I Died and Became a Noble's Heir

Chapter 687: War Time Protocols

Chapter 687: War Time Protocols

"Not remove," Sariel corrected gently. "Redirect. Jack Kaiser is a Chosen One of substantial power. He possesses the capability to handle threats that would overwhelm conventional military forces. More importantly, Faye Vesper has bound herself to him, a top-tier divine warrior blessed by Zephyros himself. Between his power and her divine standing, he possesses more than sufficient capability to address the threat he has attracted."

Fauna’s breathing had become shallow. Her voluptuous chest rose and fell with increasing intensity as she processed what was being suggested.

"You’re proposing we send him out into the wilderness alone," she said quietly. "To face an army of creatures he attracted without any support from the kingdom’s military."

"I am proposing," Sariel replied, "that we apply a logical strategy to the situation. Caeloria’s defense infrastructure is finite. Our military resources are limited. Dispersing our forces across the borderlands to support Jack Kaiser would weaken our capital’s defenses and leave the kingdom vulnerable to secondary threats. It is tactically indefensible."

"However," Sariel continued, moving slowly as he spoke, his ancient eyes commanding absolute attention, "Jack Kaiser carries within him the power necessary to address the crisis he created. And he is publicly bound to a Chosen One whose divine backing provides auxiliary support that no mortal kingdom could match. Sending him into the wilderness is not a sentence of execution. It is the most logical application of an overpowered asset to neutralize the very threat he caused."

Gale’s jaw had clenched hard enough that his teeth were grinding audibly. His massive frame radiated the kind of tension that came from a warrior recognizing strategic necessity even as every instinct rebelled against it.

"The palace will interpret this as betrayal," Gale said flatly. "Jack Kaiser has been treated as an honored guest. Faye Vesper has publicly claimed him as her destined partner. Sending him out alone will be viewed as abandonment by the very kingdom that welcomed him."

"Only if the narrative is framed carelessly," Sariel replied with perfect equanimity. "But if the wartime protocols are activated, if King Maelor assumes absolute authority as the kingdom enters a state of crisis, then the decree can be framed as a strategic deployment of assets necessary to preserve the kingdom’s survival. Jack Kaiser will be presented as the kingdom’s shield against apocalyptic threat, not as abandoned prey. His sacrifice becomes his honor."

Myrine’s eyes had taken on that distant quality she got when she was thinking too much. She was already calculating political implications multiple moves in advance.

"We would need to present this to King Maelor immediately," she said. "Before the alarms sound, before the kingdom’s panic becomes uncontrollable. If we frame it correctly, if we present it as a unified Council assessment of the tactical situation, he may be persuaded that wartime protocols are necessary."

"The defense coordinators will not support this," Fauna said quietly, her voice carrying the weight of political reality. "They will argue for a conventional military response. They will demand that we mobilize forces to defend the borders."

"The defense coordinators answer to the Council," Sariel replied with absolute certainty. "And the Council presents unified recommendations to the King. If the three of you speak with one voice, the coordinators will follow. The military structure requires them to."

Gale’s massive shoulders dropped slightly, a gesture that communicated surrender to necessity rather than agreement with strategy.

"We move to the throne room," he said, his voice rough with the weight of what he was accepting. "We present this to Maelor before the situation escalates further."

The three Council members turned as one, moving toward the throne room’s corridor. Sariel followed behind them, his serene expression never wavering, his ancient eyes reflecting the amber light filtering through the palace windows as he grinned maniacally.

------

The throne room was a cathedral of power, designed to emphasize the Crown’s absolute authority.

King Maelor stood near the throne rather than sitting upon it; his posture was relaxed despite all the reports he was reviewing when the three Council members entered, with Sariel following behind.

The King’s features were sharp and aristocratic, bearing the weight of centuries of elven lineage. His silver hair was bound in intricate braids that marked his status and authority.

His eyes, when they met the approaching Council members, carried the particular wariness of a ruler who recognized when significant developments were about to be delivered.

Queen Morvana occupied a seat on her throne with her legs crossed when they approached. Her white silk gown was threaded with silver, and her perfect composure never wavered as she observed the Council members’ approach. Her green eyes held no warmth when their gaze met.

The three daughters stood nearby, their positions arranged with the careful precision that marked high-status nobles. Miravelle’s silver-blonde hair caught the light. Elysanthe’s elaborate braids framed her perfect features. Rosethiel maintained a serene expression, as if accustomed to observing court politics without participating directly.

"Council members," King Maelor acknowledged, his voice carrying the measured formality required by the throne room’s protocols. "You arrive with some urgency. What requires this level of attention?"

Myrine approached the dais with measured steps, her silver hair reflecting the light from the scrying mirrors. Behind her, Fauna and Gale flanked her presence, creating a unified front of Council authority.

"Your Majesty," Myrine began, her voice carrying the clipped precision of someone presenting a strategic analysis, "the kingdom’s defense coordinators have brought concerning reports regarding organized movement at our eastern borders. Creatures are gathering with unprecedented coordination. The pattern suggests a convergence rather than dispersed territorial incursion."

King Maelor’s expression shifted. His hand moved to his chin; his mind was already processing the strategic implications.

"Scale?" he asked gently.

"Substantial," Myrine replied without hedging. "Large enough that conventional military response would require significant resource dispersal from the capital’s defenses."

The Queen’s posture stiffened fractionally. Miravelle’s expression shifted toward concern. Elysanthe’s hands clasped together, fingers interlacing with sudden tension.

"Cause?" the King asked, his gaze moving from Myrine to encompass the entire assembled Council.

"We have identified the source," Gale said, his massive frame radiating the kind of certainty that came from a warrior stating tactical reality. "The creatures are converging on a specific target within the capital. Their behavior patterns indicate they are drawn by draconic essence signatures. Jack Kaiser carries integrated dragon essence within his body. His presence has become a beacon that attracts apex predators from across the territories."

The silence that followed was profound. The throne room’s vast emptiness seemed to compress around the implications.

"You’re stating with certainty," King Maelor said slowly, "that the gathering at our borders is a direct result of Jack Kaiser’s presence in this capital."

"I am stating with certainty," Sariel replied, his voice emerging with the weight of absolute authority despite his position as the most recently arrived among the Council members. "The magical resonance patterns are unmistakable. This is not random territorial aggression. This is convergence on a specific target."

The King’s hand dropped from his chin. His jaw clenched. A gesture that showed even the ruler of Caeloria processed information physically, with the same manifestations as ordinary mortals.

"What do you recommend?" Maelor asked as he waited for a response.
