I Died and Became a Noble's Heir

Chapter 791: Semifinals Begin!

Chapter 791: Semifinals Begin!

The Grand Stadium’s atmosphere had crystallized into something heavier than before. The preliminary rounds had eliminated the weaker competitors. The Quarterfinals had demonstrated who possessed legitimate capability. The Semifinals would reveal who meant to be great in this world.

Millions watched through scrying mirrors across the seven kingdoms and numerous trading posts.

The announcer’s voice emerged from the ley-line amplifiers, carrying the particular cadence of someone introducing contests of genuine magnitude.

“Eight champions remain. Four will advance to the Finals. The Semifinals commence.”

He paused, allowing the weight to settle.

“Match One: Seed #1, Rhys, faces Seed #13, Soren Anake. Match Two: Seed #2, Sylvia Asher, faces Seed #7, Anya Castian. Match Three: Seed #11, Bastian Fireheart, faces Seed #9, Cedric Castian. Match Four: Seed #5, Miriame Malakor, faces Seed #14, Cyrus Ouroboros. The Semifinals begin.”

Caspian Alyon sat rigidly in the observation section. His fingers were interlaced in his lap, pressed together with such force that his knuckles had become completely bloodless. His jaw was clenched so tightly that a vein pulsed visibly at his temple.

Leandros sat beside him, his ancient elven features carved from ice, his expression revealing nothing. But his eyes tracked every movement with the precision of someone assessing capability.

Tymandra occupied a seat three rows back, her dark eyes fixed on the arena below, her posture relaxed, revealing her confidence.

“Your daughter advances confidently through the tournament,” Tymandra said, her voice pitched to carry only to Leandros. “Miriame’s positioning is sound. Her magical coordination is methodical. She will likely face significant challenges if she progresses.”

Leandros did not turn to acknowledge Tymandra’s observation, but his shoulders drew back slightly.

“My daughter’s advancement is assured,” he replied, his tone carrying the weight of absolute certainty. “The question is whether your son possesses sufficient capability to present a legitimate challenge.”

“Cyrus will advance,” Tymandra said, her lips curving upward in a smile that contained genuine confidence. “My family’s bloodline does not produce mediocrity. He has earned his position through legitimate victory.”

“Neither does mine,” Leandros responded, his voice dropping into something colder. “But bloodline means nothing when positioned against superior training. That is what determines outcome at this level.”

Tymandra’s smile widened. “We shall see.”

————-

The barrier flared to life.

Rhys descended into the arena. His movements were economical, controlled, carrying the weight of purpose rather than performance.

Soren entered from the opposite preparation chamber. He moved with methodical precision, his earth magic radiating from his core, grounding him, stabilizing his position.

The barrier solidified around them.

“Begin!”

Soren attacked immediately, his strategy transparent and methodical. His earth magic erupted, fracturing the arena floor in patterns designed to disrupt approaching footwork. Jagged formations rose like teeth, creating barriers between them, establishing controlled distance.

Rhys responded by channeling wind magic into his legs, propelling himself upward and forward simultaneously. His body warped through the air, accelerating through invisible currents of his own creation, his trajectory calculated to bypass every earthen obstacle Soren had constructed.

He emerged directly above Soren’s position.

His lightning dagger descended in a vertical slash aimed at Soren’s left shoulder.

Soren’s earth magic erupted in response, forming a protective barrier that intercepted the blade. The impact generated a shock wave that rippled across the arena floor, further fracturing the marble surface.

But Rhys was already repositioning. His second dagger moved in a horizontal arc while Soren was still processing the first assault. The blade connected with Soren’s ribs, and lightning erupted directly into his body.

Soren’s nervous system seized. His muscles contracted involuntarily. His body convulsed as an electrical current surged through him.

He collapsed to one knee, his breathing becoming shallow and labored.

Rhys did not pause. He pressed forward with methodical precision, his daggers moving in combinations that offered no recovery opportunity.

Each attack was delivered from an angle Soren had not anticipated. Each defense was rendered obsolete before it fully manifested.

Rhys’s wind magic coordinated with his lightning daggers, allowing him to reposition at will, attacking from vectors that should have been impossible to reach.

Soren attempted to counter. His earth magic tried to create barriers, establish control, and restrict Rhys’s movement.

But Rhys had already calculated the trajectory of every possible defense. His positioning was absolute. His timing was perfect.

His lightning dagger found Soren’s center mass, and the full force of his electrical payload drove through the competitor’s body.

Soren’s scream echoed across the stadium. His body arched backward, seized by the intensity of the electrical discharge. His consciousness fractured under the trauma.

He collapsed backward onto the arena floor, completely motionless.

The match had consumed ninety-eight seconds.

Rhys stood exactly where he had been standing before the match commenced. His breathing was unchanged. His posture was perfect. His expression revealed nothing.

The crowd erupted into applause, but their energy carried no surprise. They had expected this outcome. Rhys had delivered it just like his earlier victories.

————–

In the observation section, Caspian’s hand contracted involuntarily. His nails dug deeper into his palms, reopening the wounds that had been forming for days.

He understood completely. Rhys was executing strategies that assumed absolute superiority and proceeded accordingly.

He was, in fact, his father’s son.

Leandros’s expression did not shift, but his assessment was absolute. He had just witnessed mana conservation, optimal positioning, and devastating effect delivery in a timeframe when his competitor was operating at approximately 30% of his own power.

The barrier dissolved. Healers rushed into the arena to attend to Soren’s unconsciousness and electrical trauma.

The announcer’s voice redirected attention toward Match Two.

Sylvia executed her descent with remarkable grace. Her movements were characterized by a precision that bordered on a complete absence of superfluous gestures. Her attire remained impeccably pristine, and her posture was maintained with unwavering perfection.

Anya entered with the composed confidence she had developed through the tournament. Her magical coordination was solid. Her positioning was sound. Her breathing was controlled and measured.

The barrier flared.

“Seed #2, Sylvia Asher, versus Seed #7, Anya Castian. Begin!”

Anya attacked first, her wind and water magic coordinating into combinations designed to establish offensive pressure.

Her water magic formed into concussive waves that rushed toward Sylvia’s position. Her wind magic accelerated those waves, magnifying their force, driving them forward with relentless momentum.

Sylvia responded with defensive elegance. Her water magic rose to meet Anya’s assault, creating barriers that intercepted the waves. Her positioning shifted with minimal movement, allowing her to redirect incoming force rather than oppose it directly.

The match developed into a genuine pattern of offense meeting defense.

Anya’s assault continued, her magic coordinating into increasingly complex combinations. Her water magic formed into spiraling patterns that twisted around Sylvia’s barriers. Her wind magic created vertical shears designed to slice through defensive frameworks.

Sylvia’s defensive measures were executed with remarkable precision. Each barrier was re-established precisely as its predecessor failed, and every repositioning was strategically calculated to optimize the defensive posture.

But Sylvia’s defense was not merely reactive. It was a framework designed to transition into a counterattack at the precise moment when Anya committed fully to her assault.

That moment arrived on Anya’s seventh coordinated strike.

Sylvia’s barriers collapsed forward with purpose. Her defensive framework inverted, transforming from passive obstruction into active assault. Her water magic cascaded across the arena floor, creating currents that disrupted Anya’s footwork, tugging at her legs and destabilizing her balance.

Her wind magic accelerated those currents, transforming them into a horizontal spiral that began to rotate around Anya like a cage.
