Chapter 1352: Waiting for Gains without Pains
Chapter 1352: Waiting for Gains without Pains
Hearing the Chief Captain's inquiry, Xu Rong, who already had her suspicions, felt the clues in her mind finally snap together. She blurted out her thoughts on the spot.
"Chief Captain."
"Just as you said, these Phantom Spirits died extremely gruesome deaths. They were definitely finished off with extra strikes, like some sort of revenge. The entity that did this must possess overwhelming strength, making it impossible for us to track them down easily."
"However, I did find one common thread!"
The Chief Captain showed appreciation in his eyes and nodded expectantly.
"Oh?"
"What common thread did you find? Tell me about it!"
Xu Rong nodded with even more certainty, her tone becoming much steadier.
"The several incidents where the Phantom Spirits were slaughtered on a massive scale, as well as the previous beast horde incident, all took place outside the city walls. They also all occurred at night. The time and location are consistent without exception. We can treat these two points as crucial factors to narrow down our search radius!"
Li Weiwei listened, feeling a bit confused.
The Chief Captain, however, smiled even more deeply. He pushed up his glasses and nodded in agreement.
"Yes, excellent."
"As long as we send people to monitor the movements outside the city, we might just discover the traces of this terrifying entity. This is indeed a viable method."
"Hurry and check if there are any other traces of Phantom Spirit activity around our Pingjiang City."
Xu Rong immediately sent out a message, and before long, she responded with excitement.
"Chief Captain, it's been confirmed. A large number of Phantom Spirits were once spotted by the Qing River north of the city. That is the only place left where no corpses have been found yet. It should be the next target of that terrifying entity!"
Hearing this, Li Weiwei finally understood.
"Oh!"
"I get it now! The Captain means that if we follow the established pattern and go to the next location to lie in wait, we'll be able to find out exactly what terrifying entity is taking action!"
The Chief Captain smiled faintly.
Xu Rong made a prompt decision, speaking up as if eager to redeem her past mistakes.
"Chief Captain."
"This time, I want to personally go to the Qing River in the north. I will hide nearby and keep a close watch. Perhaps I can find out exactly what kind of entity is behind this!"
Seeing such a valiant and heroic request for battle, the Chief Captain nodded solemnly.
"Alright. Be careful in everything you do."
If it were anyone else, he would absolutely not agree to such a dangerous mission, even if they were just monitoring from afar using technology. But Xu Rong was their most formidable captain. She should have no problem protecting herself while observing. Furthermore, the recent string of failures had left this proud genius feeling suffocated and frustrated; she needed to achieve some sort of merit no matter what.
Both emotionally and rationally.
For this heavy responsibility, Xu Rong was the one and only candidate.
The Chief Captain had long seen through everything; knowing his subordinates and using them well was the greatest wisdom.
Seeing the Captain entrusted with such a heavy task, Li Weiwei's eyes filled with nervous anticipation. She made a firm promise to cheer her Captain on.
"Captain, please be careful."
"I'll wait for your good news! Don't worry about anything else. I will definitely keep a close eye on that weird man!"
The group looked at each other and smiled, looks of excitement surfacing in their eyes.
The convoy sped away, heading straight into the brightly lit downtown area of Pingjiang City.
At dusk the next day.
In an old residential complex, Li Weiwei, wearing a trench coat, hid under a tree. She monitored every movement in the apartment building, her eyes fully concentrated the entire time, never relaxing for a single moment.
This time.
She had rallied one hundred and twenty percent of her spirit, swearing to expose the true colors of that despicable fraud, Wu Tao. As a dignified member of the Demon Hunting Department, she wagered all her pride; she would never allow herself to be deceived again!
As a civilian intelligence officer, she wasn't exactly skilled in combat, but she was quite confident in her surveillance and tracking abilities. Moreover, with the aid of technology, how could there possibly be another mistake?
Even if the target was a Phantom or even a powerful Spirit Hunter, she had the confidence to monitor all of his movements. Even if she had to go without food or drink for an entire day, she was going to watch this guy like a hawk!
Meanwhile.
As the night gradually fell.
On the high walls outside the northern part of the city, Xu Rong nervously held her binoculars, keeping a close watch on the Qing River.
Although she had been very persistent, due to the Chief Captain's orders out of safety concerns, she could only monitor the activities by the Qing River from a distance atop the city walls. This kind of distant observation completely went against Xu Rong's original intention, but she had no other choice.
Even though a few team members had been ordered to come as reinforcements to help with the surveillance, setting up several observation points along the dozens of miles of the east-west city wall, Xu Rong still wore a hint of anxiety on her face. She kept her eyes glued to the distant Qing River, not daring to relax in the slightest.
However, a person's energy is ultimately limited.
After several hours of intense focus, even an outstanding talent like Xu Rong would feel fatigued, let alone when concentrating entirely on a single spot.
Suddenly.
She felt her eyelids growing heavier and heavier, and a trace of dizziness hit her head.
But in the brief moment she put down the binoculars to blink, the walkie-talkie at her waist suddenly blared with an urgent report!
"Captain!"
"Captain, look quickly! There's movement by the Qing River!"
Hearing the voice, Xu Rong was startled and hurriedly picked up her binoculars.
As she zoomed in, she saw what appeared to be a silhouette dashing across the banks of the Qing River. Mists of blood erupted under the moonlight. In just a few breaths of time, the Phantom Spirits that had been startled into appearing were slaughtered like livestock!
It was too terrifying...
Even just watching from afar, this scene was truly far too horrifying!
Even though Xu Rong was a veteran of a hundred battles, she was so shocked that she swallowed hard involuntarily. But her pride and sense of responsibility surged forth in an instant, allowing her to overcome the fear in her heart and continue staring intently into the distance.
Unfortunately.
The distance was simply too great, and the moonlight was somewhat dim.
No matter how carefully she looked, she could not make out the true face of that rapidly advancing silhouette. Seeing that the Phantom Spirits were almost entirely wiped out, that figure would likely leave soon!
What should she do!
If she continued to just watch from a distance like this, she would gain absolutely nothing. This hard-won opportunity would end up being a complete waste of effort!
The more she watched, the more anxious she became.
Disregarding everything else, Xu Rong made a split-second decision and leaped down from the city wall.
This absolutely terrified the other team members!
Not far ahead was a terrifying entity capable of slaughtering Phantom Spirits. Approaching so recklessly was simply too dangerous!
After all, even though that person was slaughtering the Phantom Spirits, it was impossible to tell if they were friend or foe.
Steeling themselves, a few team members also jumped down from the wall one after another to stop her.
A flurry of persuasion and interception took up a few breaths of time.
Given how decisive and capable Xu Rong was, and with her usual authority deeply ingrained in their hearts, the team members couldn't possibly stop her. However, it still wasted a significant amount of time.
By the time she finally sprinted silently closer.
The banks of the Qing River were already littered with corpses. The gruesome sight of the bodies having been mercilessly finished off, just like before, made everyone's hearts pound with terror!
Xu Rong, however, felt even more regretful, gritting her teeth and stomping her foot in frustration!
"Damn it!"
"I'm still a step too late! I couldn't even get a clear look at what kind of creature made the move!"
Hearing her voice, the team members lowered their heads in guilt.
Xu Rong, however, ignored them. She abruptly raised her eyes and searched everywhere. Using her binoculars, she anxiously scanned the moonlit surroundings, still hoping to find traces of that terrifying creature.
Seeing her persistent demeanor, the team members felt even more regretful and ashamed.
Fortunately, hard work pays off for those who set their minds to it.
Even though that terrifying creature was incredibly mysterious, Xu Rong still managed to spot its trail.
On the distant horizon illuminated by the moonlight...
A lone figure walked steadily into the distance, appearing exceptionally eerie against the serene moonlight. In the wake of tonight's clan-exterminating massacre, witnessing such a scene would send chills down anyone's spine.
Without a doubt, this was the mastermind!
However, when Xu Rong rallied her spirits and locked onto the target.
The figure actually looked completely unremarkable, resembling nothing more than the back of an ordinary human male!
In an instant.
Xu Rong's heart skipped a beat in shock, a sense of disbelief washing over her.
She hastily adjusted her binoculars for a closer look. It was undeniably a man wearing slippers and shorts, strolling leisurely and acting as lazily as if nothing had happened. Even though she could only see his silhouette, the longer she looked, the more familiar he seemed.
Suddenly.
Xu Rong's clear eyes trembled violently, and she lowered the binoculars with a look of pure astonishment.
"It's him?!"
