Part 4

When Lexia and the others were enjoying their sightseeing.

“It failed?”

In a dark, damp space where the breath of something huge echoes.

The man repeats in a low voice, and his subordinate, kneeling down, hangs his head deeply.

“Yes. It was just one second away, but the newly-arrived attendants stopped us.”

“No way… I went to the trouble of asking the Dark Guild for help. Unless they are very skilled guards, there is no way they could have prevented it. Who the hell are these attendants…?”

The man who groaned in disgust at the news of the failed assassination attempt on Laila received even more startling news.

“In addition, there is no sign of Laila-sama. It seems that she went sightseeing with the attendants in question…”

“…Sightseeing, you say…?”

The man’s eyes widened in disbelief.

“You mean she went sightseeing while her life was being targeted?”

“Yes… in a situation where the public was unusually watchful and untouchable…”

“Damn you, you ignorant little girl, you’ve been acting selfishly! With the crowd, it’s impossible to touch her…! Don’t tell me she’s got a brilliant planner on her side…?”

The man looked up, his clenched fists creaking.

At the tip of the sharp gaze. There was a huge shadow, sleeping as if blending into the darkness.

“If the first prince marries the Regal princess, the royal family’s power base will be strengthened, and my power will diminish. Moreover, if the existence of this thing were to be discovered before the plan was put into effect, it would be in danger of being crushed by the magical technology of the Regal Kingdom. That little girl is a hindrance to the fulfillment of my ambitions…! We must awaken this thing as soon as possible…!”

As if in response to the man’s impatience, the thing, trapped in a deep sleep, writhes.

A low, heavy moan reverberated through the void.

“Hyii…!”

“I-it moved…?”

The men around him backed away, and one of his aides whispered to the frightened man.

“J-just in case, please put on the brooch I showed you. Without it, you are in danger…”

“Hmm? ──Oh, yes, that’s right.”

The man took out a brooch with a scorpion’s crest engraved on it and put it on his chest.

A wicked smile appeared on his lips.

His snake-like eyes looked up at the huge black shadow lying on the altar.

“…Well, that’s alright. Once the seal is removed, neither the authority of the king nor the magical powers are to be feared. We will continue with our plan. The world will soon be in my hands… kukuku, gigigigi…”

A crooked laugh escapes from his distorted mouth.

There was an old flute in his hand.

“Ha, that was fun!”

By the time Lexia and the others returned to the royal palace after their sightseeing tour, the sun was setting. This time, since Laila was with them, they were able to officially enter through the castle gate. The gatekeeper was surprised to see Laila dressed in the traditional costume of the Sahar Kingdom but let her through right away.

“This way, everyone.”

Laila led Lexia and the others to her living quarters. Laila, the fiancée of the first prince, was allotted an entire large plot of land.

At that moment, a man came from the end of the corridor.

“Oya, Laila-sama!”

He was a man in his prime age, dressed in clothes that were instantly recognizable as high quality and sporting a thick black beard. His thick black cloak floated in the midst of the magnificent furnishings.

“Who is he?”

“His Excellency Najum, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Sahar.”

Laila whispered to Lexia, who asked in a whisper.

The man──Najum──glanced at Laila with cold eyes.

“When I visited you, you were not present, so I wondered where you had gone, but you seem to go sightseeing quite carefree. You are a very important person who is going to be the crown princess of the Kingdom of Sahar. Please do not do anything improper.”

“Yes. I apologize──”

“It’s an inspection tour.”

Lexia interrupted Laila as she was about to bow solemnly.

“Hey!”

Before Luna had time to stop her, Lexia resolutely looked up at the prime minister.

“Laila-sama went on an inspection tour. As His Excellency Najum said, Laila-sama is going to be the crown princess of the Kingdom of Sahar. Therefore, she wanted to see the country with her own eyes, learn about the culture, and get to know the people.”

“…Laila-sama, who are these people?”

“Oh… they are…”

Instead of Laila, who was at a loss for words, Luna responded as quickly as she could.

“We are maids from the Regal Kingdom.”

“Maids?”

“T-that’s right. They are taking care of my personal needs.”

When Laila spoke to him, Najum looked at her with a grim look in his eyes.

“…It is fine for you to play around with your followers, but please be sure to maintain moderation in your speech and behavior so as not to embarrass yourself as the future crown princess. There will be an evening party in the near future to introduce you. Please do not neglect your preparations.”

Najum then flipped his cloak and walked away.

Laila exhaled and looked back at Lexia and the others.

“Thank you, you’ve been very helpful.”

“I apologize; I assumed on the spur of the moment that we were maids.”

Luna and Lexia bowed their heads.

“I’m sorry, too, for being so impolite! I was so upset when he said that to Laila-sama…”

“It’s fine. I’m so glad you covered for me.”

Lexia looked at Laila, smiled at her, and stared in the direction the prime minister had left. But still, the prime minister didn’t seem to be very nice earlier. He was very overbearing towards Laila-sama, and it was rude.

Lexia puffed her cheeks out, but she noticed that Tito was staring at the end of the hallway where the prime minister had gone.

“Tito, what’s wrong?”

“That presence… N-no, it’s nothing.”

“Really?”

Lexia wondered, but she quickly switched sides and clasped her hands together.

“But being a maid is a good thing. Now we can be by Laila-sama’s side without worry!”

“Um, I’m glad you feel that way, but I don’t want to get you all into this mess anymore…”

Lexia’s momentum pushed her to enjoy the sightseeing, but Laila tried to be resolute, remembering the situation where she was being targeted by assassins.

But Lexia shook her head, shaking her pale blonde hair.

“It’s okay. I can’t leave you alone. I told you, didn’t I? I don’t like it when Laila-sama isn’t happy.”

“…Thank you very much.”

Lexia puffed out her chest as she smiled at Laila, who bowed her head.

“Well then, I guess we know what we have to do tomorrow! We’ll pose as maids and prepare for the assassin’s attack while unraveling the conspiracy swirling beneath the surface!”

“Yes!”

“Certainly, a maid is perfect for protecting one’s person. But Lexia, housekeeping skills are essential to being a maid. Are you sure you can handle it?”

“Oh no, I’ll manage with my spirit!”

Luna let out a sigh as she realized the beginning of a tumultuous period.

***

Upon their return to the palace, Laila showed them around the many rooms to which they had been addressed.

As they were provided for the prince’s fiancée, all the rooms were spacious and furnished with the finest quality furnishings.

“Wow, amazing, they’re gorgeous…!”

“Fortunately, there are many rooms available in this plot, and they are all equipped with kitchens and baths. You can use any room you like and have a good night’s sleep tonight. Now then, good night──”

“What are you talking about?”

“Eh?”

Lexia said to Laila, who was standing there in a daze as if it were obvious.

“Of course, we’re going to sleep together.”

“Eh? T-together?”

“Yes, together. It’s natural.”

“Hah. Lexia, don’t annoy Laila-sama too much.”

Luna held her forehead, and Laila tilted her head in confusion.

“But… I’m fine with it, but I’m afraid you all won’t be able to get a good night’s rest, will you?”

“Because you never know when you might be attacked, right? We’re Laila-sama’s bodyguards right now. We’ll be by your side even when you go to bed.”

“You just want to enjoy the sleepover, don’t you?”

“That’s part of it!”

“Y-you do…”

“It’s fine. Come on, let’s go into the room!”

Lexia pushes Laila and the others into the room with no questions asked.

“I’m so excited to sleep with you all! It’s the best part of the journey!”

“I thought you just wanted to have fun…?”

“Fufu. I’ve never done this before. It’s very fresh.”

After changing into their nightclothes, they dive into the bed.

The canopy bed is large enough for four people to lie down on.

“Woah, amazing, the beds are so soft…!”

“Tomorrow is going to be busy too; let’s go to bed early, Lexia──ubu.”

A pillow hit Luna’s face just as she was about to say that.

Lexia put her hands on her hips and smiled sneeringly.

“Fufufu, you’re so naive, Luna! You should never let your guard down at any time! So, Laila-sama, let’s train to protect ourselves in case of an attack──Nmm!”

Halfway through her words, Luna throws a pillow, which hits Lexia in the face.

“Puhh! What are you doing!”

“Hah, training is just a pretext; you just wanted to throw a pillow. …But, okay. If that’s what you intend to do, I’ll take it──[Puppet]!”

Luna manipulated the strings, and pillows and cushions floated softly.

One after another, they attacked Lexia with loud noises.

“Ah, it’s not fair to use strings!”

“Hmph. This is part of my ability.”

“Lu-Luna-sama, is that the kind of skill that can be used for a pillow fight?”

“Mumumu! Tito, fight back!”

“Huh? Y-yes!? Uh, [Whirlwind Claw]!”

Tito crossed her arms and swung out, and a tremendous tornado was generated, sending the pillow soaring.

“Wha…?”

“There’s a tornado in the room──!?”

Lexia and the others clung to their beds as a gust of wind swirled around them.

When the pillows were about to hit Luna with a whirring roar, Luna’s figure disappeared.

“Wha──!?”

“This way! [Spiral]!”

“Whoa!”

Luna unleashed a string in the form of a drill. As the pillow is released, it is shot out in a whirling motion.

Tito fell down, and the pillow that had been snatched above her head hit the wall and exploded with a loud bang! The pillow exploded.

“Aaah! The pillow! Luna, you’ve gone too far!”

“What kind of power is that?”

“Fu, fufu, as expected of Luna-san! But I won’t lose to you… on the name of the disciple of the Claw Saint!”

“Is that a title you can put on a pillow fight?”

“Toouu!”

It seems that Tito’s fighting spirit was ignited by Luna’s technique.

Tito leaped up to the canopy and swung the pillow up to gather strength. The pillow glowed brightly.

“The pillow glowed──!?”

“What kind of reasoning is that?”

“This is the end! ──[Thundering Claw]!”

Just before Tito was about to throw the pillow down at Luna.

“You got me! [Boisterous Dance]!”

Countless pillows, which had been in the air for some time, rushed toward Tito at once.

“Hyiiaaa?”

Tito fell onto the bed, and the bed bounced.

“Ugh, you did it, Luna-san!”

“You too, Tito!”

The pillow flies with supernatural skill at great speed, tearing the bedding and sending the feathers flying.

“T-this can’t be called a pillow fight anymore. What are you looking at?”

“We can’t afford to lose, Laila-sama! Let’s go in! Eeii!”

“No, we can’t!”

Lexia also boldly joined the fight, and the bed became a big battle of dancing pillows.

“E-everyone, that’s enough…!”

As Laila tried to stop her, Lexia’s pillow hit Laila in the face with a thud.

“Oh.”

“……”

In the awkward air, Laila slowly picked up the pillow that had fallen into her hand.

“Hah… good grief, everyone. Staying up late is the enemy of your skin… Yoi!”

“Nnghhhh!”

Lexia rolled over in bed, taking the pillow that Laila threw to her head.

Lexia was so happy that she held up the pillow as Laila laughed.

“You did it, didn’t you?”

“Phew, that’s splendid, Laila-sama!”

“We can’t lose either!”

With bright laughter, cushions, pillows, and comforters were flying in the air.

And so the girls’ first night together continued.
