Chapter 231 – To the East Again
With the goblins safely dispatched, Myrril and I made our way to the front gate of the city. To make sure no one had survived, I piled the bodies around me and knocked on the sturdy-looking gate, which was closed. On the surface of the gate were many scratches left by the goblins, probably from their attacks. There were several broken daggers stuck in the gaps between the doors as if they had tried to pry them open. Of course, there was no way it would open like that, but the goblin’s intelligence wouldn’t understand that.
“Hey, can you open the door?”
“Ivan-san, it’s done!”
“Huh? Already?”
The gatekeeper rushed to open the door, and the guards came out in droves.
“Hey, are you kidding me?”
Ivan-san, the plainclothes captain of the guards, is stunned, and Sembeck-san, the deputy captain, laughs hysterically as he opens the gate.
“Amazing, it’s a picture-perfect massacre. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
“Well, you’re right. Not a single one of them escaped… which is impossible on the battlefield.”
“That’s true if it was a human. When half of them die, even a fool would usually run away or surrender.”
Is that so? I remember the soldiers of the kingdoms and empires who kept advancing until they were crushed in Casemaian. That wasn’t normal.
“Are you okay?”
“I’m fine. Not even a scratch.”
“I thought it might be, but just in case.”
“No, thanks for your concern. Thanks to the magic tool, we were able to get this over with quickly.”
We both have our weapons stowed away, except for our holstered pistols. The guards have seen this many times, so it’s too late now, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to waste my time showing off. I’ll have to pick up the PPSh at the gate later, too.
“Thanks, Takifu, and Mir too.”
Ivan-san bowed his head with a relieved look on his face.
“What? It’s a piece of cake for us.”
“Well then, we have to collect the bodies. Also, someone should contact the Adventurers’ Guild and ask them to take care of the situation and prepare the money for payment.”
“Yes, sir.”
Sembeck-san instructed his guards to go to the guild. Ivan-san, who was about to lose his entire vacation, was about to return to the city gate with a look of relief on his face.
“When things settle down, I’ll thank you personally. In the meantime, I’m going to borrow a horse-drawn sleigh for a quick ride.”
“Ivan-san, you’re leaving now? Where is your parents’ house?”
“Nordanan. You would have to be from the Republic to know that. It’s about a hundred miles northwest of Lafan…”
“That’s a town on the border with the Eastern Territories, along the river, isn’t it?”
“Oh, yes. How do you know it?”
“I don’t know Nordanan, neither the city nor the people, but I know some people from the Eastern Territories who have crossed the river. That’s how I found out.”
The conversation naturally turned to the sea serpent barbecue in Lafan. When I described the appearance of the people I had become friends with, Ivan-san’s eyes widened.
“Edel or Peter, the eccentric old man? I heard he used to be a traveling priest.”
I don’t know his name, but the old man who was in charge of the Eastern Territories people was strangely pushy and logical in a way, so he was probably that “old eccentric.” The reason for the subtle sour look on his face is probably because the cities on the other side of the border have been at loggerheads for generations, or they’ve had some sort of dispute… Well, that’s okay.
It’s about noon now, so even if he went by horse-drawn sleigh, he’d probably not reach Roses until the end of the day.
“Are you going to camp?”
“Yes, we have warm clothes and gear. And if we rent a sled with a tent, we’ll be fine.”
Well, that may be true for you since you are an active duty soldier, but for his wife and daughter, who were nodding their heads in sorrow, there was no way they would not have a problem.
I thought for a moment and looked at Mir. She tilted her head and nodded with a look in her eyes. It was as if she was saying, “I don’t know what you want to do, but I don’t mind.”
“I’ll send you on your way then. I have business over there.”
“Huh? Not to Nordanan, right? You mean to Lafan?”
To be exact, to the sea. I showed Haru-san, the receptionist of the Adventurer’s Guild, who had just appeared on the scene, the corpses lying all over the snowfield.
“Haru-san, what about the goblin corpses? If there are any materials you need, I can bring them to you.”
“There are no materials that can be used on goblins. You could cut off the left ear to check the number of kills, but I’ve already checked it, so it’s just a piece of trash. We can bury it later or put it in the Lake of the Witch.”
“Well then, shall we take care of it?”
After saying that it would be appreciated, Haru-san asked me how I would dispose of it. If I disposed of it improperly, it would cause problems later. Not only is it unhygienic, but the smell might attract monsters and wild beasts.
“We will take the Lafan out to sea and throw them into the sea. We also have some corpses here, so we’ll take them with us.”
“You still have them?”
“We can’t just dump them there, can we? It would be a source of plague.”
Like in the royal capital, I thought about it but did not say it out loud, and when I looked at Mir-san, she smiled and nodded her head. Do you understand?
“…By the way, how many are there?”
In response to Ivan-san’s question, I counted the defective items in my storage. There is no index function, so this is just a rough estimate.
“I think it’s a little over 7,000.”
“Huh?”
“That’s more than the population of Lafan.”
Haru-san laughed in amazement.
The goblin corpses are quickly stowed away, and it takes about 30 minutes. There were very few splattered ones, probably due to the ammunition used, and they all died with confused looks on their faces. To my surprise, about a hundred of them had been shot through the eyeballs.
“Myrril, how did you manage to aim the PPSh-41?”
“It’s not that hard to hit them. But the bullets just went right through. But with goblins, they don’t die quickly, and it takes a lot of time and effort to aim one at a time, so I had to go back to the full auto cleave.”
I was at a loss for words as she said this with a look of self-disappointment. As I admired the Simo Hayha-like dwarf girl, I continued with the storage work quickly and easily.
“Then please move away from there a bit.”
Ivan-san’s wife, Irene, was mildly surprised when I parked the hovercraft Griffon in front of the city gate, and the daughter, Korina-chan, shouted with joy.
“Amazing! Is that a magic sled?”
“Yes, it is. It is powered by the strength of 70,000 monsters trapped in the demon world.”
“Mir-san, don’t lie so casually.”
However, I think she understood that it was a joke, and Korina-chan laughed. Her smile is just like her mother’s.
“This is a mechanical vehicle similar to a magic tool, but instead of magic, it burns something called oil to move. It’s a bit noisy and smells a bit, but it’s much faster than a horse-drawn sled, so I think we’ll reach Nordanan in the evening.”
“Eh? That much!? I was told that if you leave before dawn, you won’t get there until midnight at the earliest.”
Well, that’s not so bad for a horse-drawn sleigh. If you left now, it would be tomorrow evening, including the camp.
“Come on, get in. We’ll leave right away, okay?”
“Yes.”
“Takifu-san!”
Just as I was about to start the engine, Inos-san from the merchant guild came running in. I had a bad feeling that the guild master himself would come running. Should I run away? Is that too much to ask? It would be impossible.
“If you are going to Lafan, I received a message asking if you could come to the lord’s mansion.”
“Is there something wrong with Lord McKin?”
“No, I have heard nothing of it. The merchant guild of Lafan has informed me that the guild master would like to greet you.”
“I don’t want to.”
“Eh.”
“I sense an evil intent in inviting me to the lord’s mansion instead of the merchant guild. Maybe he’s a snob with a penchant for politics?”
“Th-That’s… No, yes.”
So what is it? I mean, he’s too honest, right? If that’s what’s waiting for me, I won’t go.
“You’re just as bad as Takifu when it comes to expressing things, aren’t you?”
“Ah, Mir-san? Please stop referring to people as if they are examples of bad negotiators. Even if it’s true, it makes me feel bad.”
“I’m sorry, but it’s still a compliment. If the guild master is a man who lies without hesitation, I would cut ties with the entire guild.”
“I can understand that.”
I mean, how and where did this happen? Ecla-san and others seem to be using some sort of magical means to communicate with remote areas. But I don’t know the details, and I don’t want to pry.
I’ve already heard from Merel-san, a merchant from the Empire, that there is a social networking service among merchants using magic, but it doesn’t seem to be the same.
“Can’t you just pretend that you haven’t heard about it?”
“Sorry. I received a confirmation of receipt, so I assume it was passed on. Of course, Takifu-san could refuse it.”
“What kind of person is the guild master of Lafan?”
“He is an elf named Loringen-san. He is about the same age as… Ecla-san, or maybe a little older.”
I don’t know the witch’s age. I don’t even want to know. I mean, elves again. I have no reason to dislike them just because they’re elves, but somehow, I’m not good at them.
“He’s a distant relative of McKin-sama, and he used to work at the merchant guild headquarters in the capital. Although we are not actively responsible for him, we do not have the authority to stop his will, words, or deeds.”
Each guild seems to maintain a certain amount of independence, but a person who was at the center of a merchant guild must have a great deal of authority.
“Oh, that’s okay. Ecla-san is in Lafan right now.”
“I guess that’s okay, right?”
I forgot. I’m getting a bad feeling. I just wanted to get rid of the bodies in the sea.
“Ah… then I’ll come by when I feel like it. Tell them not to get their hopes up too high, as my schedule may not work out.”
“I’m asking for you!”
Inos-san saluted me, and I started the Griffon.
“It’s a problem.”
“If he’s an idiot, let the Demon King’s hammer fall on him. It’s not a problem.”
“No, it’s a big problem.”
But we’re not from the Republic, and if we can’t accept the offer, we’ll just turn it down. Even if we were forced to do something, I doubt McKin-dono would be involved.
“Let’s go to Nordanan and see what happens.”
“That’s right. All right, Takifu, let’s get this thing going!”
As soon as the obstacle through the forest is gone, I try the full throttle of the Griffon. I have a full tank, and my pockets are warm, so I don’t have to worry about fuel consumption. The wind-driven giant is slow to respond, but it slowly accelerates and begins to sprint across the snowfield.
“Wow, so fast!”
The women all stare intently out the window. Ivan-san is the only one in the passenger seat who is pale as he watches the scenery fly by at high speed.
“What’s wrong?”
“It’s just crazy… something this big can move at such a speed. Before, I didn’t have time to think about whether I was going to live or die… but it’s impossible, it’s impossible, impossible.”
Oh, this is the kind of person who would be afraid of airplanes in my former world. It’s no wonder. Just talking about airplanes, I think so, too.
I couldn’t find any words to comfort or reassure him, so I laughed at the strong guard captain.
“That’s the way it is. No good will come from overthinking things. In this situation, you just have to be open and honest.”
He must have had many near-death experiences, but for some reason, he accepted my words and laughed as if he had given up.
“Yeah, that’s the way it is.”
