Chapter 1075, A Copy-and-Paste Standard of Training

Gang Guo stood in the crowd, thoroughly lost. His eyes swept across the surrounding area without stopping.

He had gone completely still. He did not know what to do, or how to react.

The reason: more than anything else, was the Flame Dragon Tribe. What this Tribe had done to him was simply too much to absorb.

Where he stood now could be considered the heart of the Flame Dragon Tribe. No matter which way Gang Guo turned or glanced back, cement houses filled his view.

The cement houses were staggering. There were so many of them, packed closely together, and they rose to heights that seemed impossible to fathom, like hills but living quarters.

Even those Totem Warriors who stood two or three metres tall, stacked one on top of another several times over, might not match those houses.

And that was just from the outside. When he saw someone on the second floor, he understood for the first time that one of these cement houses could hold many people.

He had initially assumed they were built so tall simply to look imposing and feel safe. He had not expected people to live both above and below, and in such numbers. It rewrote everything he thought he knew.

Even a Large Tribe could not manage this. They had no way to build wooden houses so high, because it was not safe. A strong gust of wind, or the rainy season, and the whole thing would come down.

So, their houses were always short and low, and the number of people who could live in them was limited.

It was not only the houses that struck him. The road beneath his feet struck him just as hard.

He thought immediately of the road through his own Tribe, and the word that came to mind was chaos. It was all muddy and dirty.

When it was dry, weeds grew wherever they pleased, and nobody in the Tribe thought to clear them or tend to the road. When the rainy season came, the whole path turned to mud. One would sink with every step, as though it were a bog.

Of course, for people of a Primitive Tribe, this was nothing surprising. They were accustomed to sleeping under the open sky.

But having arrived at the Flame Dragon Tribe, the ideas they had always taken for granted were completely changed.

Gang Guo felt at once that a road worth walking on was a fine thing. It was comfortable and easy underfoot. He had also seen animals pulling strange wooden frames along the road, as fast as he would be if he ran.

Setting aside what was inside those wooden frames, the fact that the animals obeyed so willingly was already astonishing enough.

Nothing he had gathered about the Flame Dragon Tribe had mentioned anyone there knowing how to Tame wild beasts, so seeing those beasts behave so docilely came as a real shock.

And then there were the wooden frames themselves. Large and sturdy, lashed securely to the animals, and moving along the smooth road without the slightest jolt.

But what truly dropped Gang Guo’s jaw was that people were sitting on top of those frames, looking entirely at ease.

Anyone who was not a fool could see that this was how the Flame Dragon Tribe got around.

And that was just the cement houses and the road. The Flame Dragon Central Market and the food street were something else again.

Gang Guo had known only that the Flame Dragon Tribe had a Market. That was the news Bo and Luc had brought back to the Dark Scorpion Tribe.

But the food street was something he had never anticipated. He had assumed a Tribe’s food would be simple and monotonous. The Flame Dragon Tribe’s food was anything but that.

‘Abundant’ did not begin to cover it. There were so many varieties that choosing felt impossible. He could spend all day looking and still not see everything. More than ninety percent of the food there was something he had never even laid eyes on before, let alone tasted.

The methods of preparation were entirely new to him. The flavours, when he tried them, were astonishing.

There was a pull to it that made one want to stay. Gang Guo had felt it keenly.

If Sha Hong had not ordered him away with that stern look of hers, he suspected he would have planted himself there and eaten without stopping.

Everything he ate was paid for by Sha Hong. The reason was simple enough: he was a captive, so he had no money.

The money Sha Hong spent would be reimbursed by Su Bai, so there was no cause to worry about the cost.

Beyond the food street, there was of course the Central Market, now well known across many Tribes.

So many goods in circulation had come from the Flame Dragon Tribe’s Central Market.

The wine he had drunk back in the Dark Scorpion Tribe, the food he had eaten there, all of it had come from the Flame Dragon Tribe.

And there was more. He had noticed that some people in the Flame Dragon Tribe were already wearing linen.

The Flame Dragon Tribe had once been seized by the Black Snake Tribe. Their strength had fallen considerably since then. A Tribe that had been occupied like that was bound to live worse than others. Even in the Dark Scorpion Tribe, not everyone could afford linen.

Only those of higher standing could wear it. Most people still wore Animal Hide.

But the Flame Dragon Tribe was different. Looking around, two or three people out of every twenty were dressed in linen. It was not a surprising ratio, but it was already remarkable considering their circumstances.

Beyond all of this, there was one thing that left Gang Guo struck utterly speechless.

The Warriors of the Flame Dragon Tribe looked, each and every one, thoroughly trained. All of them seemed immaculate.

When the Totem Warriors went on patrol, their footsteps were something to see. Every step, every foot lifted and placed, was as though it had been copied from the same person and pasted into twenty bodies.

Gang Guo could not look away. And he could not help but respect what he was seeing.

He also felt, in that moment, that his own defeat had been entirely natural. How could anyone win against a Tribe trained like this.

He had wanted to see the training grounds where the Flame Dragon Tribe practised with those strange weapons of theirs. But that was not to be.

The training ground was kept private. Only Warriors and soldiers were permitted inside.

Even members of the Flame Dragon Tribe themselves could not enter freely, let alone someone from another Tribe.

This was deliberately done. It was too soon to expose what lay at the core of the Flame Dragon Tribe.

“I never imagined the Flame Dragon Tribe to be like this,” Gang Guo murmured without thinking. “Our Tribe never had a chance.”

He shut his mouth the moment the words were out and looked around carefully.

He wanted to see whether anyone had caught what he had just said. It was the truth, but it was not something he felt he should be saying in front of another Tribe’s people.

Though unwilling to say it aloud, that was not the same as disagreeing. He agreed completely. He simply found it embarrassing to admit.

Gang Guo was sharp and observant. He knew the Flame Dragon Tribe still held many secrets he had not even begun to uncover.
