanna, and the others at the rear of the column. When the road narrows at the basin entrance tomorrow, make sure at least three of the heavy iron-axle carts ahead of our supply train ‘accidentally’ snap an axle to slow our rear guard down.”

“Understood, Master,” Ya Su purred, her eyes sparkling with amusement. “I know just which clumsy teamsters to put at the choke point.”

Thirty miles northeast of the muddy marching column, high above the clouds and driving rain, stood the Iron-Cloud Citadel.

The fortress was carved directly into the black cliffside of Mount Kurogane, the highest peak overlooking the walled expanse of Azure Fall City and the five iron-mining passes below. Massive walls of dark, riveted iron-stone rose three hundred feet above a sheer abyss, where waterfalls of muddy rainwater plunged into the gorges below.

In the highest watchtower of the Iron-Cloud Citadel, sliding paper doors stood wide open to the howling mountain wind.

General Tokugawa Ieyasu sat cross-legged on a woven reed mat before a low iron brazier. He was a broad-shouldered man in his late fifties, dressed in lacquered black-and-gold lamellar armor with a white horned crescent helm resting on a wooden stand beside him. His Half-Step Martial Emperor aura did not flare outward in flashy displays; instead, it sat around him like the weight of Mount Kurogane itself, steady and immovable.

In front of him stood a large sandbox carved from magnetic ironstone, sculpted into an exact miniature replica of Azure Fall City, the five iron passes, and the narrow, bowl-shaped valley known as the Dead Crow Basin.

Three Martial King commanders of the Rising Sun Empire knelt on the mats across from him: Commander Honda Tadakatsu of the Blood-Moon Samurai Unit, Commander Hattori Hanzo of the Shadow-Mist Shinobi Corps, and Commander Sakakibara Yasumasa of the Ghost-Armored Ashigaru Unit.

Commander Hattori Hanzo, clad in dark gray shinobi cloth that blended with the shadows of the tower, bowed his head. “Lord General Tokugawa. Our scouts confirm that First Prince Huang Wei’s entire force has crossed the Mud-Serpent Ridge. They took the bait of the burned supply carts and the dropped Transmission Jade Slip. Their forward units are marching at double speed to link up with General Cui Hao’s Thunder-Spear Relief Force inside the Dead Crow Basin.”

Commander Honda Tadakatsu rested his gauntleted hands on his knees, a dry chuckle rumbling in his throat. “That young prince of the Celestial Dragon Empire has been throwing victory feasts for twenty-one straight nights since Shattered Pass. My scouts heard his heralds riding up and down the column boasting that he intends to take Azure Fall City before the new moon.”

General Tokugawa Ieyasu picked up an iron poker and stirred the glowing charcoal in the brazier. Sparks rose into the cold air.

“Do not mock First Prince Huang Wei, Tadakatsu,” General Tokugawa said, his voice calm and measured. “An arrogant commander is a gift from the Heavens, and one should always treat gifts with proper courtesy. At Shattered Pass, someone inside their camp saw through our river-dam formation and inverted the outer runes with surgical precision. That person was certainly not First Prince Huang Wei, nor do I believe it was Noble Consort Cui Yulan alone.”

Commander Sakakibara frowned slightly. “You believe they have a hidden grandmaster of array formations traveling with their camp, Lord General?”

“Whoever drew that inversion diagram understood water-vein runoff better than my own senior array masters,” General Tokugawa replied, setting the iron poker down on the hearth. “However, water arrays rely on surface flow and wooden pilings, which can be altered by small shadow squads in the dark. The second layer of our regional defense is a different beast altogether.”

General Tokugawa reached out and picked up seven black-iron pins shaped like seven-pointed stars. One by one, he pressed them into the seven high mountain peaks surrounding the miniature Dead Crow Basin in the sandbox.

“For two months after we captured Azure Fall City, our miners and array masters did not rest,” General Tokugawa continued, his dark eyes reflecting the red glow of the coals. “We did not carve surface runes onto loose boulders. We drove seven thousand-ton pillars of refined magnetic star-iron straight into the subterranean earth-dragon veins beneath the seven peaks of the Dead Crow Basin. This is the ‘Seven-Star Sky-Locking & Earth-Severing Array’.”

Commander Hattori Hanzo leaned forward, studying the seven iron pins in the sandbox. “Once activated, the magnetic iron veins of the seven peaks lock together?”

“More than that,” General Tokugawa said. “The ‘Seven-Star Sky-Locking & Earth-Severing Array’ uses the natural weight of the seven iron-rich mountain leylines to invert the flow of spiritual Qi within a ten-mile radius. Instead of rising from the earth to nourish cultivators, all ambient spiritual Qi is sucked down into the subterranean iron veins and locked beneath the mountain roots. Above the basin, the magnetic field forms a sky-locking dome that shatters every spiritual wave used by a Transmission Jade Slip.”

Commander Honda Tadakatsu grinned beneath his iron war mask. “A spiritually dead pit. Inside that basin, even a Peak Martial King like Noble Consort Cui Yulan cannot draw a single breath of heaven-and-earth spiritual Qi to replenish her Dantian. Every lightning strike she throws will drain her personal reserves permanently until she walks out of the valley.”

“And General Cui Hao’s Thunder-Spear Relief Force is already half-exhausted from three weeks of fighting in the rain,” General Tokugawa said, picking up a small crimson flag representing the Cui Clan and placing it at the bottom of the narrow eastern gorge of the basin. “Hattori, have your Shadow-Mist Shinobi Corps leak one final false signal at dawn. Let General Cui Hao believe our Scarlet Crane Unit is abandoning the eastern gorge to defend the gates of Azure Fall City. He will rush into the eastern belly of the basin to seize the high ground, just as First Prince Huang Wei’s heavy strike forces march in from the western mouth.”

“And when both halves of their army are inside the basin,” Commander Sakakibara said, placing his hand on the hilt of his katana, “we drop the sky-lock.”

“Precisely,” General Tokugawa said, rising smoothly to his feet and walking to the open balcony of the Iron-Cloud Citadel. Below him, the black roofs of Azure Fall City glistened in the rain, surrounded by concentric rings of iron-spiked trenches and ballista towers. “Wait until their heavy strike forces pass the third boundary stone tomorrow morning. Then awaken the seven mountain peaks.”

Dawn on the twenty-second day broke gray and bleak over the jagged teeth of the Dead Crow Basin.

The rain had thinned into a cold, clinging drizzle, leaving the pine forests and black iron-stone cliffs slick with moisture.

At the front of the western approach, First Prince Huang Wei rode atop a white-armored scale-steed, surrounded by fifty elite guards and the fluttering dragon banners of the Fierce Tiger Unit. Ahead of him, the narrow mountain pass opened into a vast, sunken basin flanked by seven towering, flat-topped peaks of dark red iron-rock.

At the far eastern end of the three-mile-wide basin, columns of pale smoke rose into the sky, accompanied by the distant, rhythmic boom of bronze war drums.

A scout from the Wind-Hound Unit galloped back through the muddy defile, leaping from his saddle and dropping to one knee before First Prince Huang Wei’s mount.

“Report!” First Prince Huang Wei called out, resting a hand on his gold-pommeled sword.

“Your Royal Highness!” the scout shouted breathlessly, holding up a scorched Rising Sun banner. “The Rising Sun Empire’s Scarlet Crane Unit is burning their forward palisades at the eastern gorge! And General Cui Hao’s Thunder-Spear Relief Force has just breached the eastern pass and is charging into the basin from the opposite side to pursue them!”

First Prince Huang Wei’s eyes lit up. “General Cui Hao is trying to steal the vanguard credit for routing the eastern garrison? Not under my command! Sound the war horns! Order the Fierce Tiger Unit, the Iron-Scale Heavy Infantry, and the Violet Thunder Strike Force to advance into the basin at the double! Everyone moves in—supply trains, artillery carriages, and reserve units included! We will crush the fleeing enemy in the center of the valley and march straight on to the gates of Azure Fall City before noon!”

Deep bronze war horns echoed across the wet cliffs.

Seventy thousand armored soldiers of the Celestial Dragon Empire roared in unison, their boots splashing through the muddy streams as regiment after regiment poured through the narrow western neck of the Dead Crow Basin.

Ahead of the main infantry blocks, the mercenary scouting companies were pushed forward to clear the boulder fields along the basin floor.

Marching near the left flank of the Iron-Wolf Scouting Unit was a tall, broad-shouldered warrior wearing a scarred iron half-helm and a mud-caked brigandine cloak. Across his back hung a massive, unpolished black-iron greatsword wrapped in frayed leather strips.

To the thirty mercenaries trudging around him, he was Lieutenant Mo Chen, a silent, bad-tempered veteran hired three weeks ago before the battle of Shattered Pass.

Under the shadowed rim of his iron helm, Corbin spat a mouthful of muddy rainwater onto the rocks.

His boots squelched in the red iron-clay as he climbed over a fallen pine log, his eyes scanning the silent, towering ridges of the seven surrounding peaks.

“Lieutenant Mo,” called out Sergeant Zhao, a one-eyed Grand Martialist walking beside him with a notched broadsword. “Look at those burned carts ahead. The short-dwarves of the Rising Sun dropped half their iron arrowheads in the mud when they ran. At this rate, we might actually collect our bonus silver at Azure Fall City without losing another leg!”

Corbin did not smile. His scarred hand reached back and gripped the thick leather hilt of his black-iron greatsword.

“Look at the wheel ruts beside those burned carts, Sergeant,” Corbin growled, his voice rough like grinding stones. “The ruts are less than half an inch deep in wet clay. Those carts were empty when they dragged them here and set them on fire.”

Sergeant Zhao blinked his one good eye, squinting at the muddy tracks. “Empty? Why would they drag empty carts out here just to burn—”

Before Sergeant Zhao could finish his sentence, the ground beneath the Dead Crow Basin gave a deep, subterranean shudder.

It was not the sharp crack of an explosion or the rumble of a landslide. It sounded as though seven giant iron vault doors had slammed shut ten thousand feet beneath the mountain roots.

High atop the seven red-iron peaks ringing the basin, seven beams of dark, heavy ochre light shot briefly toward the low gray clouds and linked together into a faint, seven-pointed star before sinking into the rock.

In the next breath, the air inside the Dead Crow Basin turned as heavy as lead.

Corbin’s stride faltered for half a second as a sudden, suffocating emptiness pressed against his chest. All around him, the mercenaries of the Iron-Wolf Scouting Unit gasped and grabbed at their throats or their lower abdomens.

In front of Corbin’s eyes, a pale blue text box flickered into view.

[System Warning: Ambient Spiritual Qi Severed. Hostile Formation Detected: “Seven-Star Sky-Locking & Earth-Severing Array”.]

[System Notification: Subterranean Leyline Suppression Active. Natural Qi Recovery Reduced to 0%. Spiritual Transmission Waves Blocked.]

[System Notification: Deep Structural Node Scan Available. Cost: 500 System Points. Current Balance: 0 System Points. Insufficient Points—Scan Aborted.]

Corbin’s jaw clenched so hard his molars ground together. Zero points. Ever since that catastrophic night in the subterranean abyss when an unseen monster had hijacked the space, stolen Noble Consort Cui Yulan’s bloodline, and framed him before the entire empire, his Heavenly Martial God System had been starved of every last point, leaving him scraping through the mud as a disguised mercenary lieutenant just to stay close enough to find the culprit.

“My Dantian!” Sergeant Zhao wheezed beside him, dropping to one knee as the faint yellow Battle Aura around his blade flickered out like a snuffed candle. “I cannot draw a single thread of spiritual Qi from the air! The mountain air is dead!”

Half a mile behind the scouting units, near the western mouth of the basin, the main columns of First Prince Huang Wei’s army ground to a confused, chaotic halt.

Atop her war carriage, Noble Consort Cui Yulan stood on the driver’s platform, her dark violet armor ringing as she drew her long thunder-lance. Her silver eyes widened as she swept her spiritual perception across the valley.

The seven iron peaks were not merely hosting an array; the mountains themselves had become the array.

One hundred yards behind her carriage, Alaric Steele stepped out onto the footboard of his gray medicinal wagon, pushing his bamboo umbrella back a few inches to look up at the seven peaks.

For the first time since entering the eastern borderlands, Alaric Steele’s eyebrows rose in genuine surprise.

Through his Level 69 Peak Archmage perception, the subterranean world beneath the Dead Crow Basin lit up like a map of molten iron chains. General Tokugawa Ieyasu had not laid down a standard surface formation that could be inverted by moving four cornerstones. Instead, the Rising Sun commander had tapped directly into seven primordial iron-dragon leylines running deep beneath the mountain range, using seven colossal pillars of magnetic star-iron to pull the region’s spiritual Qi downward into the earth’s crust while turning the sky above into a sealed iron bowl.

Even with his Archmage mastery over spatial geometry and runic matrices, rewriting seven linked mountain leylines in an instant would require Alaric Steele to unleash his full Peak Archmage domain and physically tear open the mountain roots with Beast Emperor force—an act that would light him up like a second sun in front of every cultivator on the border.

Alaric Steele lowered his umbrella slightly, his ruby eyes narrowing in rapid calculation as he watched the eastern end of the basin.

Two miles away across the boulder-strewn floor, General Cui Hao and twelve thousand armored soldiers of the Cui Clan’s Thunder-Spear Relief Force had just charged out of the eastern gorge into the deepest, lowest pit of the basin. The moment the “Seven-Star Sky-Locking & Earth-Severing Array” locked the sky, thick curtains of dark ochre earth-energy rose from the central ridge of the basin, cutting the valley in half and separating General Cui Hao’s relief force from the western approach!

At the same time, along the high cliffs above the eastern pit, thousands of crimson banners bearing the crest of the Rising Sun Empire snapped open in the wind.

The Blood-Moon Samurai Unit and the Iron-Demon Heavy Halberdiers had been waiting in the iron caves along the upper cliffs all morning!

“Cui Hao!” Noble Consort Cui Yulan’s voice rang out from the top of her war carriage, sharp and raw with sudden alarm.

She raised a Transmission Jade Slip to her forehead and poured a surge of her stored Nine-Heavens Violet-Gold Suanni Battle Aura into the stone.

Snap!

The green jade slip cracked straight down the middle in her fingers, its spiritual wave rebounding off the magnetic sky-lock and crumbling into useless green dust.

“The array has severed all spiritual transmissions!” Master Array Formulator Yan, an elderly scholar riding beside First Prince Huang Wei’s carriage, cried out in horror as his brass compass spun wildly and shattered. “Your Royal Highness! General Tokugawa has bound the seven mountain leylines into the ‘Seven-Star Sky-Locking & Earth-Severing Array’! Any cultivator who stays inside the lower basin will be drained of all Battle Aura without a drop of ambient spiritual Qi to recover!”

Atop his white scale-steed, First Prince Huang Wei’s smug smile vanished, replaced by a pale, wide-eyed panic as the sound of ten thousand Rising Sun war drums thundered from the cliffs ahead.

“Drained?!” First Prince Huang Wei stammered, yanking hard on his reins so his steed reared back in the mud. “Why did the scouts not see this?! General Sun! Form a circle around my carriage! Protect this prince!”

“First Prince Huang Wei!” Noble Consort Cui Yulan shouted, leaping from her carriage roof onto the back of a war-steed and pointing her thunder-lance toward the central ridge dividing the basin. “General Cui Hao and the Cui Clan’s Thunder-Spear Relief Force are trapped in the eastern pit! The central earth-curtain has not fully solidified around the third boundary stone! If we charge the Fierce Tiger Unit and the Black Tortoise Shield Corps through the central gap right now, we can break the encirclement and pull my brother’s forces out!”

First Prince Huang Wei looked at the dark ochre barrier rising across the middle of the basin and the thousands of dark-armored samurai pouring down the eastern slopes, then looked down at his own trembling hands. “Charge deeper into a Qi-dead trap?! Are you mad, Noble Consort Cui?! If my Fierce Tiger Unit loses its Battle Aura in that pit, who will guard my royal person?!”

In the gray medicinal wagon behind the command column, Alaric Steele lifted his Phone Artifact inside his wide sleeve. Because his Phone Artifact operated on pure Void-resonance rather than ambient spiritual Qi waves, the magnetic mountain array did not affect its signal by a single hair.

He tapped a single runic key, opening a silent voice line to the two Phone Artifacts tucked inside the sleeves of Imperial Consort Xian Zhao Mengxue and Imperial Consort Shu Su Xinyue.

“Mengxue, Xinyue,” Alaric Steele spoke quietly under the sound of the rain. “Pull the main army, the Black Tortoise Shield Corps, and our supply train up onto the high western stone shelf outside the primary drain zone. Leave the eastern pit closed. Let General Cui Hao and the Cui Clan’s relief force stew in General Tokugawa’s pot.”

Inside the second imperial carriage, Imperial Consort Xian Zhao Mengxue and Imperial Consort Shu Su Xinyue felt the faint vibration against their wrists and heard their Master’s calm voice through the tiny ear-beads hidden beneath their hair ornaments.

Neither woman hesitated for a heartbeat.

Imperial Consort Xian Zhao Mengxue pushed open the carriage doors and stepped out onto the gilded platform, her crimson robes fluttering as her Late-Stage Martial King voice projected clearly over the panicking officers.

“First Prince Huang Wei! Listen to your mother!” Imperial Consort Xian Zhao Mengxue commanded sharply.

First Prince Huang Wei whipped his head around, looking at her like a drowning man spotting a plank of wood. “Mother!”

“Do not panic, my son—a true commander uses the high ground when the valley shifts!” Imperial Consort Xian Zhao Mengxue called out, pointing her jade-ringed finger toward the broad, terraced shelf of black rock rising along the western rim of the basin, just outside the third boundary stone where the leyline suppression was weakest. “Look at the western cliff shelf! The array’s earth-vein pull is concentrated in the eastern gorge to trap General Cui Hao! If you order the Black Tortoise Shield Corps and the Fierce Tiger Unit to pivot left and seize the western stone shelf immediately, we retain our ambient Qi connection and keep our supply train intact!”

Imperial Consort Shu Su Xinyue stepped out beside her, her voice smooth and urgent as she addressed General Sun Ba and Quartermaster General Luo Feng. “General Sun! Quartermaster General Luo! If the main army rushes blindly into the eastern pit without ambient spiritual Qi, seventy thousand men will become target practice for the Rising Sun archers! Pivot the heavy shields to the western shelf and haul the artillery carriages up the slope at once!”

“Mother is right!” First Prince Huang Wei shouted, seizing on the excuse that made his retreat sound like a tactical maneuver. “Did you hear Imperial Consort Xian?! A wise general never fights on the enemy’s chosen ground! I was just about to order a pivot to the western shelf! Sound the golden gongs! Fierce Tiger Unit, Black Tortoise Shield Corps, Crimson Feather Archers—wheel left and take the high western shelf! Anyone who marches past the third boundary stone without my order will be flogged!”

“Wait!” Noble Consort Cui Yulan’s voice cracked like a whip as she rode her scale-steed through the churning mud toward First Prince Huang Wei. Her silver eyes blazed with disbelief and rising dread. “If you pull the Black Tortoise Shield Corps and the Fierce Tiger Unit back to the western shelf, the central earth-curtain will seal completely! My brother General Cui Hao and twelve thousand warriors of the Cui Clan are down in that eastern gorge without ambient spiritual Qi!”

“Then General Cui Hao should have looked at the wheel ruts before charging in!” First Prince Huang Wei snapped, already kicking his white scale-steed up the rocky ramp toward the western shelf while fifty royal guards Jogged around him with raised tower shields. “Once we secure the high shelf and have the array masters study the stones for a few days, I will figure out a way to rescue him! Sound the gongs!”

Clang! Clang! Clang!

The brass retreat gongs rang out across the western half of the basin.

General Sun Ba and Quartermaster General Luo Feng immediately barked orders, turning the massive infantry blocks of the Fierce Tiger Unit and the Black Tortoise Shield Corps away from the center of the basin and marching them up the wide stone terraces of the western rim. Behind them, Guildmaster Lin Ruoli and Ya Su directed the Jade Serpent Merchant Organization wagons and Alaric Steele’s medicinal pavilion carts smoothly up the pre-cleared gravel trail onto the safest plateau of the western shelf.

Noble Consort Cui Yulan sat frozen in her saddle at the edge of the slope, the cold rain streaming down her pale cheeks and dripping off the chin-guard of her violet helm.

Four hundred yards ahead of her, the seven iron peaks hummed with a deep, ear-splitting vibration.

Boom!

A wall of dense, dark-gold magnetic earth-light dropped from the sky like an iron guillotine right along the central ridge of the Dead Crow Basin, sealing the eastern pit off from the western shelf.

Through the semi-transparent, shimmering haze of the array barrier, Noble Consort Cui Yulan could see the banners of the Cui Clan’s Thunder-Spear Relief Force down in the dark gorge below. Volleys of flaming arrows rained down from the upper cliffs onto her brother’s surrounded troops, while regiment after regiment of the Rising Sun Empire’s Blood-Moon Samurai Unit closed the ring around the gorge floor. Because the array cut off all sound and spiritual waves across the central barrier, the distant slaughter unfolded in eerie, suffocating silence, like a nightmare behind thick glass.

Noble Consort Cui Yulan dug her heels into her mount, about to charge down the slope alone to strike the barrier with her lance, when Commander Jin spurred his steed in front of her and lowered his golden halberd across her path.

“Noble Consort Cui!” Commander Jin said, his Half-Step Martial Emperor voice grim and respectful. “The ‘Seven-Star Sky-Locking & Earth-Severing Array’ is anchored to seven mountain leylines! Even if you burn every drop of your Peak Martial King essence against that central barrier, the rebound shockwave will only shatter your own heart-meridians without denting the earth-vein lock!”

“Move aside, Commander Jin!” Noble Consort Cui Yulan rasped, her knuckles white around the shaft of her lance, a thin trickle of blood running from her lower lip where her teeth had bitten into the flesh. “My elder brother is down there! If the Thunder-Spear Relief Force is wiped out in that gorge, the Cui Clan—”

She stopped herself before saying the rest aloud, her chest heaving beneath her dark violet breastplate. If General Cui Hao died here after losing Azure Fall City, the Cui Clan would lose both its heir and its northern legions, leaving their ancestral house defenseless when Emperor Huang Long eventually learned the truth.

While the main army scrambled up onto the western stone shelf, the scouting units that had advanced into the boulder fields near the edge of the third boundary stone were caught in a frantic fighting withdrawal through the thick gray fog rolling off the basin floor.

Down among the jagged iron boulders, Corbin yanked his heavy black-iron greatsword free from the mud.

Around him, the thirty men of the Iron-Wolf Scouting Unit were coughing and stumbling as the outer edge of the “Seven-Star Sky-Locking & Earth-Severing Array” sucked the ambient spiritual Qi out of the valley air. Every breath felt thin and metallic, tasting of wet rust.

“The gongs sounded from the western ridge!” Sergeant Zhao shouted, wiping rain from his scarred face. “The prince is pulling the main army up the western shelf! Fall back before we get locked on the wrong side of the boundary stones!”

“Wait,” Corbin growled, his eyes locking onto a cluster of dark red iron obelisks protruding from a rocky knoll three hundred yards to the north, right where the base of the first mountain peak met the basin floor. Faint lines of ochre runic light pulsed along the base of the obelisks, feeding into the subterranean leyline beneath the cliff.

“A secondary relay node,” Corbin muttered, his heart thumping against his ribs. Even without his system’s 500-point deep scan, he had seen enough array formations in this world to recognize a surface stabilizer. If he could smash that secondary relay node with his greatsword and open even a temporary gap in the western array curtain, Noble Consort Cui Yulan or the imperial generals on the ridge would see him do it. He could win an immediate promotion into the inner perimeter guards and finally get close enough to the high command tents to hunt down the bastard who had framed him!

“Sergeant Zhao! Bring ten men and cover my flank!” Corbin barked, pointing his greatsword toward the northern knoll. “Those iron obelisks on the slope are stabilizing the western edge of the array! If we crack them, the Qi lock on this side weakens!”

Sergeant Zhao stared at him as if he had grown two heads. “Crack a mountain array node without ambient Qi?! Lieutenant Mo, are you tired of living?!”

Before Corbin could take three strides up the rocky incline toward the obelisks, the wet bushes and boulder shadows along the knoll rustled with the sharp, synchronized hiss of drawn steel.

Twenty warriors clad in dark crimson lacquered armor and horned iron masks stepped out from behind the rocks, moving in a tight, disciplined crescent. Each warrior gripped a long, curved katana with two hands, their boots sliding smoothly over the wet stones without making a sound.

At their center stood a tall samurai wearing a silver-trimmed haori over his armor—Captain Takahashi of the Crimson Blade Samurai Squad, an elite Grandmaster Martialist of the Rising Sun Empire, flanked by nineteen Master and Grand Martialist samurai.

“Celestial Dragon rats sniffing around the First Star Pillar,” Captain Takahashi said coldly, raising his katana until the razor edge pointed between Corbin’s eyes. “Cut their hamstrings and leave them in the mud.”

“Ambush!” Sergeant Zhao roared, raising his notched broadsword as the nineteen samurai lunged down the slope like a pack of red wolves.

Steel clashed against steel in a shower of sparks.

Deprived of ambient spiritual Qi, the mercenaries of the Iron-Wolf Scouting Unit found their movements sluggish. Within three heartbeats, two scouts on the left flank screamed as curved katanas sliced through their leather neck-guards, sending hot blood spraying across the wet gray rocks.

Corbin did not channel wasteful Battle Aura flares from his Dantian. Instead, he sank his weight into his hips, his muscles coiling like iron springs as he relied on pure physical strength and condensed Sword Intent.

Two Crimson Blade samurai leaped at him from left and right, their katanas whistling through the rain in a scissor cut aimed at his ribs and throat.

Corbin stepped forward instead of back.

He swung his sixty-pound black-iron greatsword in a brutal, horizontal arc.

A sharp, humming edge of pale silver Sword Intent condensed half an inch along the blunt black iron of his blade.

Clang—crunch!

The heavy greatsword sheared straight through the first samurai’s raised katana, snapping the folded steel blade in two before slamming into the man’s crimson breastplate. Iron lamellae caved inward like wet paper as ribs shattered, and the sheer force of Corbin’s swing hurled the first samurai into the second, sending both men tumbling twenty feet down the boulder pile with broken chests.

“He is a Sword Intent practitioner!” Captain Takahashi shouted, his eyes narrowing behind his iron mask. “Three-man binding formation—pin his heavy blade!”

Three veteran samurai rushed Corbin at once. Two struck low at his knees with hooked pole-daggers while the third lunged high for his visor.

Corbin pivoted on his heel, slamming the flat of his wide greatsword into the mud like an iron shield. The two hooked pole-daggers skittered harmlessly off the slab of black iron with screeching sparks. Before the third samurai could recover his lunge, Corbin released his left hand from the greatsword pommel, stepped inside the man’s guard, and drove his iron-gauntleted elbow straight into the center of the samurai’s iron mask.

Crack!

The iron mask split, and the samurai’s head snapped back into the mud, lifeless.

Corbin wrenched his greatsword out of the clay in an upward diagonal cleave, splitting one of the pole-dagger wielders from hip to shoulder, while Sergeant Zhao and four surviving scouts hacked down the third.

Captain Takahashi leaped down from a six-foot boulder, gripping his katana with both hands as a condensed crimson blade-glow—drawn straight from his personal Grandmaster Dantian reserves—wrapped around the steel.

“Crimson Moon Split!” Captain Takahashi roared, bringing the katana down in a vertical slash that clove the rain in two.

Corbin planted his boots wide in the red clay, sinking three inches into the mud, and swung his black-iron greatsword upward with both hands to meet the descending katana.

Boom!

The shockwave of pure Sword Intent colliding with Grandmaster Battle Aura blasted a ring of mud and rainwater ten feet outward. Captain Takahashi gasped in shock as a spiderweb of cracks ran down his prized katana; Corbin’s raw physical strength, honed through dozens of life-and-death system trials before his points were wiped out, weighed down on him like a falling boulder.

Before Captain Takahashi could leap back to reset his stance, Corbin twisted the hilt of his greatsword, snapping the cracked katana blade at the guard, and kicked his heavy boot squarely into Captain Takahashi’s stomach.

The Rising Sun captain slammed backward against a jagged boulder, coughing up a mouthful of blood. Corbin lunged forward and drove the point of his black-iron greatsword straight through the throat of Captain Takahashi’s armor, pinning him to the rock.

The remaining half-dozen samurai of the squad saw their captain killed in four exchanges and immediately blew a sharp bamboo whistle, leaping backward up the slick rocks toward the northern knoll.

“After them!” Corbin snarled, wrenching his greatsword free and charging up the slope toward the glowing red-iron obelisks of the array node. “If I can reach that pillar—”

Twang-twang-twang-twang!

From the pine ledges forty feet above the northern knoll, a hundred dark shapes clad in rain-slicked gray cloth materialized among the branches. It was a full detachment of the Rising Sun Empire’s Shadow-Mist Shinobi Corps, backed by two hundred Ghost-Armored Ashigaru spearmen locking heavy iron-wood pikes along the narrow cliff path.

A black storm of armor-piercing iron bolts rained down onto the slope in front of Corbin’s boots.

Corbin swung his greatsword in a blurring figure-eight, knocking six heavy iron bolts out of the air with numbing clangs, while a seventh bolt grazed his left shoulder pauldron and tore a bloody furrow across his deltoid.

Behind him, two scouts who tried to follow him up the slope were pinned to the dirt by a dozen iron bolts through their chests.

Above the wall of locked pikes on the northern ledge, a Rising Sun array officer raised a black iron talisman. A secondary curtain of dark ochre earth-light rippled outward from the red-iron obelisks, sealing the entire northern slope behind a twenty-foot-thick barrier of compressed mountain Qi.

“Lieutenant Mo! Fall back!” Sergeant Zhao yelled from the boulder line below, dragging a wounded scout by the collar. “There are three hundred shinobi and ashigaru pikes guarding that ridge, and the array barrier just closed over the obelisks! If you stay on that slope another ten seconds, they will turn you into a porcupine!”

Corbin stood in the pouring rain, blood dripping from his gashed left shoulder down the flat of his greatsword. He stared furiously at the sealed ochre barrier covering the array node and the hundreds of cold iron pike-tips gleaming on the ledge above.

Without his system points to buy a spatial-breaching talisman or a node-cracking skill, he could not even scratch the outer casing of General Tokugawa’s mountain formation.

“Damn it all!” Corbin spat blood and rainwater onto the stones, turning on his heel and sprinting back down the boulder field into the retreating ranks of the scouting unit as another volley of iron bolts hissed into the mud behind his heels.

By nightfall, a heavy, suffocating gloom settled over the fortified encampment on the high western stone shelf.

Because the western shelf sat right along the outer rim of the “Seven-Star Sky-Locking & Earth-Severing Array”, the ambient spiritual Qi on the plateau was thin and sluggish, like water trickling through a clogged pipe, while all long-range spiritual transmissions remained cut off by the magnetic dome overhead. Down in the deep eastern gorge below the central barrier, the red glow of watchfires and the occasional flash of martial techniques showed that General Cui Hao’s surrounded Thunder-Spear Relief Force was still fighting off wave after wave of night probes by the Rising Sun Empire’s Blood-Moon Samurai Unit.

In the safest, dryest rear terrace of the western shelf—sheltered behind a natural windbreak of towering black crags and surrounded by the guarded wagons of the Jade Serpent Merchant Organization—stood Alaric Steele’s spacious silk command pavilion.

While the rest of the army shivered in damp tents and chewed on cold salted rations, the interior of Alaric Steele’s pavilion was warm, quiet, and fragrant.

An invisible “Sound-Severed Void Ward” and a “Heaven-Shrouding Stillness Formation” were woven seamlessly into the silk walls and the stone floor beneath the thick woolen carpets, ensuring that not a single whisper, sigh, or fluctuation of heat could escape the tent. In the corner, a carved bronze brazier burned blocks of aged spirit-sandalwood, filling the air with a rich, soothing aroma that banished the smell of mud and iron outside.

Upon the wide, fur-draped bed in the inner section of the pavilion, Alaric Steele lay propped against a pile of dark crimson velvet pillows, completely naked, his muscular, chiseled frame glowing in the warm amber light of the oil lamps.

With him on the wide bed were two women of breathtaking, mature beauty: Grand Elder Yun Lan of the Frozen Cloud Asgard and Saintess Ceanna Paxton.

Both women had shed their outer cloaks and robes, leaving their lush, voluptuous bodies bare to his touch and his ruby eyes.

Grand Elder Yun Lan knelt straddling Alaric Steele’s thighs, her pale, snow-white skin flushed a deep, sensual pink from neck to waist. For a woman who had spent decades cultivating ice arts atop a frozen mountain peak, her body in private was a study in scorching contrast. Her large, full breasts—heavy and round, tipped with stiff rosy nipples—swayed inches above Alaric Steele’s chest as her hands braced against his broad shoulders. Her waist was slender and supple, flaring out into wide, fertile hips and a pair of plump, round buttocks that rested against his thighs.

Beside them on the furs knelt Saintess Ceanna Paxton, her golden hair tumbling in loose waves over her bare shoulders. Her body was equally voluptuous, with huge, pillowy breasts pressed against Alaric Steele’s left side as she trailed soft, worshipful kisses along his jawline and neck, her round buttocks raised invitingly on the silk sheets while her slender fingers stroked his chest.

“Master…” Yun Lan breathed softly, her head tipping back as a low, sultry moan escaped her lips.

She lifted her wide hips slowly and then sank back down onto Alaric Steele’s thick, throbbing cock, taking every hot, hard inch of his length deep inside her wet, tight pussy.

Her inner walls, slick and scorching hot, clenched around his shaft with a desperate, greedy rhythm. Every time Yun Lan rolled her hips, the heavy globes of her large breasts bounced in the amber lamplight, and the soft, wet sounds of their skin meeting filled the quiet bedchamber.

Alaric Steele groaned with pure physical satisfaction, his large hands sliding from her thin waist down to grip her full, round buttocks. He squeezed the firm, yielding flesh of her ass in both hands and drove his hips upward with a deep, powerful thrust.

“Ah—! Master!” Yun Lan gasped, her fingers tightening on his shoulders as her tight pussy spasmed around his cock from the force of the stroke. Her cool, dignified composure as the revered elder of the Frozen Cloud Asgard was gone, replaced by raw, trembling lust as she rode him harder, her round buttocks slapping softly against his thighs with each downward plunge.

“Look at you, Yun Lan,” Alaric Steele murmured, a wicked smile playing on his lips as one hand slid up from her narrow waist to cup the heavy weight of her right breast, rolling her hard nipple between his thumb and forefinger. “Out in the camp, every martialist in the empire thinks the Grand Elder of the Frozen Cloud Asgard is an untouchable statue of ice, yet here you are soaking my bed.”

“I belong only to you, Master,” Yun Lan panted, her cheeks burning crimson as she leaned forward so he could take her other nipple into his mouth, her tight pussy clamping down on his shaft as he sucked on the sensitive peak. “My body… every inch of it is yours to enjoy whenever you desire…”

Beside him, Ceanna Paxton let out a needy whimper, rubbing her own heavy, soft breasts against Alaric Steele’s arm while her hand slid down between her thighs.

Alaric Steele turned his head and captured Ceanna Paxton’s soft lips in a deep, possessive kiss, his tongue tangling with hers while he continued thrusting upward into Yun Lan’s tight, wet heat. After a long moment, he gave Yun Lan’s round buttocks a playful slap and lifted her effortlessly off his glistening shaft.

“Your turn, Ceanna,” Alaric Steele said, his voice a low baritone. “Get on your hands and knees.”

“Yes, Master,” Ceanna Paxton whispered eagerly, her blue eyes dark with lust as she positioned herself in the center of the furs, arching her slender back and lifting her plump, round buttocks high in the air while her large breasts brushed the soft velvet sheets below.

Alaric Steele knelt behind her, gripping her narrow waist with one hand while guiding his slick, rock-hard cock against the soaked folds of her tight pussy. With one smooth, heavy thrust, he buried himself to the hilt inside her.

“Ohhh, Master!” Ceanna Paxton cried out into the silk pillows, her fingers twisting into the furs as her tight pussy stretched around his thick length.

While Yun Lan lay beside them, kissing Ceanna Paxton’s flushed cheek and pressing her own large breasts against Ceanna Paxton’s shoulder, Alaric Steele gripped Ceanna Paxton’s wide hips and fucked her with long, rhythmic, powerful strokes. The sight of her thin waist flexing into the lush curve of her round buttocks with every heavy thrust fed his primal appetite, driving both women into breathless, shivering peaks of physical pleasure until the sandalwood-scented air of the inner bedchamber was thick with their ragged breathing and soft, contented sighs.

Half an hour later, after a simple cleansing spell removed every trace of sweat from the room and fresh velvet covers were drawn over the bed, Yun Lan and Ceanna Paxton dressed in their clean robes, bowed with warm, devoted smiles, and slipped quietly into the rear living quarters behind the warded partition curtain.

Alaric Steele pulled on his simple gray healer’s robes, tied his linen sash, and walked out into the front consultation chamber of the pavilion.

He picked up two fresh blocks of aged spirit-sandalwood from a lacquered box and dropped them onto the glowing coals of the bronze brazier. Thin ribbons of fragrant white smoke curled upward, filling the consultation area with the warm, unmistakable scent of sandalwood that Noble Consort Cui Yulan’s mind had already come to associate with safety and relief from pain.

Right on cue, the heavy boots of Half-Step Martial Emperor Commander Jin crunched to a halt on the gravel outside the pavilion entrance, accompanied by four Peak Martial King royal guards who took up positions fifty paces away along the perimeter rope.

“Physician Alaric,” Commander Jin’s deep voice called respectfully from outside the tent flap. “Noble Consort Cui Yulan has arrived for her evening meridian stabilization.”

Alaric Steele immediately smoothed his expression into a mask of gentle, humble deference, bowing his head slightly as he stepped forward and drew back the heavy canvas flap.

“Please enter, Noble Consort Cui,” Alaric Steele said softly. “And thank you, Commander Jin. As always, the procedure requires quiet so her internal lightning pathways do not suffer a rebound.”

“We will hold the perimeter at fifty paces, Physician Alaric,” Commander Jin said with a bow before stepping back into the rain.

Noble Consort Cui Yulan stepped inside the pavilion, and Alaric Steele closed and tied the canvas flap behind her, sealing the room within the silent protection of his “Sound-Severed Void Ward”.

The moment the flap closed, the iron mask of the invincible Peak Martial King commander cracked.

Noble Consort Cui Yulan stood in the center of the wool carpet, her dark violet armor still damp from the mountain drizzle. Her shoulders were pulled tight as bowstrings, and when she raised her hands to unfasten the silver clasp of her cloak, her fingers trembled so badly that the metal hook slipped three times against the ring.

Faint, erratic sparks of violet-gold lightning skittered uncontrolled across the plates of her gauntlets, making a sharp snapping sound in the quiet tent. Her face was pale, with dark shadows beneath her silver eyes from standing on the windy ridge all afternoon watching the sealed eastern pit.

Alaric Steele stepped forward without a word. His warm, steady hands gently covered her cold, trembling fingers on the cloak clasp.

Noble Consort Cui Yulan flinched slightly at the sudden touch, her breath hitching in her throat, before she looked up into his calm ruby eyes and inhaled a deep lungful of the warm sandalwood-scented air.

“Your hands are like ice, Noble Consort Cui,” Alaric Steele said, his voice a low, soothing murmur that seemed to wrap around her frayed nerves like a warm blanket. “Allow this humble healer to unfasten your armor. You have been standing on the cliff edge in the rain for ten hours while channeling your spiritual sense against General Tokugawa’s mountain array.”

Noble Consort Cui Yulan did not pull away. Slowly, she let her hands drop to her sides as Alaric Steele deftly unhooked her heavy wet cloak, unbuckled her dark violet breastplate and pauldrons, and set the cold metal armor neatly on a wooden stand beside the brazier.

Left in her thin, high-collared violet silk inner tunic and martial trousers—which clung to her tall, athletic, yet lush and curvy figure—Noble Consort Cui Yulan walked over to the padded wooden treatment table near the sandalwood brazier and sat on the edge, her hands clenching the cotton sheet on her lap.

“Did you see the eastern gorge today, Alaric?” Noble Consort Cui Yulan asked, her voice barely above a whisper, dropping his formal title in the quiet isolation of the tent without even realizing she had done so.

“I saw the barrier drop from the ridge, Noble Consort Cui,” Alaric Steele replied gently, pouring a cup of warm honey-ginger infusion and placing it into her cold hands. “The ‘Seven-Star Sky-Locking & Earth-Severing Array’ is bound to the seven iron veins of the mountain range.”

Noble Consort Cui Yulan stared down at the golden liquid trembling in her cup. “My elder brother, General Cui Hao, is down in that dark gorge with twelve thousand men of our Cui Clan. They have had no ambient spiritual Qi since dawn. Every hour, I can see the flashes of blade-light growing dimmer down in the pit as their Dantians run dry. And First Prince Huang Wei…”

Her fingers tightened around the porcelain cup until her knuckles turned chalk-white.

“First Prince Huang Wei sits in his heated carriage on the western shelf drinking plum wine and ordering the Black Tortoise Shield Corps to dig defensive trenches for himself! Even Imperial Consort Xian and Imperial Consort Shu stood beside him and told the generals to abandon the central gap! No one in this entire camp cares if my brother and the Cui Clan’s last northern army are slaughtered down in the mud!”

A hot tear slipped free from Noble Consort Cui Yulan’s silver eyelashes, rolling down her pale cheek and splashing onto the back of her thumb. She bit her lip hard, furious at her own display of weakness, and quickly turned her face toward the brazier.

Alaric Steele took the teacup from her trembling hands, set it on the side table, and stepped directly in front of her.

He placed a warm palm gently against the side of her neck, right over her pulsing carotid artery, while his thumb brushed away the tear track on her cheek.

“I care, Noble Consort Cui,” Alaric Steele said softly, his voice vibrating with quiet, unwavering warmth as a subtle whisper of his Resonant Heart skill resonated with the sandalwood aroma filling her lungs. “Do not carry the weight of this entire war alone inside this tent. Out there, you must be the unbreakable commander in dark violet armor. In here, with me, you do not need to wear armor.”

Noble Consort Cui Yulan let out a long, shuddering breath. For a woman who had spent months haunted by the memory of being violated in the dark by Corbin, the touch of any other man would have made her draw her blade in an instant. Yet Alaric Steele’s touch—paired with the familiar, comforting scent of spirit-sandalwood—made the crushing terror in her chest melt away into a deep, aching vulnerability.

Without speaking, she leaned her forehead forward for three full seconds against Alaric Steele’s chest, her tall frame trembling slightly as she breathed in the sandalwood scent clinging to his gray robes.

“My meridians are burning again,” Noble Consort Cui Yulan whispered against his collar, her voice small and exhausted. “When I tried to force my spiritual sense through the mountain array today, the magnetic rebound struck my Governing Vessel. The Nine-Heavens Violet-Gold Suanni lightning in my Dantian feels like a caged beast clawing at my ribs.”

“Lie down on the mat, Yulan,” Alaric Steele murmured gently, slipping her given name into his soft speech like a natural caress. “Unfasten the back of your silk tunic and let me calm the storm for you.”

Noble Consort Cui Yulan did not correct him for using her given name. A faint flush rose to her ears as she climbed onto the padded table, loosened the silk ties at the back of her violet tunic, and lay face-down on the soft cotton mat, exposing the smooth, ivory expanse of her toned, graceful back down to the curve of her narrow waist and the upper swell of her round, firm buttocks beneath her silk trousers.

Alaric Steele warmed a few drops of sandalwood-infused spirit oil between his palms and placed both hands flat against her bare upper back, right over the Shenzhu acupoint between her shoulder blades.

Noble Consort Cui Yulan let out a soft, involuntary sigh into the cotton pillow, her toes curling slightly as the heat of his palms sank through her skin.

With slow, methodical precision, Alaric Steele pressed his thumbs down along the Lingtai and Zhiyang acupoints along her spine, guiding a gentle, warm stream of purified mana—disguised as soothing wood-and-water healing Qi—into her agitated Governing Vessel. Everywhere his fingers glided over her bare skin, the erratic, painful static of her Nine-Heavens Violet-Gold Suanni lightning smoothed out into a warm, docile current flowing effortlessly back toward her lower Dantian.

His hands moved in slow, firm circles from her Jianjing shoulder acupoints down the supple arch of her lower back to the Mingmen acupoint at her narrow waist, kneading away every knot of muscle tension and array-rebound strain.

“Your brother General Cui Hao is a seasoned commander of the Cui Clan,” Alaric Steele spoke in a slow, rhythmic cadence as his thumbs massaged the deep acupoints above her hips, matching his voice to the slow rise and fall of her breathing in the sandalwood smoke. “The Thunder-Spear Relief Force carries heavy shield walls and stored spirit-stone rations. Even inside the ‘Seven-Star Sky-Locking & Earth-Severing Array’, General Tokugawa will not waste his elite samurai in a reckless frontal charge when he can wait for their stamina to drop. You have time, Yulan. As long as you keep your own foundation whole and listen to my guidance, I will not let you fall.”

Under the firm, sensual pressure of his hands sliding up and down her bare back and the thick, intoxicating scent of sandalwood filling every breath she took, Noble Consort Cui Yulan’s eyelids grew heavy. The panicked racing of her heart slowed to a steady, tranquil beat, and her fingers uncurled on the mat as she sank deeper into the warm, safe sanctuary of his touch.

“Do not stop yet, Alaric,” Noble Consort Cui Yulan murmured drowsily into the pillow, her cheek resting on her folded forearm as she surrendered the last of her guard to the hands moving across her bare skin. “Stay with me a little longer tonight.”

“As long as you need, Yulan,” Alaric Steele replied softly, his warm hands gliding slowly down the smooth curve of her waist while the rain pattered harmlessly against the silk roof of the pavilion.
