Chapter 848: Confession - final
Chapter 848: Confession – final
Olivia’s eyes remained on his face.
“Then what are you asking of me?” she said. “Because a confession without a path forward is only another burden.”
Julian held her gaze.
“I am asking whether there is any version of this that does not end in ruin,” he said. “Can we not find a way to love without harming the others who stand around us? Without destroying Father. Without destroying the life you have.”
Olivia stared at him. Love without harm. The idea sounded almost gentle when spoken aloud, yet both of them knew how dangerous the reality would be.
Secrecy.
Careful timing.
The constant risk that a single mistake could unravel everything.
She pushed away from the cabinet and took a single step closer to him. The movement made the damp robe cling more tightly for a moment before it settled again.
“You speak as if it is possible to separate these things cleanly,” she said. “As if we could build a private corner of the world where the rest of our duties simply do not exist. I have lived long enough to know that secrets grow… until they become large enough to break”
“I know,” Julian answered. “I am not claiming it would be simple.”
Olivia’s hands had lowered to her sides. The earlier defensive grip on her robe had loosened, though she had not opened it.
“You are asking me to consider a life of careful lies,” she said quietly.
“I am asking you to consider whether the truth we already share is worth protecting,” he replied. “Even if protection means silence.”
The wardrobe held the silence that followed. Somewhere beyond the locked door the larger chambers continued their ordinary existence. The castle beyond those walls continued its evening rhythm.
Inside, however, the only reality that mattered was the two of them and the confession that still sat unresolved between their bodies.
Olivia looked up at him fully. The conflict had not left her eyes, but it had shifted into something more open.
“And if I said yes?” she asked. “If I said we could try to love without harming the others… what would that mean tomorrow? What would it mean the next time you come to these rooms? What would it mean when Elara’s betrothal moves forward?”
Julian did not look away.
“Mother, you are only asking questions,” he said. His voice remained low, but there was a quiet sharpness beneath it. “Questions keep piling up if you let them. One leads to another, and another after that, until the weight of them feels heavier than the truth itself. The thing that matters most is not every possible future complication. The thing that matters is whether you can commit or not.”
He paused, watching the small shifts in Olivia’s expression as she listened.
“You have not rejected me,” he continued. “You could have said no. You could have ordered me to leave the moment I spoke. Instead you brought me here, locked the door, and stood in front of me trying to make sense of this situation. That choice already says more than any argument.”
Olivia’s breathing had grown thinner. She held his gaze for a moment longer, then faltered when he spoke again.
“Tell me, Mother… you love me as well, right?”
The question landed too close to the center of everything she had been trying to keep contained. Color rose hard across her cheeks. She turned her face away, toward one of the tall mirrors, as if the reflected version of him might be easier to face than the living one standing in front of her.
Julian watched the reaction without pressing closer yet.
“I saw you when the Count and Elara came to the duchy,” he said. “You were sad, were you not? Seeing me with her. Standing there while everyone spoke of betrothal and alliances and the future. You smiled when it was required. You played the role of the composed Duchess. But I know what I saw.”
Olivia’s hands had curled into the fabric at her sides. She did not deny it. The silence itself became an answer.
“The time we spent in our sessions,” Julian went on, quieter now. “The intimacy we faced. The way your body responded when the circuit formed. The way you trembled and still allowed the current to continue. You felt it the same way I did. You are addicted, right? Not only to the strength it gave you. To the closeness itself.”
She did not answer.
Or rather, she could not.
He had struck exactly where the heat was most concentrated. Every private exchange they had shared… rose between them again: the reluctant first contacts, the deepening connection, and the hunger that had arrived together.
The memory of those moments lived in her body as much as in her mind. To admit the addiction aloud would be to surrender the final piece of distance she had tried to maintain. To deny it would be a lie too thin to stand in the present silence.
Julian’s voice softened further. The earlier edge of sharpness left it, replaced by something lower and more open.
“You know just as much as I do, Mother. If we want… we can make this love real. You do not have to keep hiding from yourself. We already crossed the first boundaries. The only question left is whether we continue to call it a series of mistakes, or whether we finally stop pretending that it means nothing.”
Olivia closed her eyes for a brief moment, allowing the weight of his words to settle over her. Everything he said was true. She could no longer deny it, not even to herself.
Somewhere along the way, her feelings for him had changed. She had developed an affection for Kraven… her own son. She had also grown used to their sessions. Over the past few days, she had found herself yearning for that closeness… wondering when she would see him again.
And then there was Elara.
She was jealous of her.
