Chapter 782: Striking a bargain
Chapter 782: Striking a bargain
He stepped forward slowly, and the motion seemed to cost him every ounce of remaining strength, every reserve he had left after the emotional devastation of confrontation.
“That is what I came here for,” Maelor continued, his voice carrying the raw honesty of someone who had stripped away every defense and stood naked before judgment.
“Not for power. Not for control of the Council. Not for the glamour of royal authority or the satisfaction of political victory. I came here to keep my children safe. Everything else is secondary to that.
Everything else is negotiable. Everything else can be sacrificed if necessary. But their safety is not. Their lives are not. I will not make that calculation again, and I will do whatever is necessary to ensure that never happens.”
Jack stared at Maelor for a long moment.
“Then we have an understanding,” Jack said.
Maelor nodded once, a motion sharp and definitive, and in that single gesture was contained the entirety of what would come next.
Jack stepped back from Maelor, creating distance where there had been none.
The motion was a reassertion of space and hierarchy.
He moved to the window again, positioning himself against the afternoon light so his face was partially shadowed, partially illuminated.
“Now,” Jack said, his voice carrying the particular tone of someone who had obtained what they needed and was moving forward with business that could no longer be delayed, “we discuss the specifics of how this will actually work.”
Maelor remained where he stood, his breathing still somewhat elevated, his composure rebuilt though visibly fragile, like a glass that had been shattered and hastily glued back together.
He watched Jack with the particular intensity of someone who had just realized they had surrendered control of their own fate and was now attempting to understand the scope of that surrender.
Jack turned to face him, and when he spoke, each word landed with precision, each syllable calculated for maximum clarity.
“You will grant me access to every prison in this kingdom,” Jack said, presenting this not as a request but as a statement of fact.
“Every prisoner held in your custody, regardless of their crime or status. Every cell, every holding area, every confined individual throughout every structure where you hold people against their will. That is phase one.”
Jack paused, allowing the weight of the demand to settle.
“Once I have assessed what exists, once I have determined the scope and scale of what you possess, we move forward with the remainder.”
Maelor’s pale blue eyes flickered with understanding. The question was forming behind his expression.
Jack could see it working through the elf’s mind, but the king held it back.
Maelor was learning that interrogation came after clarification, not during it. He remained silent, waiting for Jack to continue.
Jack moved deeper into the chamber, each step echoing slightly against the stone floor. The shadows seemed to follow him, pooling at his feet, deepening the further he walked from the windows.
“Phase two involves the creation of a military force,” Jack said, and something shifted in his tone. The words became more measured, as if he were describing something that required absolute clarity.
“You will establish a military unit. These soldiers will answer only to you. Not to anyone else in your command structure. They become your personal enforcement mechanism, capable of executing orders across your kingdom without delay, hesitation, or questioning.”
He stopped at the center of the chamber, turning to face Maelor directly.
“I will transform elves into your military force,” Jack continued, and the words fell into the chamber like stones into still water.
“Elves drawn from your kingdom, transformed at a level that goes beyond mere training or physical enhancement. I will remake them into soldiers capable of functioning with absolute precision, with unwavering loyalty to your will alone.
They will be something more than ordinary soldiers. Something more than what conventional training can produce.”
Maelor’s jaw tightened. His hand moved to his side, fingers curling into a fist, then relaxing. The motion was small, but it conveyed everything.
Recognition of the implications, understanding that Jack was offering something that transcended normal military organization.
“How many?” Maelor asked quietly, his voice steady despite the calculation occurring behind his pale eyes.
“As many as you can provide,” Jack said flatly. “I will take elves from your dungeons, and create from the resources available to you a military force that functions as an extension of your will. They will be incapable of betrayal and disobedience.”
The air in the chamber seemed to grow colder at those words.
The implications were staggering. Jack was not simply offering military training; he was offering to fundamentally alter elves at some level he wouldn’t disclose.
“What does transformation entail?” Maelor asked, and there was something in his voice that suggested he understood he might not like the answer, but needed to ask anyway.
“That is not your concern,” Jack said without inflection. “You provide me with elves. I handle the remainder. The result is a military unit that answers only to you. That is all you need to comprehend.”
Maelor’s shoulders drew back. His breathing adjusted slightly, becoming more controlled.
He was accepting this, Jack recognized. Accepting that there were aspects of this arrangement that would remain unexplained, accepting that his role was to cooperate rather than to fully comprehend.
“Phase three addresses your Council directly,” Jack said, moving to the table and resting his hand against its edge.
“You will identify replacements for the Council members I remove. You will choose individuals who understand what needs to be accomplished, who are capable of making difficult decisions without flinching, and who possess the political acumen necessary to navigate court dynamics without faltering. When you have them, I will have them sign contracts to bid them to your male bloodline.”
“What criteria determine suitability?” Maelor asked, his voice carrying the weight of someone attempting to maintain control over at least some portion of the process.
“That is your decision to make,” Jack said, his tone dropping into something colder. “If they meet the standard required, they advance. If they do not, you select others and continue until the selections satisfy my requirements. This is not negotiable. Your Council exists at my sufferance now, whether the current members comprehend that reality or not. They will understand this once I begin removing the ones who cannot be trusted.”
Jack retrieved a thin leather portfolio from where it rested against the chair. He opened it slowly, allowing Maelor to see the pages within.
“These replacements will sign a binding agreement,” Jack said, opening the portfolio to reveal pages written in silver ink that seemed to glow faintly in the afternoon light.
The script was elegant and precise, each letter perfectly formed, readable yet somehow carrying weight that transcended mere written words.
Power radiated from the parchment itself.
Old power, binding power, the kind of force that made promises permanent in ways that normal law could never achieve.
“An accord that ensures their absolute loyalty to you and your male bloodline in perpetuity. They will understand precisely what they are committing to when they sign. The consequences of betrayal are outlined with complete clarity.”
Maelor stepped forward, drawn to the pages despite obvious reluctance.
His pale blue eyes scanned the text, and though he could read the silver script, the meaning seemed to shift slightly depending on the angle from which he viewed it.
The words were there, but they were arranged in patterns.
Layers of binding and commitment that went deeper than surface comprehension.
“What binding is this?” Maelor asked slowly, his voice carrying the caution of someone who suddenly recognized the magnitude of what was being presented. “The ink, this is not ordinary.”
