I Died and Became a Noble's Heir

Chapter 595: Floor 9 - Altar of the King Part III

Chapter 595: Floor 9 - Altar of the King Part III

"You transform into a seven-foot-tall monster with WINGS and CLAWS and HORNS. You’ve consumed demon hearts to fuel that power. You’ve slaughtered entire bloodlines. And you’re STILL pretending like you’re the good guy making tough choices!"

It released Jack’s throat to backhand him across the face with enough force to snap his head sideways.

"You’re not making tough choices! You’re not some reluctant hero forced into violence! You ENJOY it! The killing, the power, the fear in your enemies’ eyes when they realize they can’t win! Stop pretending otherwise!"

{He’s being very confrontational! Also, possibly correct! But mainly confrontational!}

Jack ripped his weapon hand free, Oscar’s blade scoring across the shadow’s ribs as he created separation.

Purple-and-black ichor sprayed across cracked obsidian.

The shadow laughed, ignoring the wound as it conjured another spear to replace the one Jack’s strike had disrupted.

"THERE! That’s what I want to see! AGGRESSION instead of a calculated response! You’re a demon, Jack! Act like it! Stop measuring every action against some morals that doesn’t even apply to you anymore!"

Jack’s breathing was controlled, his mind processing the shadow’s words even as he rejected them. "I’m not..."

"You’re not WHAT? Human?" The shadow’s grin was manic. "You died as a human! You drowned in the Sea of Deaths for CENTURIES! You came back as something else with human memories! The Jack Kaiser from Earth DIED in that truck! You’re just what crawled out of the storm!"

{Philosophically interesting! Existentially disturbing! Probably not the best time for an identity crisis, though!}

"Shut UP, Oscar!" Jack and the shadow spoke simultaneously, their voices overlapping perfectly.

{Fine! FINE! I’ll be quiet! Just sitting here in silence, contemplating my lonely existence while you two work out your psychological issues!}

The shadow lunged again, and this time Jack met the charge directly.

Oscar clashed against the purple-and-black spear, both weapons moving through forms that mirrored each other perfectly.

Thrust, parry, riposte, sash, block, and counter.

The two fighters moved in synchronization, each anticipating the other’s attacks because they WERE each other.

"You maimed Thorne and are keeping him as a toy without even thinking twice about it," the shadow stated between strikes.

"That’s not even a SOLDIER’S response! That’s a demon doing what demons do!"

"He deserved..."

"They ALL deserved it in your mind!" the shadow interrupted, its spear nearly taking Jack’s eye before he deflected. "Everyone you’ve killed, you’ve justified! But you know what? You don’t NEED justification! You’re STRONG! You have POWER! You can take what you want, kill who you want, reshape the world however you WANT!"

Jack’s grip on Oscar tightened. "That’s not..."

"That’s not what HEROES do?" The shadow’s laugh was bitter. "You’re not a HERO, Jack! You never WERE! You’re a demon wearing a hero’s mask because it’s easier than admitting what you actually enjoy!"

{I hate to interrupt the deep psychological exploration, but there are approximately twelve Static Orbs still floating above us that haven’t been triggered yet. Might want to address those.}

Jack’s awareness snapped to the golden spheres still hovering overhead, their electrical charge waiting for activation command.

The shadow noticed his distraction and grinned wider.

"See? STILL thinking tactically and STILL measuring variables! Just FIGHT me! Forget the setup, forget the field control, forget the LEASH..."

It lunged mid-sentence, the attack coming faster than Jack could fully process. The purple-and-black spear drove toward his heart, and Jack barely managed to deflect the thrust with Oscar’s shaft.

But the shadow had anticipated the deflection. Its free hand was already moving, gathering corrupted lightning for point-blank discharge.

{Oh, that’s clever! Feint with the spear, ttack with the magic! Your shadow fights DIRTY!}

Jack triggered the Static Orbs, all twelve spheres detonating simultaneously in overlapping fields of golden electricity.

The explosions rocked the chamber.

The shadow used Abyssal Step, blinking through the blast radius to reappear in Jack’s guard.

Its fist drove into Jack’s sternum, and the impact sent him sliding backward across fractured obsidian.

[HP: 143,776/151,775]

{Okay, that one actually hurt! I felt that through our connection! How hard did he HIT you?!}

"Hard enough," Jack gasped, his constitution already working to repair the damage.

The shadow didn’t press the advantage immediately.

"You want to know the REAL reason you’re holding back?" the shadow asked, its tone shifting from mocking to something almost earnest.

"It’s not morality. It’s not even the leash Malakai built."

It pointed at Jack with its spear.

"You’re AFRAID. Afraid that if you actually embrace what you are, what you’ve BECOME, you’ll lose whatever remaining connection you have to the person you used to be. You’re terrified that Jack Kaiser from Earth will disappear completely, leaving just the demon wearing his name."

{...That’s profound. Did not expect that level of self-awareness from a magical construct.}

Jack’s jaw clenched, and Oscar gripped so tightly the metal groaned under the pressure.

"I’m not afraid."

"PROVE IT!" the shadow roared, purple-and-black mana erupting across its form. "Stop THINKING! Stop MEASURING! Just FIGHT me like the demon you ARE!"

Then its form began changing, mana hemorrhaging from every pore as it activated Infernal Conversion.

The technique sacrificed magical capability entirely, converting invested mana into raw physical enhancement.

The shadow’s muscles expanded, definition becoming grotesque as its frame packed on mass that violated its body.

Its spear dissolved, the conjured weapon unable to maintain cohesion when magic crashed to zero.

But its physical capabilities had become monstrous.

{Oh. Oh no. That’s... that’s a LOT of strength. I’m calculating approximately eleven hundred in raw power output. You can’t match that without...}

"I know," Jack interrupted, his own hands already moving.

He dismissed Oscar back to dimensional storage. The curse would damage him for the next part, and he needed every advantage.

{WAIT! We were going to discuss my situation! The solution you mentioned! The possibility of PHYSICAL INTERACTION!}

"After the fight."

{You keep SAYING that, but what if you DIE?! Then I’m stuck as a lonely spear FOREVER!}

"Then I won’t die."

{That’s not... Oh, forget it. Just try not to get obliterated. I have standards about which corpses I’m found next to.}

Jack reached inward, consciousness touching the Demonic Essence accumulated from consuming demon hearts.

The power responded immediately, flooding through his system as he triggered the transformation.

Golden light erupted across his skin, blazing so bright it cast harsh shadows across the chamber’s curved walls. His frame began expanding, bones lengthening while muscle mass increased to fill the growing structure.

Wings burst from his back, leathery membranes unfurling with force that scattered debris.

His spine extended, tail growing to counterbalance his shifting center of gravity. Horns erupted from his skull, curved bone sweeping back along his head.

His skin darkened to black scales, armored plating covering every inch of exposed flesh.

His face restructured, jaw extending while teeth sharpened into fangs.

His eyes bled to complete crimson, the yellow-orange consumed by transformation.

[Height: 7’4"]

The shadow grinned up at him, muscles still grotesquely swollen from Infernal Conversion.

"THERE you are," it stated, satisfaction bleeding through the words. "The REAL Jack Kaiser. Not the tactical genius. Not the reluctant hero. Just a demon ready to RIP and TEAR until nothing’s left standing."

The shadow’s fist drove toward Jack’s chest with enough force to level the dungeon.
