I Died and Became a Noble's Heir

Chapter 772: Rewards and Questions Part II

Chapter 772: Rewards and Questions Part II

But more immediately pressing than the mystery of the Herald was the realization that his power had acted without his permission.

His subconscious had activated the Chain of the Soul Warden.

The system’s statement confirmed that much. His will had asserted dominion over dragon souls without his conscious participation, awareness, or ability to control what was happening.

But the question that terrified him most was the one that spiraled outward with exponential implications, branching into nightmare scenarios that multiplied endlessly.

If his power had activated while he was unconscious, what would stop it from activating while he was awake?

The thought made his skin crawl. What if he were sitting across from King Maelor, discussing the aftermath, and his subconscious suddenly decided to assert dominion over the King without warning?

What if he was talking with Faye and his power decided she belonged in his collection, that her soul should be grafted into his network without her consent or awareness, without any possibility of resistance?

His will was not entirely his own. His power was not entirely under his control.

There was something within him that operated independently, made decisions without consulting him, and could activate and expand his dominion whenever it felt compelled to do so.

More terrifying still, had his power already bound people without his knowledge?

The question crystallized in his mind with sickening possibility. What if there were dozens or hundreds of souls grafted into his network that he had no awareness of?

What if people he cared about, people who trusted him, people who had placed their faith in him, had already been stripped of their free will without him even knowing it had happened? And the system wasn’t updating the count correctly?

Jack’s hand moved to his chest, feeling his heart hammering beneath his ribs. His pulse was racing, his breathing shallow and rapid. Panic was beginning to gain the upper hand over his rational mind.

To take his mind off things, Jack decided to look at his stats to see what had changed.

The interface materialized with clean precision.

———-

Jack’s eyes scanned across the statistics methodically, processing each line with analytical precision even as his mind reeled from the cascading implications.

But it was the notation at the very bottom that drew his focus, that held it with the weight of an unsolved puzzle.

His Demonic Essence read: 4,692/???

The question mark instead of a numerical value meant the maximum was unknown to him, concealed behind some kind of system restriction.

How high could this stat climb? What did Demonic Essence represent? A reflection of his bloodline’s resonance with the Shattered King?

The first notification appeared in stark letters, completely unadorned by the golden luminescence that typically marked reward notifications.

[WARNING: Host bloodline has achieved synchronization with Primordial Entity Ophion]

But before Jack could fully process that revelation, a second notification materialized in bright red letters.

[!!!: The primordial seal on your soul has weakened. [Seal of the Demon has fractured!]]

The words echoed through Jack’s consciousness with reverberating force, penetrating layers of his being that he hadn’t known existed.

A seal on his soul.

Something fundamental that had been holding back an aspect of his nature had fractured. The Seal of the Demon, a restraint that had been placed on his soul by forces he did not know of, by entities that predated his existence.

Something that had been keeping certain capabilities, knowledge, and power locked away from his conscious awareness.

And now it was starting to break.

Jack’s mind spiraled through the implications with escalating terror.

What power had been sealed away? What aspects of his nature had been suppressed? What knowledge had been locked behind this restraint?

And most importantly… What would happen as the fracture continued to spread? What would be unleashed when the seal was finally shattered completely?

His thoughts were interrupted by a third notification materializing in front of his eyes.

[Dreknar, The Black Flame, wishes to see you!]

The notification was simple and stark, but the name carried a glimmer of hope.

The Demon God.

The entity that had given Jack through multiple quests and granted him access to powerful abilities in return.

Each task Dreknar had given him had drawn Jack closer to earning the god’s favor, closer to receiving a blessing that would alter his power levels.

But this summons felt different from previous communications. There was urgency embedded in it, a weight that suggested the timing was critical.

Dreknar didn’t typically summon Jack at all. Yet this notification showed Dreknar was eagerly awaiting his arrival.

Jack’s gaze returned to the warning notification about his bloodline’s synchronization with Ophion. The primordial seal is fracturing. His soul resonated with one of the most ancient and powerful entities ever to exist. And now Dreknar was calling.

The connections formed in his mind, like pieces of a puzzle, clicked into place with terrible clarity.

The seal fracture. The synchronization with Ophion. The Madness State had pushed his consciousness beyond normal parameters. His subconscious will binding thousands of dragons without his awareness or consent. The missing Herald. The vanished lieutenants. Dreknar’s urgent summons.

They were all connected. They were all part of some larger progression, some design that was moving Jack inexorably toward something massive.

Jack closed his eyes, allowing the weight of the notifications to settle into his consciousness.

The cascade of revelations was accelerating. The quiet of his recovery was ending. Something fundamental was shifting in ways he didn’t yet understand.

Jack opened his eyes and stared at the wall before him, processing the full weight of what the notifications represented.

His power operated without his conscious control. His will asserted dominion over souls without his knowledge or permission. His bloodline was resonating with forces older than civilization itself.

A seal placed on his soul was breaking apart, releasing power and knowledge he had no idea he possessed. And he had no way of knowing when his subconscious would activate next, no way of predicting what his will might do the next time he closed his eyes.

He was losing control.

Or perhaps he had never truly had it at all.

And somewhere in the depths of the tower, removed from his reach, beyond his ability to track or reclaim, the Herald remained. Taken by his own forces as a gift to him. But he was just asking the wrong people the wrong questions.

Jack lay back on the bed, his mind churning through implications, possibilities, and terrors that seemed to multiply with each passing moment.

The notifications remained visible to him. The answers they represented were locked away, accessible only if he dared to seek them out.
