Chapter 219 – Feast
“Congratulations on our victory and safe return!”
“”””Cheers!””””
A pitcher of beer clinked with Ivan-san’s short, succinct speech.
“Phew, a drink after work is the best, right?”
Ivan-san puts a big smile on his face as he sips the pale bubbles of ale. I wonder if this is the same in every country.
I was under the impression that ale was a warm, foamless, stale, tasteless beer. But the Republic’s ale has the richness of Irish and English ales, and the aroma of the barley is very much in evidence… In short, it’s not bad. I don’t think I’d want to drink a cold, draught beer in the middle of winter, either. Mmm, this is delicious.
The place for the feast was our own “Wolf’s Tail Pavilion.” Ivan-san is a childhood friend of the landlady, so even though it was short notice, we got half the rent of the restaurant. We have guests who don’t mind the noise, but most people don’t seem to mind too much. We raise our glasses to the story of the guards’ heroism.
The main course is a huge whole roasted bird…the size of a turkey, but I don’t know what it’s called. The skin is crisp and covered in a thin, saucy substance, and the meat inside is plump and, juicy and wonderfully delicious. The belly is stuffed with shredded potatoes covered with herbs and colorful root vegetables. These absorb the flavor, fat, and juices of the meat and are delicious.
The side dish, minced meatballs on skewers, similar to tsukune, is delicious with a small boiled egg inside that looks like a quail. The slightly crunchy texture is probably due to the chopped onion. The sweetness of the cooked onion and the spiciness of the egg blend together to create a refreshing, sweet, and spicy flavor that enhances the flavor of the meat.
In a large ceramic bowl was the offal stew, a specialty of Sarz. It was served on a plate with mashed potatoes. It was rich and flavorful and went well with the local beer. Myrril-san, who apparently doesn’t like alcohol very much, eats it happily with a glass of fruit juice while laughing with everyone else. So cute.
But the landlady’s cooking has endless variations. If possible, I’d like a chance to exchange skills with the good cooks of Casemaian. If that’s not possible, I’d like to exchange recipes with her. I’d like to connect the regular route as soon as possible. My dreams are expanding.
“Sandra, this is delicious! I love the burning sensation in the back of my throat!”
“Oh, that’s the fire liquor (distilled liquor) that Takifu-san brought. I was just about to talk to him about buying it.”
“Oh, good. Stock up on it.”
“Whiskey, huh? It’s a trial product that came from across the sea, and I’m going to start making it at my place in the spring.”
“Uisuki, huh? How much is a bottle of it?”
Selling price, huh? I hadn’t thought about that yet. The landlady told me that three large copper coins for a shot or one silver coin for a double shot would be very popular. That means the bottle was about 20 shot glasses… so it would be about 10 to 12 silver coins. I don’t think the price is too high, but if I’m going to sell small quantities of a rare item, I shouldn’t sell it at a discount.
“A little more than ten silver coins… I guess.”
“That’s a lot… but it’s worth it!”
I think buying from Simon was cheaper than buying from a mass-market liquor store in Japan. The J&B Ivan-san is drinking now costs less than a thousand yen. I wonder how much it would cost to make it in Casemaian… I haven’t even talked about the equipment yet, let alone the plan, so I’m just guessing.
“The clear ones over there are a little cheaper. Maybe eight pieces of silver per bottle.”
“Captain, this one tastes good too!”
Whatever it is, they really don’t mix alcohol over here, do they? I can’t imagine drinking 40% alcohol straight. Everybody gets drunk.
Well, I’m glad they seem happy.
“Oh, I’ll give you this before I forget.”
“Hmm?”
With that, I shoved a lump of gold the size of a chicken egg into everyone’s hands. The dazed guards looked at it for a moment and fell silent.
“I just happened to pick it up, so we shared it…”
“No, I can’t have that.”
Ivan-san gives it back to me. Sembeck-san and the others returned it with some regret.
“I know this happens all the time. At least we try not to cross the line, even if it’s just us. The Roses were a good lesson for us.”
“If you make a mistake, you could have ended up like that. I see. That’s a good point.”
The guards chuckled at Myrril-san’s words. That might have been the case, depending on the first encounter.
“But that doesn’t fit into the Uwin-Uwin philosophy. Right, Takifu?”
“That’s right.”
“Uwin… What’s that?”
“It would be a nice story if it ended right here. I don’t like the idea of clinging to our own wealth while looking at honest poverty. I am not satisfied unless I can at least reach out to them in peace. This is the arrogance of the Demon King.
I hope they don’t throw it all on me and say something like, “I’m in trouble.” Honestly, I don’t even think about it.
I waved my finger, stowed the gold ore, and placed another into their surprised hands. Seeing this, Myrril-san nods in satisfaction. She helped me pack the cumbersome bags before, you know.
“Oooh!?”
“This is good, isn’t it? These cores are from the magical beasts we killed with our own hands. Since the cores originally came from outside the Republic, it shouldn’t be a problem.”
“Even if it doesn’t become a problem. But it’s still a bribe, isn’t it?”
That’s right. The reason I put the bags in small packages in the first place was to see if I could use them as bribes somewhere else. I put them in leather bags, one big one to keep and several smaller ones to sell. The bags were packed in leather pouches of various sizes. Most of them were from magical beasts I hunted in the southern part of the kingdom. They are very rare and not easy to come by. They make great gifts.
“My goodness, you’re a stubborn man. Think about it. Do you think we would ever ask you for anything at this point?”
Ivan-san had already… mumbled something about sweets, and the poor captain waved his hand hastily at Myrril-san’s words.
“A-alright! This is a gift. It’s a personal token of friendship. Right?”
“Umu. I’ve seen your hard work. Proof that there are rewards for being pure. Now put this behind you.”
If they sell it, they will get at least as much as the gold ore I just offered them. The guards happily stuffed the leather bags into their pockets.
“Well, cheers!”
“”””Oooohhh!””””
