Chapter 60: The Strange Patient
Chapter 60: The Strange Patient
Early the next morning, just as Jiang Feng finished his morning workout, Zhao Wuxia informed him that Xia Dongxue had arrived. Jiang Feng nodded and asked Zhao Wuxia to have Xia Dongxue wait while he took a shower.
After all, he had killed Mr. Shen in the backyard the previous night. Though he had disposed of the body and cleaned up the scene, traces might still remain. Xia Dongxue was a police officer—her instincts were sharp, and he didn’t want her discovering his secret.
Xia Dongxue sipped her tea, her gaze flickering toward Zhao Wuxia as she asked softly, “Miss Zhao, do you usually take care of Jiang Feng like this?”
Zhao Wuxia paused, then smiled. “I’m busy with work and studies. I only come here when I have time.”
Xia Dongxue let out a thoughtful “Oh,” then said, “Mind if I look around?”
“Go ahead.” Zhao Wuxia nodded.
Xia Dongxue stood and wandered around. When she reached the bedroom door and saw the enormous bed inside, she recoiled several steps in shock, her face instantly flushing red.
Zhao Wuxia, who had been following her, also blushed at her reaction but didn’t offer an explanation. Though she and Jiang Feng weren’t that kind of relationship, the bed was undeniably suggestive. Explaining would only make things more awkward.
Xia Dongxue hadn’t expected the bed to be so large. She clicked her tongue inwardly, not daring to look further, afraid she might see something she shouldn’t.
After showering and changing, Jiang Feng emerged.
Zhao Wuxia immediately brought him breakfast.
As he ate casually, he asked, “Captain Xia, what brings you here so early?”
Xia Dongxue rolled her eyes, unsure if he was feigning ignorance or genuinely clueless. “That person you asked me to investigate—I found something.”
“Oh?” Jiang Feng frowned. “What’s his background?”
“The Li family calls him ‘Mr. Shen.’ He was hired to treat Li Yuanjue’s leg—seems like a doctor, but his exact origins are unclear.” She smirked. “Rumor has it Mr. Shen had already healed Li Yuanjue’s broken leg, but within days, it was broken again. How strange.”
As a police officer, she shouldn’t take pleasure in others’ misfortune, but Li Yuanjue was insufferable—pretentious despite being utterly mediocre. Her disdain slipped out naturally.
Jiang Feng remained silent. He had hoped for more substantial information, but Xia Dongxue only knew Mr. Shen was a doctor hired by the Li family—nothing else.
It seems the Qihuang Sect is highly secretive. Few must know of it. This reassured him somewhat. The fewer who knew, the safer he was.
He nodded. “Thanks for your efforts, Captain Xia.”
“It was nothing, just a small favor.” She hesitated. “By the way, why were you investigating Mr. Shen?”
“Just curiosity.” He couldn’t possibly tell her the truth.
Xia Dongxue didn’t press further. “Then, about what you promised me—when are you free?”
“We can go now.” After a moment’s thought, Jiang Feng agreed.
Xia Dongxue had acted swiftly for him, even if the results weren’t ideal. He wouldn’t go back on his word.
Her face brightened. “Great! I drove here. We can leave after you finish breakfast.”
*****
Xia Dongxue drove Jiang Feng to an upscale residential complex. Only after entering did she say, “Jiang Feng, the patient’s identity is… sensitive. If he lashes out later, please don’t take it personally.”
Jiang Feng smiled. “Who is this patient to you?”
After a pause, she admitted, “My grandfather. I’ve consulted many doctors over the years, but none could help. I had no choice but to ask you.”
Jiang Feng nodded. After parking, they took the elevator to the 15th floor. Xia Dongxue knocked, and a middle-aged maid answered, beaming at her. “Xiaoxue! You’re here! Come in!”
Noticing Jiang Feng, the maid blinked. “Oh? Is this your boyfriend? You should’ve told me you were bringing him! I’d have prepared more dishes!”
Xia Dongxue’s face flushed. “Aunt Lan, Jiang Feng isn’t my boyfriend! I brought him to treat Grandpa.”
“Your boyfriend’s a doctor? Even better! Makes things easier in the future!” Aunt Lan cheerfully ignored the first half of her sentence, grabbing Jiang Feng’s hand and pulling him inside.
Jiang Feng chuckled but didn’t correct her. After they sat, Aunt Lan served tea before heading upstairs to fetch the old man.
Xia Dongxue stole a glance at Jiang Feng, relieved he wasn’t upset by the misunderstanding. She stuck out her tongue sheepishly. “Jiang Feng, don’t mind Aunt Lan. She’s like a second mother to me—always nagging about me finding a boyfriend. And… I’ve never brought a man home before, so she just assumed…”
“It’s fine.” Jiang Feng smiled faintly.
His indifferent attitude irked her. Sure, she had a temper, but she was attractive. Couldn’t he at least pretend to mind being mistaken as her boyfriend? It felt like she was the one being taken advantage of!
Halfway through his tea, Jiang Feng heard footsteps descending the stairs. A tall, gaunt old man with liver-spotted skin and a face like dried orange peel walked down, his posture rigid as a spear, exuding an unspoken authority.
As Jiang Feng studied him, the old man scrutinized him in return, his expression cold. “Xiaoxue, stay for lunch today.”
Xia Dongxue nodded obediently, linking arms with him as they sat. “Grandpa, this is Jiang Feng.”
“Jiang Feng? Decent name.” The old man’s face darkened. “But the man himself? Unimpressive. Xiaoxue, he’s not good enough for you. Send him away.”
Xia Dongxue nearly laughed at the absurdity. “Grandpa, he’s not my boyfriend! He’s the doctor I brought to treat you!”
The old man remained impassive. “Someone so young can’t possibly treat anything. Don’t let yourself be fooled. Pay him and send him off.”
“But—”
“Leave!” The old man cut her off, glaring at Jiang Feng. “Unless you’re staying for lunch?”
Jiang Feng had been warned about the patient’s temper, but this was beyond expectation. He smirked. “Fine. I’ll take my leave.”
Xia Dongxue panicked. She’d gone to great lengths to bring him here—she couldn’t let him walk away! In her haste, she grabbed his arm, pressing against him. “Jiang Feng, you can’t go!”
Her soft warmth and delicate fragrance enveloped him, her chest pressing against his arm. Frowning, Jiang Feng was about to push her away when the old man bellowed, “Xiaoxue! Look at yourself! Have you no shame?”
Realizing her impropriety, Xia Dongxue scrambled to pull away—only to slip and collapse back into his arms, her eyes welling with tears.
Jiang Feng lifted her upright. “Captain Xia, I came as promised. But if I’m unwelcome, there’s no point staying. Find someone else.”
“But—”
Before she could protest, the old man roared again. “Stop! You’re not leaving!”
Jiang Feng’s patience wore thin. He wasn’t a doctor. Had it not been for their agreement, he wouldn’t have come. The patient’s fate meant nothing to him.
The old man might have been someone important in his prime, but that didn’t grant him the right to be rude.
“Oh?” Jiang Feng sneered. “You’ll force me to stay?”
The old man glared. “I’ve changed my mind. Examine me now.”
Xia Dongxue was baffled. Why the sudden shift?
Jiang Feng only smiled. “No. I’ve decided to leave.”
“You—!” The old man’s beard quivered with rage.
Ignoring him, Jiang Feng turned to leave—when a sudden gust of wind shot toward his back. Without looking, Jiang Feng threw a backward punch.
Crack!
The two fists collided. Jiang Feng stood firm, while the old man staggered, nearly collapsing onto the sofa, his face flushed.
“Grandpa! What are you doing? Why would you attack him?” Xia Dongxue cried, rushing to steady him.
The old man ignored her, his sharp eyes locked on Jiang Feng. “Who are you? What’s your purpose here? Speak, or I’ll kill you!”
A pistol appeared in his hand, aimed at Jiang Feng.
Jiang Feng turned slowly, his gaze icy as it settled on the gun. “Lower your weapon. Or I won’t be polite.”
“Bold words for someone at gunpoint!” the old man snapped. “Think I won’t shoot?”
“If you’re eager to die, pull the trigger.” Jiang Feng’s tone was indifferent. Their earlier exchange had revealed the old man’s vitality—he wasn’t terminally ill. But his strength was negligible to Jiang Feng, who could kill him before the trigger was pulled.
“Hah! The youth today have no fear!” The old man’s finger tensed.
“Grandpa, NO!” Xia Dongxue screamed, clinging to his arm. “Jiang Feng, I’m so sorry! I’ll apologize properly another time—just go, please!”
Once Jiang Feng left, she snatched the gun away, furious. “Grandpa! Even if you dislike him, you can’t point a gun at him! What if it went off? He was here to help you, not as your prisoner!”
The old man scowled. “Didn’t you hear what he said? Xiaoxue, you can’t just bring strangers here! Do you even know who he is?”
She sighed. “Grandpa, I may not know him well, but he’s from the Jiang family—not one of your old enemies.”
“Jiang family?” The old man froze, recalling her introduction. “You’re not lying?”
“Check for yourself if you don’t believe me!”
The old man fell silent. Earlier, Jiang Feng had lifted Xia Dongxue effortlessly—a move requiring not just strength but skill. That alone had raised his suspicions.
He’d planned to eliminate Jiang Feng if necessary. But if he truly was a Jiang…
After a long pause, the old man sighed. “Xiaoxue… I’m getting old. Useless. But my biggest worry is you and your parents. What will you do when I’m gone?”
Xia Dongxue’s face paled, tears glistening in her eyes.
