Chapter 2424 - Spreading Aftermath ㉕
<Author’s Notes>
I don’t have much time today, so today’s chapter is a bit short.
After enjoying tea and cake with Kaito at the café, and since the time for her pickup was drawing near, Marie parted ways with Kaito there, each going their separate ways at the café, and Marie moved to the place where her pickup was scheduled to arrive, as previously arranged.
Up until now, Marie had been floating in a dreamlike haze. It was a feeling brought about entirely because of an unreasonable situation and an unreasonable existence like Kaito. But once she separated from him and had a moment to breathe, reality sped up and crept right up behind her all at once.
[……Marie!]
[Ah, F- Father……]
Originally, someone from the Hamilton Marquisdom was supposed to pick her up, and she was supposed to meet her father afterward at Marquis Hamilton’s residence. However, when he heard there was a possibility that Marie might unexpectedly encounter Kaito again at the Hamilton estate, Baron Ritch became worried and came to pick her up himself.
And perhaps because she relaxed a little upon seeing her father’s face…… a bit of calm surfaced in her heart…… and the reality she had been avoiding bared its fangs.
[……M- Marie? What’s the matter? Your face is pale…… no, beyond pale…… And you’re sweating so much……]
[F- F- Father…… t- this is strange…… I can’t…… wake up…… from the dream……]
[A dream? What are you talking about?]
[B- Because…… everything until now must have been a dream…… If it wasn’t……]
Marie’s face grew so drained of color it seemed as though all the blood had left it, and she began trembling violently, sweat pouring down her in large drops.
Seeing her in such an abnormal state, Baron Ritch was confused, but he somehow managed to get Marie into the carriage. Even after she sat down in the seat, Marie’s trembling didn’t calm, in fact, it grew worse and worse. It was immediately clear that something was very wrong.
[……F- F- Father…… I- I might already be done for. I’ve committed…… unforgivable disrespect toward Kaito-sama……]
[Disrespect? J- Just calm down. Take slow, deep breaths and calmly tell me what happened.]
[Because something like that could never happen! So I thought it was a dream…… but if it was real…… t- then I shamefully extorted Kaito-sama for expensive clothes and accessories…… and even received a large-capacity magic box…… ababa…… T- That alone adds up to over three white gold coins’ worth…… N- No matter if Kaito-sama was the one who suggested it, it’s still far too rude…… I- It’s over. That terrifying God will surely punish me. Father, please forgive your daughter for passing before you……]
[C- Calm down. I still don’t understand the situation. Start from the beginning, slowly……]
[Ah, no, I can’t…… I can’t…… aah……]
[Marie!? Get a hold of yourself, Marie!!]
With her invincibility mode gone, everything she had been avoiding came crashing into her mind all at once. Unable to withstand the torrent of information and emotion flooding her head, Marie lost consciousness.
This, of course, left Baron Ritch troubled. He understood that something serious had happened, and Marie had said something terrifying about having committed disrespect towards Kaito, but he had no idea what the details were.
And without knowing those details, there was nothing he could do…… Holding the unconscious Marie in his arms, Baron Ritch could only stare blankly, his own face turning pale.
Incidentally, Kaito didn’t think Marie had disrespected him at all, if anything, he had simply enjoyed himself, and his evaluation of Marie had risen considerably.
As for the value of over three white gold coins, that amount would normally be astonishing, but to Kaito, it “costs less than Alice’s binge eating”, and thus not even remotely worth worrying about.
And as for the terrifying God, Makina, whom Marie worried would punish her, since Kaito was happy, there was no reason for her to punish anyone. Marie’s fear was completely unnecessary…… though neither she nor Baron Ritch had any way of knowing that at this point.
That said, what would trouble Baron Ritch going forward would be that the nobles would soon begin regarding Marie as either Kaito’s lover or mistress…… but of course, he also had no way of knowing that yet.
<Afterword>
Serious-senpai : [Terrifying God, she said……]
Makina : [How rude! What part of me is supposed to be terrifying? I don’t go around punishing my beloved child’s friends without reason, nor do I nitpick and accuse them of extortion when my beloved child himself doesn’t mind. Well, having awe and reverence towards a God is natural, so I’m not going to call it disrespect.]
Serious-senpai : [No, isn’t it because you threatened every noble……? And you literally made some of them experience the future as a form of punishment, showing them hell……]
Makina : [Serious-senpai? Right now, we’re talking about lumps of flesh who at least have enough substance to understand the bare minimum. I’m not talking about garbage, so that example doesn’t apply.]
Serious-senpai : [……Ah, yes.]
