Part 3

And so, the members of the Shadow Society began executing their plans.

The Cat-Masked Man was currently attempting to summon a shadow from another world, while the Crow-Masked Man was verifying the summoning technique. Both had stayed back at the Shadow Society’s headquarters.

Then, the Crow-Masked Man spoke up.

“By the way, what kind of entity is this shadow we’re summoning this time?”

“Well… To be honest, all I know is that it’s more powerful than the monster we originally planned to summon.”

“Hm. Even if it’s only level two in mutation terms, monsters aren’t weak by any means. An entity that easily surpasses that while existing as a formless shadow… I can’t even begin to imagine what might be summoned.”

“We don’t have the technology to cross to that world yet, so we can’t confirm it. But perhaps there are powerful monsters evolved from the ones we’ve seen so far. Or maybe there are fierce warriors whose livelihood is defeating those monsters.”

“Hm? So, you’re saying there’s a possibility that we could summon a human shadow from that other world?”

The cat-faced man nodded at the crow-faced man’s words.

“Yes. Whether intelligent life in another world takes human form like us is unknown, but it wouldn’t be strange if such beings existed. It’s akin to the relationship between demons and onmyōji in our world.”

[T/N: They were practitioners of onmyōdō, an ancient Japanese esoteric system combining elements of natural science, astrology, divination, and magic. This system was heavily influenced by Chinese yin-yang (陰陽) philosophy and the five elements (五行, gogyo) theory.]

“I see.”

The Crow-Masked Man was convinced by the Cat-Masked Man’s explanation.

Then, the Crow-Masked Man suddenly remembered something and asked,

“Speaking of which, you said that we must constantly channel power into the summoning circle when summoning a shadow. Do we know how much power that consumes?”

“We won’t know for sure until we try it, but you probably don’t need to worry too much about that. Summoning the shadow itself will likely consume the most power. Maintaining the summoned state shouldn’t require nearly as much.”

“I see. In any case, if the summoning is successful and we decide to utilize the shadows from the other world, it seems we’ll need several people to activate the summoning magic.”

“Yes, for now, we can only hope the experiment succeeds.”

Thus, the two began moving forward with their plans as they discussed these matters.

“How was it?”

“Oh, Father!”

It was the day she invited Yuuya to visit the New Year’s shrine.

When Kaori returned home, Tsukasa asked her about it. She nodded happily.

“Yuuya-san said he’d like to join in on the first shrine visit!”

“I see. That’s wonderful.”

After all, it was Tsukasa who suggested that Kaori go to the first shrine visit with friends.

“You’ve finally made a wonderful friend, Kaori. Spending the New Year with friends is fun, after all.”

“Yes! But I was just about to call the others besides Yuuya-san to discuss it…”

“I see. Anyway, it’s a great opportunity. Be careful and have fun.”

Hearing this, Kaori nodded happily.
