Chapter 5 – Awakening
Part 1
“This is the Abyssal Forest…”
Tito gulped as she looked into the depths of the deep forest.
The group had followed the trail of the prince groups and stood at the entrance to the Abyssal Forest.
The forest was dark and dense, and an ominous scream echoed from somewhere.
“The second trial is to make a ‘secret elixir of immortality’ in this forest, but… we don’t know the key ingredients or how to make it.”
“If only I could use the dragon power, I’m sure some clues will appear on the scroll…”
“It’s okay; we can make it look like that if we just boil some grass and mushrooms here.”
“Never do that. And throw away those creepy nuts.”
“But then again, if there really was a secret elixir of immortality, I’m sure a lot of countries would want it so badly they’d be at each other’s throats…”
As Tito wondered, there have been many rich and powerful people throughout history who have sought immortality, but there is no record of anyone ever achieving it.
Lexia pointed triumphantly to the far end of the forest.
“Anyway, we can’t just sit here! The prince and the others may know how to do it, so let’s find out what they’re up to first!”
***
Following the presence of the prince’s group, they entered the forest, looking for any materials that looked like that.
Lexia suddenly noticed a tree nearby.
“This branch has an interesting shape. Maybe it’s made of a special material…?”
When Lexia stretched out her hand, the branch twitched.
It immediately took the shape of a lizard, bared its fangs, and jumped at Lexia.
“Gishaaaaaah!
“Kyaaa!”
“Fetters!”
Luna turns and releases her strings.
The tough strings wrap around the lizard and twist it off.
“Gyagya, gya…”
“That was a Shadow Lizard.”
“It was imitating a tree…!”
Just as they were relieved, countless beings appeared in the surrounding area.
“Grrrrrrrrr…”
From behind the trees, countless eyes glowed eerily.
The four of them were surrounded by a pack of wolf-like monsters.
“O-oh… when did they get so many…!”
“It seems that this forest has become a home for monsters…!”
“Yes. And with such murderous intent, they must be starving.”
“What should we do, such a large pack… and with such an overabundance of monsters, there will be damage to neighboring villages in the near future…!”
The adventurers killed the overgrown monsters, and the Holy would thin the herd periodically, but it seemed that the forest was too deep and poorly maintained.
Then Lexia opened her mouth cheerfully.
“Just in time; let’s get rid of them while we’re at it!”
“Huh? We’re going to kill this many monsters…?”
“Don’t worry, we’ll get rid of them in no time.”
“Yeah, it’s good practice!”
“Guoooooooo!”
The four of them were confronted by a swarm of monsters that let out a terrifying roar.
“Prison!”
“Claw-Piercing Bullet!”
“Gugaaaaahhh!”
Each time Luna and Tito used their skills, the mighty monsters were defeated.
Xiaolin’s chest rumbled with excitement as she watched the scene unfold.
“B-both of them are amazing…! I have to do my best as well…!”
She readied her twin swords and faced the enemy in front of her.
“Grrrrrrrrr… Gugaaahh!”
“Eii!”
At the same time as the wolf lunged at her, Xiaolin kicked the ground.
The wolf ran past her, and then she drew her sword.
“Guooooooooo…!”
The wolf’s head was cut off, and it died.
Without having time to see it, Xiaolin ran towards the monster further back.
“Yaaaah!
“Gruaaaaaaaah!”
The monsters fell one by one before her well-honed swordsmanship.
“Amazing, Xiaolin-sama! You are killing such strong monsters one after the other!”
“I knew you had good swordsmanship, but I didn’t expect you to be this good.”
“It’s so cool to see you control the twin swords so well!”
Xiaolin continued to fight hard, and the wolf pack was wiped out by the efforts of the four of them.
“Hah, hah, we did it…!”
Xiaolin wiped the sweat from her brow as she gasped for breath.
As she fought like crazy, she found herself far away from Lexia and the others.
“It’s no good; I have to get back quickly…!”
Just as she was about to rush back, there was a loud roar.
“Guooooooooo!”
“!?”
A sky-breaking roar rose right next to Xiaolin.
Luna, who had noticed it from afar, let out a startled scream.
“Bloody Bear!”
“Gaaaahhhh!”
The giant bear raised its thick arm.
Xiaolin quickly prepared herself, but she was exhausted from repeated battles, and her sword was instantly swatted away.
“Kyaa…!”
“Guooooooooo!”
The Bloody Bear raised its arm towards Xiaolin, who had lost her sword.
“Kyaaaahhh!”
“Xiaolin-san!”
Just as Luna and Tito are about to rush in.
“──Destruction Magic!”
Boom… boom!
A black sphere flew into the air and exploded, blowing away the Bloody Bear.
“Goaa, aa, aa…”
“Wha!?”
“Th-that was… magic…!”
“I’ve never seen magic with such ridiculous power! Who in the world is…!”
After the mighty monster was vanquished without a trace.
“My goodness, I thought it was noisy… why are there people in such a dangerous place?”
A man with long hair appeared with a humming sound.
The man looked at Lexia and the others who had rushed to Xiaolin and scrutinized them.
“Hmm? You people…”
“”O…Odis-sama!””
Lexia and Luna’s voices turned inside out at the unexpected reunion with someone unexpected.
Tito looks at them in confusion.
“Huh? Huh? Is he your acquaintance, Lexia-san, Luna-san?”
“Y-yes.”
“Odis-sama is the Magic Saint who has mastered the pinnacle of magic!”
“”E-eeehhhhhhh!””
“Stop making noise!”
Tito and Xiaolin exclamations caused Odis, the Magic Saint, to let out an annoyed voice.
The green eyes behind the glasses were filled with sharp and boundless wisdom, and the long, pointed ears characteristic of elves peeked out from the long blond hair.
His eyebrows were furrowed, giving her a somber look.
“I thought I’d seen your face somewhere before, but it turns out that you are an acquaintance of Usagi’s disciple. Why are you here…?”
Xiaolin bowed her head to Odis, who looked doubtful.
“U-u-uh, thank you for saving me…!”
“I don’t need to be thanked. It’s hard to wake up when someone is eaten before your eyes.”
“If Odis-sama is here, then maybe…”
When Lexia was halfway through her words, there was a rustle in the bushes behind Odis.
Two girls appeared out of nowhere.
“Wow, it’s been a while, hasn’t it?”
“It’s been a while!”
Tito’s eyes widen at the sight of the two girls, who look exactly alike.
“W-who are these girls…?”
“They are Odis-sama’s disciples!”
“Disciples of the Magic Saint? Awawa, I am Tito, nice to meet you! I’m the disciple of the Claw Saint…!”
“Wow, I see! I’m Ruri, nice to meet you.”
“We’re fellow disciples, right? I’m Riru, nice to meet you!”
“Yes, nice to meet you!”
Xiaolin rolled her eyes as she looked at Ruri and Riru, comparing the two.
“T-these cute girls are the disciples of Magic Saint-sama…? Uh, are you twins?”
“Yes, we are, you know?”
“Yes, we are!”
Ruri and Riru had green hair in side tails, each tied on the opposite side, but otherwise, they looked identical. Their big eyes and well-defined faces were as cute as dolls, and their innocent smiles gave the impression of friendliness.
Although it would be hard to guess from their dainty appearance, their abilities as disciples of the Magic Saint are solid and have already far surpassed those of the top court magicians.
Luna was surprised by the unexpected reunion and exclaimed in admiration.
“Even so, blowing away Bloody Bear so easily, that is as expected from the Magic Saint-sama…”
Odis pushed up his glasses with a wry smile.
“More importantly. You are the Princess of the Kingdom of Arcelia and her escort, I believe. Why are you in this remote and dangerous forest?”
“Well, actually…”
Lexia summarized what had happened so far.
“Wha!? A princess went on a journey to save the world…! And now you’re in the middle of a battle for the throne of the Lianxi Empire?”
“Wow, that’s a bit unexpected, isn’t it?”
“Yes, it’s quite unusual!”
Ruri and Riru also rolled their eyes.
Odis’ brow furrowed.
“I see, so that’s why you’re in such a dangerous forest. The first princess of the Arcelia Kingdom, a skilled assassin Headhunter, a disciple of the Claw Saint, and the Princess of the Lianxi Empire are all in the middle of a dangerous quest…? What in the world is going on? Are all of Usagi’s acquaintances so unpredictable and strange…?”
As expected, Odis was surprised.
When Odis touched his forehead, Lexia tilted her head.
“Why is Odis-sama in this forest?”
Odis is usually confined to the Heavenly Mountain, where rare plants grow wild, for his magical research, and combined with his natural dislike of humans, he does not go outside very often.
With green eyes, Odis looked out over the Abyssal Forest.
“I also came here in search of ingredients for the ‘elixir of immortality.’ There are rare medicinal herbs here that can’t even be found in Heavenly Mountain.”
“Huh! So Odis-sama knows how to make the elixir of immortality?”
“Well, yes. Then why don’t you girls know? If you were given the challenge to make the elixir, wouldn’t you have been shown how to make it?”
“That’s…”
Xiaolin turned around weakly.
Realizing that something was wrong, Odis nodded and let out a sigh.
“…Well, that’s fine, I’ll tell you the ingredients and how to make it. In return, I’ll ask you to prepare one for me as well.”
“! Thank you!”
“Master, you’re planning to lay low, aren’t you?”
“You’re so lazy!”
“Shut up, you two.”
Since Odis was not confident in his physical strength due to the fact that he usually stayed indoors for research, he felt that running around the forest in search of materials was too much of a hassle.
“Of course, we’ll be happy to prepare one for Odis-sama and the others!”
“Thank you for your help…!”
“Then I will start preparing the elixir. You girls take care of the rest.”
Ruri and Riru raised their hands in place of Odis, who unloaded his luggage and began to set up a base.
“Yes! We’ll look for the ingredients together, okay?”
“Let’s look for them!”
“Thanks, that’s very helpful! Let’s go find the ingredients for the elixir!”
“…However, the dispute over the heir to the Lianxi Empire is… a troublesome matter for a princess of a single country.”
Odis muttered in dismay as he suddenly stopped Xiaolin.
“Hmm? Wait. You said your name was Xiaolin, right? You, instead of magic power, you have red power flowing through your body?”
“R-red power…?”
The unexpected words left Xiaolin stunned, and Lexia replied.
“That might be the dragon power.”
“Eh? B-but if it’s dragon power, it should be orange…”
Odis stroked his chin with interest.
“I see. I think it is a unique power that has been handed down in the imperial family of this country.”
“Yes. But I can’t use the dragon power. …I am sure that my body has no dragon power.”
“Huh? What are you talking about? It’s not that you don’t have any dragon power; it’s just that you can’t let it out, but you have an enormous amount of power inside of you.”
“Huh?”
“You have an enormous amount and density of power. It is the source of power itself.”
“I-I have such an enormous amount of dragon power…?”
Xiaolin’s eyes widened in disbelief, and the faces of Lexia and the others lit up.
“It’s just as I thought! I knew Xiaolin-sama was capable of becoming a great emperor, just like the first emperor!”
“I never thought that Xiaolin would have such power…”
“It’s amazing, Xiaolin-san!”
Xiaolin was confused.
“N-no, it can’t be… because I’ve been working hard all this time, and Lexia-san and the others have been training me, but I haven’t been able to use any of it…”
Then Odis said it like it was nothing.
“It’s because of the bugs that have nested in you.”
“Eh? B-bugs…?”
“Yes, cursed bugs. Even though a tremendous amount of dragon power is being produced in you, it is being consumed by the bugs that are lurking in your body. As a result, you are unable to manifest your dragon power.
“Xi-Xiaolin-san, how could this happen to you?”
Tito and the others gasped, and Xiaolin held her chest in dismay.
“How in the world… could such… cursed bugs be…?”
“It must have been done by someone who doesn’t like you; I can’t think of anything else. No, or…”
Odis stopped mid-sentence.
“Someone put those damn bugs in me…? Who in the world…?”
Luna, seeing Xiaolin’s pale face, spoke up to cheer her up.
“At least now we know why you can’t use dragon power. Even if we don’t know what to do about it, it’s a step forward.”
“Yes! Now, let’s just focus on the trial! After the trial is over, we’ll find out who did this and bring them to justice!”
“Yes! Let’s ask the culprit how to kill the bugs and regain Xiaolin-san’s dragon power!”
Odis shouted to Lexia and the others, which suddenly gained momentum.
“Wait. The trial is supposed to be a mechanism that can only be overcome by using dragon power, right?”
“Y-yes.”
“I’m not the kind of person who cares about others, but… a curse that eats power is extremely unpleasant. Besides, I’m also interested in dragon power.”
At these words, Lexia and the others send expectant glances.
“Odis-sama, could it be…”
Odis nodded with a flat breath.
“I will exorcise the cursed bug for you.”
“! T-thank you very much…!”
“But it is a curse that has grown after being fed with a huge amount of dragon power for a long time. Be prepared for some pain.”
“Y-yes…!”
Lexia and the others hold Xiaolin’s hand as she nods nervously.
“Leave it to us to gather the ingredients for the secret elixir! Do your best, okay?”
“Remember your training when the going gets tough. You should be able to strengthen your body and mind a bit.”
“You’ll be fine, Xiaolin-san! Believe in yourself!”
“Yes…!”
Xiaolin nodded, her eyes filled with a strong light.
