Chapter 507 - Talk with Primus
Chapter 507 - Talk with Primus
Noah fell into solemn silence, looking intensely at Primus, his thoughts churning inside his head relentlessly.
The words of Primus were not ones to be taken lightly, considering the magnitude of what he was asking. However, before he even got to the point of considering the proposal, there were still many fogs left to be dispelled.
So Noah lightly shook his head, gathered himself, sat as comfortably as he could in that situation, and parted his lips.
"Why me?" Noah asked, his voice now holding a distinct note of seriousness mixed with overwhelming authority. "I am strong, I know. I am special, that too, I know well. But who or even what gave you the confidence to believe that I wouldn't go after the Horn like anyone else?"
His lips slowly pulled out, showing a cold smile.
"You would be a fool and more if you didn't consider that possibility, Primus. And I hate fools."
"I would be, indeed, wouldn't I." Primus nodded, then swept his hand around. Teacups and a jar - steaming out delicious nectar that blanketed the whole realm - appeared on the table.
Primus licked his lips, then continued.
"However, Prince, I have lived longer than you could imagine. Universes live long. And I am called Primus. Let me remind you, Prince, that names are heavy. Mine is heavy. Heavier than most, making beings like you possible to sprout inside."
He paused, lifted his eyes to stare at them, then smiled. "Now, don't get me wrong. I am not saying I am perfect, but there are mistakes I can no longer make."
He poured tea into two teacups and pushed them gently in front of Noah and Diatah. The two looked at them, then at each other, before taking hold of them.
It was hot yet cold.
"So tell me why." Noah said, giving a sip of the tea. His eyes
immediately went wide, surprised by the incredible taste flooding his insides.
Diatah was no less thrilled by that.
"I was not done yet, that was all." Primus replied, sipping his own tea. "Because I would have proposed to you something that would be much more fitting to your needs."
"Maybe my needs lie in the Horn."
"If your need is owning an old man on his last leg like me, flaunting it like a child owning a treasure, then it sure would be. But if your need is to be the One and Only..."
There, Noah paused, lifting his head high enough to look at Primus's smiling face.
"...then maybe, Prince, just maybe we can discuss more about it."
"The One and Only?" Noah echoed.
"You have obtained the right to be the Progenitor of Dragons and Elves. Quite frankly, Esmeray surprised me. A shame to see her in her current state."
"Don't overstep." Noah said with a warning tone.
Primus raised his hand in surrender. "Did I?" He chuckled before
continuing his words. "As I was saying, you became the Progenitor of
Dragons and Elves. An interesting position, but is that all your drive can shoulder?"
He bared his white mouth into a grin.
"Can't you see more than that, Prince?"
"I dislike meaningless words."
"I dislike impatient people, too. Am I complaining, Prince?"
Noah scowled.
Primus grinned then. "In other words, dear
what do you think
of becoming the only Progenitor of the Primus Universe? The Origin of all? The One and Only?"
Noah's heart was beating unceremoniously fast, his pulse quickening as the implications of Primus's words registered inside his mind.
At his side, Diatah now had a look of surprise and deep intrigue. She rested her eyes on the Will of the Universe, narrowed them
menacingly.
"Why would you?" She grated, prompting Noah's attention back to the current situation. "You are giving the core fragmented power of your universe to one single being. No matter how you put it, puppet, it isn't logical for one who wants to protect itself from internal betrayers." "Fair observation." Primus drawled. "But here are the things you failed to understand, Foreigner."
The Will pointed his slender, pale finger towards the sitting Noah.
"This lovely Prince here would not betray me once he accepts the deal. You see, people like him have an image to keep. They wouldn't
destroy it."
"Then you know me not, Primus."
"You were born within my expanse." Primus said, giving him a look. "So
I do, Noah Brandon. I do well."
Noah sneered.
The Will whirled his attention back to Diatah.
"And you see, Foreigner, the only way I can make him choose to protect me without joining the ranks of my hunters is to give him something at that level."
He smiled thinly, forcefully even. "So you see, Foreigner, I do not quite have a choice. This is the price I need to take to protect myself from
my different selves."
"A steep price, I say. One you will likely regret." She sneered. "Isn't it
pathetic?"
"Oh yes it certainly is. Weakness has this mad-touched tendency to make you wish reality would swallow you whole. Yet it never did.
Mother's above!"
"Only Power is the truth."
"A truth." Primus corrected gently. "It's only one truth among many
others. Not the one."
"But is there one?" Noah chimed in. "Is there in this universe, or in
this reality, or even in the whole scope of existential questions where stories unfold... is there One Ultimate Truth?"
That question made the world strangely freeze. It felt like Noah was pondering something mystical, something... fundamental.
The three of them found themselves in a strange atmosphere, where even Diatah's face was shadowed by a longing.
A deep, consuming longing that threatened to burst forth like restless
waves on a stormy night.
Only then did Noah finally glimpse into what Diatah was after.
"I can't answer that question in a large scope, but I can in my own
scope... in my own universe." Primus said, raising a finger upward. "There is no single truth in our universe. Not because we don't actually have one, but because we have lost it."
"Huh?" Both Noah and Diatah reacted, puzzled.
"The Truth is one, but we call it by many names." The Will whispered.
"All because we understood IT in different ways. And now after eons in that same, unending cycle, we lost the One Ultimate Truth, and are now confronted with truths."
Noah pulled in a deep, ragged breath, his own existence seeming to catch something incomprehensible in those words.
A part of him was shaking, urging him to seek more about this matter.
But the feeling disappeared as fast as it came, and Primus continued smoothly.
The Will looked at Diatah. "That's why for some, Truth is Power. While
others find Truth in something as simple as living in accordance with one's own soul distinction. And so on, and so on."
The couple parted their lips in perfect sync to speak what had been gnawing at their minds since the beginning of this strange discussion of Truth, yet Primus beat them to it.
"However, we are not here today for this discussion. I would be very
much pleased, I assure you, and even more willing to say more about it once..."
He smiled innocently, sweeping his eyes between Noah and Diatah.
"...once I have my mind free of burdened worries. You know already,
right? The tongue moves faster when nothing worries you. That's why fools can't stop their mouths."
His words made the couple scowl, staring at him with obvious
distaste.
"We can just attack you here, take your Horn, and force you to speak."
Diatah threatened shamelessly.
"I am the Will of a Universe." Primus replied, his voice suddenly tight.
"I have my own pride. And seeking - needing - help doesn't mean me discarding it. If you do attack, you will get nothing from me. Except, of course, lovely problems by being homeless in the current warring Reality. Ah, I would very much love to see that. Not you?"
"I don't like being threatened." Noah narrowed his eyes. "Guess we have a thing in common, finally." He took a sip of his tea, then slowly put it on the table with a soft clack. "Your answer, Prince!"
Noah answered with silence at first. He turned to look at Diatah, their eyes having much conversation in an intimate way.
The woman was not the least bit pleased about how easy it was for
him to understand her thoughts, and for her to understand his own. Yet, Diatah would lie if she said she didn't also enjoy that sensation.
But of course, that was something that would die within her. So, ignorant of Diatah's internal battle, Noah answered. "Ultimate Progenitor," he said, smiling faintly, "I like the name."
"And I like that you like it, Prince. I think we have a chance together. Friends maybe?" "Tempting, but no thanks."
"Rude. Partner then. Deal?"
Noah bared his teeth into a grin. "Deal."
