Chapter 246 – The Demon King’s Nightmare
“…So now we are back in the pirate stronghold. What you see here is the miracle of Prince Haidar of Solbesia. He has created a paradise of eternal spring in the midst of winter. It is quite a feat.”
I was playing with Moff in the forest that stretches out in the center of the square when I seemed to have fallen asleep in the warmth of a mild spring day.
I was awakened by the sound of Myrril’s voice, which sounded like she was having fun.
I went in the direction of the voice with Moff and found Nojaloli-san talking to the sky in an open space in the middle of the forest.
She looked so cute in the sparkling light, but for some reason, she was holding a black ladle.
“Hey, Myrril-san, what are you doing?”
“Oh, His Majesty the Demon King is here. He is also doing well here. The Republic is quite a nice place; the food is good, and many of the people are simple and good.”
Eh, what is this? She spoke in the tone of a reporter or a video letter, which really surprised me.
“Next to him is the snow wolf, Moff, whom I introduced to you in the last issue. He understands most of what you say and is looking forward to meeting you.”
“Um, who are you talking to?”
“Do you see that white thing floating over there?”
I don’t know. With my eyesight, I saw both white and black… Uh, about a hundred meters up in the sky, there is a balloon-like object with a propeller flying overhead. Below it was a gondola-like structure, but it didn’t look like it had people on it. It was tiny.
“Here, wave at it.”
I smiled and said, “Bye-bye…”
“Wait, wait, wait. Could it be…?”
“Maybe it’s the one called ‘Doron,’ Rinko made that.”
Hey, what’s that clumsy saint doing with that?
“Regular communication is boring. Rinko’s idea was to start ‘His Majesty the Demon King Today.'”
“TV show!?”
“Exactly. I don’t know about that, but it’s broadcast on the streets with a magic tool that projects light. I hear it’s quite popular in Casemaian.”
No… wait, that map. Could that heart symbol be…?
“Myrril, after we bought the ring, that thing…”
“Oh. Rinko happened to see it. Unfortunately, the moment of the heavenly light was not broadcast but recorded.”
That’s even worse!
“…They didn’t show that on Casemaian, did they?”
“They are not that disrespectful. They also take our ‘puraibesi’ into consideration. The only thing they see on the street is the part where I communicate with them like this. First of all, they cannot hear our voices from the height of the ‘doron.’ The only voice is the one spoken to this ‘maiku.'”
So that black ladle-like thing was a microphone. That’s good to know. …No, I don’t know if it’s really good or not.
After that, Myrril gave some random updates and said something like, “See you next week,” and the show was over.
“Rinko wants to talk to you.”
I took the headset-like object and put it on my head.
“Good day, Your Majesty.”
“I’m not in a good mood. Why is our winter vacation turning into a reality show?”
“It’s only the third time it’s been aired, and it’s getting a lot of buzz in Casemaian.”
“What are you doing? I heard you have a new airship that comes and goes.”
“We’re also trying this and that with the new airship. I made a prototype of a magic-controlled servo motor based on the actuators of the riding golem. I wondered if I could use it to make a radio-controlled airship. I tried it, and it worked so well that the story just kept going. Instead of batteries, I put in magic cores, which are great. It’s been running for over a month now, and I think we’re close to achieving autonomous operation.”
“That sounds like fun. How are you guys doing?”
“Fine, fine, fine. Everyone is happy and untroubled and doing well. People are moving in from all over, and the Casemaian population is growing.”
“I see. Please let me know if you need anything. I’ll give it to you when the airship arrives.”
“Okay. I don’t have anything special right now. And there’s a long-range drone prototype flying off the continent right now. Good timing, right?”
“Well, yeah.”
This indoor, terrorist-minded, clunky saint isn’t just playing around. It’s hard to deal with people who do what they’re supposed to do.
“Do you know how far it is to the former kingdom of Solbesia?”
“I haven’t been able to locate it, but it was in the southern desert area, right? If so, it was an estimate, but it was 7,000 kilometers.”
“Hey, that’s a lie, right?”
If we were to return from such a place after the battle by rough sea, there would indeed be no legs.
It would not be impossible even with a hovercraft, but it is not hard to imagine that it would be a very difficult task. Is there no choice but to buy a missile boat? The cost is expected to be high, and there are concerns about staffing. I don’t think I could hire Calmon’s father. Besides, and this is the biggest problem, there is no use for it after the winter vacation is over.
“I’m planning to teleport to Solbesia with the Prince’s magic in the near future, but I might be a little late coming back…”
“Don’t worry, I’ll pick you up there. Just go to the coast wherever you want, and I’ll pick you up there. If it’s 7,000 kilometers… what do you think? Maybe you can come back the next day.”
“Pick us up in an airship? Can you go that fast now?”
“Uh… ah, yeah. Something like that. You can count on it. Well, I’ll pick you up at a good time from the drone, so go ahead and do your best to storm out.”
The communication went dead. I doubted that I was connected to Casemaian from a distance, and the audio was strangely clear, so I guessed that the audio coming into the headset was being relayed from the equipment on the drone. I’m not a science or engineering person, so I don’t really understand the logic behind it.
“What did Rinko say?”
“Ah. She said she would pick us up at the right time after the attack. She didn’t tell me why or how, but she said to… go to the coast.”
“The coast. They have a lot of fun there, don’t they?”
“What are you talking about?”
“I don’t know the details either. Well, don’t worry about the return trip. If we can secure a way to get to the coast, we’ll be all set.”
“I’ve already secured that.”
“Then we have no problem.”
Myrril laughed and waved her hand at the drone. I have to admit, though, that I’m still a little worried and concerned.
“You know, Yoshua? I heard that Rinko made a rule in her workshop with old Heimann and the others. And it’s a funny thing. …Or maybe it’s just the way things are.”
“What rule?”
“They say they only make things that make everyone happy.”
