Chapter 248

Here’s the chapter. Enjoy~

Chapter 248 – The Night Before the Departure

In the forest, I set up a large military tent that I had obtained from Simon, with folding beds and bedding inside. In the other tent, I put water, food, canned goods, snacks, dried bread, and retort pouches of food. Since they seemed to know how to make a fire, I taught them how to heat and cook in a pot and how to open containers, and they actually cooked and ate their lunch.

“Delicious, it has a mysterious flavor.”

“Is it meat?”

“Uh… it says beef, so it’s beef. Do you know about cows?”

The kids looked at each other and shook their heads. I was a little nervous for a moment when I learned that Solbesia does not have a beef diet, but I was relieved to learn from the Prince that they simply do not raise cows and that it is not a religious thing.

I also leave some perishable food, such as meat and root vegetables, from the horned rabbit, not in the forest in the spring sunshine, but in a tent I set up near the hill, where winter is still very much in full swing. The temperature is about the same as a small cold storage room, so it will be fine until I return.

“Pray and pour your prayers and magic power into the sacred tree that gives us water every morning and evening.”

“Yes, Prince.”

The Prince tells the leader, Tinian-chan, how to spend time in the forest. The spring forest created by Prince Haidar is supposed to protect against both cold and bad weather, but it still seems to require magic measures to deal with any problems that may arise.

“It will only take five nights at the most. Tinian, you can do it.”

“Yes, Prince.”

“No matter what happens, you just have to stay calm and deal with it. As long as you can protect the others, nothing else matters.”

“Yes, Prince.”

Tinian-chan nodded firmly, vowing to protect her friends even though she was nervous.

“Moff.”

I also had to take care of the important things before we left.

“Woof?”

“While we’re away, you must protect the children who stay here. Tinian-chan will guide them as a big sister, and Lord McKin and Ecla-san will lend a hand. But the one I rely on most is you, Moff.”

“Woof.”

Huh? I ask him with all my heart, but his answer seems to be very blunt.

“He doesn’t need to be asked. He wanted to do it in the first place.”

“Woof.”

“So that’s how it is. Yes. Thanks, Moff.”

I stroked Moff’s throat and belly, grateful for the presence of a wise and gentle companion.

“Woof, woof.”

“Hou.”

“Woof?”

Uh… what’s with the delicate air? Myrril-san and Moff look at each other, but there is a sense of unease as if their feelings are fraying or slipping.

“What’s wrong?”

“W-woof…”

“…He seemed to be saying that the people of Solbesia have a lot of magic in their possession, that it is rich, thick, and delicious.”

“W-woof, woof!”

“Is that true?”

Myrril held Moff’s face and looked into his eyes. His tail hung down and curled around his belly, ruining what had been a very cool look.

“I know you don’t mean to offend. But don’t take too much magic away from the child.”

“W-woof!”

Moff seems to vehemently deny this, saying, “I would never do such a thing, I swear!” But I have never seen Moff so upset. Myrril-san, you’d better leave him alone.

When the children have gone to sleep with Moff in the tent, I call the Prince and his twin guards for a final meeting.

“The return to the throne room will take place before dawn when no one is around.”

“””Yes.”””

“Is there any chance that Kaienholt will not be there?”

“No. In ruling the former Solbesia, there is always a risk of recapture if a mage in control leaves the throne room. If the situation were stable, it could be left to deputies or guards alone, but it has been less than a year since the royal family and people were forcibly removed.”

“At the same time as the teleportation, we will encounter the false Demon King, right?”

“Yes. Kaienholt, who does not trust strangers, will be in the throne room or in the sleeping quarters in the next room. He will have as many men as he can spare guarding him.”

“The road outside the castle is barely wide enough for vehicles. Let’s see what the situation is like and think about it. Even if the road is wide enough for vehicles to pass, I am a little concerned about the strength of the bridges along the way.”

“Yes.”

The Prince and the twins each carry two PPSh, which they have used until they are comfortable with them and carefully maintain themselves. They wear leather gloves to protect against the overheating of the guns and carry ten box magazines in their carry bags. Together with the gun itself, they have 420 rounds. Myrril-san has 130 rounds in her UZI, M1911, and Alaskan. I have 300 rounds in my AKM and RPK.

After storming the throne room and defeating Kaienholt, we planned to escape with Casspir as quickly as possible. Once inside, there would be three PKM light machine guns, ten spare PPSh, and over 3,000 rounds of ammunition, including an M79 grenade launcher and the IEDs I had purchased in addition.

“I don’t think we can lose. But the most important thing is that you don’t get hurt. Remember that. As long as you are safe, you will have many opportunities to retaliate.”

“””Yes.”””

“I know you are in a good mood, but get some sleep. We will leave at first light.”

“””…Yes.”””

The Prince and the twins lay down in the back of the Casspir to get used to the cabin environment while Myrril and I rested in the driver and passenger seats.

“Tomorrow, we’ll be in the land of sand; isn’t that exciting?”

“Yes, your positive attitude really helps.”

“Why, in war, always assume the worst and hope for the best. Isn’t that what you said?”

I guess so. But I don’t remember.

According to what the Prince told me, the shortest distance to the coast is 400 kilometers, and the longest is 700 kilometers. In between, there are mountains, scrubland, some forested areas, and deserts. Most of the inhabitants are from countries and tribes hostile to the former kingdom of Solbesia, and even in an emergency, no help can be expected. Escape will not be easy, even if the Empire does not pursue us.

“The Casspir is a good car. It makes you feel like you can handle anything.”

“Maybe so. This is an old soldier that has been on the battlefield for almost sixty years, but no one has ever died riding it. According to the sales pitch of a good merchant, that is.”

We laughed at each other’s silly stories, and before we knew it, we had fallen into a light sleep.

I was dreaming intermittently, going back and forth between dream and present. I was traveling through the moon desert with Myrril, swaying on a huge camel that looked something like a wild boar. Sitting in front of me was Myrril, wearing a fluffy veil like a thin robe and a folk costume like those worn by the desert people.

“The moon is beautiful, isn’t it?”

I nodded my head, feeling very content.

“Yes, it is beautiful. It really is.”

In the moonlight, I could see countless corpses piled on top of each other in the dunes.
