Side Story: Far to the West, a Place of Eternity
“…Yoshua, pull yourself together!”
I slowly come to the sound of Myrril’s voice.
Where am I? What was I doing?
“You can’t just stand there like an idiot! Why don’t you shoot back?”
When I come to my senses, I see the armed group of barbarians approaching us, bows drawn.
“Guh!”
The 7.62x25mm Tokarev bullet fired from the PP-19 Bizon pierces the archer’s chest. However, perhaps because of their excitement or drugs, the men continue to come toward us, shouting even though they have been hit. Even when we fire in rapid succession and cut them down, they immediately get up and start moving again. I’ve heard that small caliber handgun bullets, which have too much penetrating power, lack the ability to hit the body.
“Still, 7.62mm should be enough against a human, right?”
As I cut down the approaching enemy, I get impatient when the 64-round spiral-loaded cylindrical magazine runs out of bullets. I’m not used to changing magazines yet. Even as I fumbled around, the enemy came rushing at us.
“Uriiiiiiiiiii…!!!”
The men with triumphant expressions on their faces wielded their crude swords, but one by one, they collapsed after getting their heads blown off.
As I turned around to make sure I was safe, I saw Myrril, who was holding a UZI, looking at me with a stunned expression. It seemed that she had come to cover me after the enemies behind us were destroyed.
“As I thought, there’s nothing better than the ‘Forty-Five’.”
“…Yeah, I guess so.”
When I looked at the motorcycle helmet lying on the ground, I could see that it had been dented in a perfect arc. I had lost my memory for a while, but I could understand that I had been hit by a stone from a catapult.
It was a surprise attack from a long distance while I was riding at a leisurely pace. If it hadn’t been for Myrril’s support, I would have died completely.
I ran over to the Russian motorcycle with a sidecar that I had used as a shield. The body of the bike had also taken a hit from the rocks, but it didn’t seem to have suffered any serious damage.
After checking it over and starting the engine, Myrril, who had been examining the enemy’s corpse, returned, wiping her hands on a piece of cloth.
“What a warm welcome.”
“What kind of continent is this?”
“Isn’t this the barbarian land we hoped for? So our wish has come true.”
That’s true, but… we hoped for it, and it’s exactly the kind of Wild West we hoped for. It’s so bad it’s almost funny.
We’ve been threatened, attacked, and hunted since we landed, and we’re exhausted both physically and mentally. The people we’ve established friendly relations with… well, there are some, but 99.999% of them are either hostile to the point of death or individuals who are abnormally hostile.
If they’re trying to rob us, I can understand that. I can also understand if it’s for political reasons. From what I’ve seen so far, the reason they’re attacking us is because of a physiological sense of disgust, an instinctive sense of hostility, and an instinctive sense of struggle.
There’s nothing we can do about it from our side.
“It feels like we’re dealing with monsters.”
“That may be true.”
“Huh?”
“I thought they might be unknown demi-humans, but their magic wavelengths are similar to those of monsters.”
After listening to Myrril’s explanation, I understood that it was something like the emotional range. The emotions of demi-humans tend to be more extreme than those of humans, but these people right now, or rather, the people of this continent in general, are too simple, like a zero or a one.
“Besides, look.”
Myrril showed me a reddish-black gem the size of a softball. It’s an organ that accumulates and converts magical power, and it’s found inside creatures with magical power. I think she checked it while she was putting the finishing touches on the creature, but she just ripped it out. I don’t know how to react to that.
“Only orcs have magic stones that big.”
“Seriously?”
“It also has orc-like intelligence and characteristics.”
“Huh?”
Is it a continent where human-sized orcs gather in packs? My dreams are expanding… (reading in a monotone).
“It’s not impossible to run back home, you know?”
Myrril laughs, looking as if she wouldn’t even consider such a thing.
The other cultural spheres are at least 4,000 kilometers away across the open sea, and the only means of travel we have is a hovercraft. It’s something we would consider as a last resort, though.
“There’s no way we’re going back. Our journey has just begun.”
Saying something like that, which sounds like the end of a canceled manga, I start the bike.
I’m stunned by my own stupidity for choosing a bad move at this late stage. I should have used the weapons I’m used to, but I left my main weapons, like assault rifles, with my friends because they were bulky and heavy.
The base at Casemaian, the harbor fortress of Efan, which had been taken from the Imperial Army and incorporated as a territory, and the southern continent of Solbesia. We had built supply depots in each place where our comrades had settled and had stockpiled a huge amount of weapons, ammunition, and fuel.
“I thought I’d get rid of all my stuff and make a fresh start, but…”
Despite the magical storage, all I brought with me was a submachine gun and a TT-33 military pistol, along with 7.62x25mm pistol rounds. The only vehicle I had for land travel was a motorcycle with a sidecar.
It was a decision I made in high spirits as I headed to a new country, but at the time, I was completely out of my mind.
“I think you wanted to play ‘Shibari Game,’ didn’t you? Just as you wish.”
“That’s right.”
We have more than enough ammunition. Even if we keep shooting like it’s raining, there’s no problem because we have 30,000 bullets just from the surplus supply depot that we brought with the majority of the group. The only problem is that no matter how many bullets you shoot, if you’re a bad shot, you won’t hit anything, and there are some people for whom handgun bullets don’t work.
“What happened to your ‘Arasukan’?”
“I left it behind.”
The Ruger Redhawk Alaskan that Myrril carries as a charm is a revolver that uses the ridiculously powerful 454 Casull ammunition. I bought one, but the recoil is too much for me. Unlike the strong-armed dwarves, I’m a wimp, so I can’t handle it.
“Isn’t that a ‘Browning’ and a ‘Mauser’?”
“That’s right.”
I left my favorite Browning High Power and my super favorite Mauser automatic pistol at our friends’ base. I was afraid I might drop or break them on the trip.
“You might be the one that gets damaged first, you know?”
Myrril laughs happily as if she can read my thoughts. Even as she says it, she has no intention of letting me get even a scratch. Neither do I, of course. We have no armored vehicles, no heavy weapons, and not even long-range weapons to attack from a distance. It’s a game with endless restrictions. It’s really a “weak and new game.” I think to myself that I’ve made a mistake.
“Don’t worry about it.”
Myrril looks at me with a calm expression.
“You think there won’t be any problems?”
“Of course, there will be. How can there be peace if you and I are together?”
That’s right. Ever since we met, we’ve been involved in bloody battles. Every time we’ve crossed the line between life and death, our hearts have become more and more bound together until they’ve become so intertwined that it’s almost impossible to separate them.
“I don’t like to fight.”
“Give up. If you get attached to fighting, it’s the same thing.”
We walk on, laughing, towards an unknown land, an unknown horizon.
Whatever awaits us there, I don’t care. As long as we stay together.
