Chapter 250 – Slaughter Delivery
The fading moonlight hung on the treetops of the sacred tree. Though it had only been a few days, the elven sacred tree that summoned water had already grown into a large tree. In front of the trunk, Prince Haidar held out his hands.
“The ‘Currency of Grace’ has connected our paths. If we pay the price, it will send us to the throne.”
“Roger.”
Myrril and the twin escorts, who had been in some sort of discussion until just before, confirmed their movements in rhythm with each other, looked at each other, and nodded to each other. Are you an idol group before the show? What are you going to do?
“Well, everyone except the prince will be wearing this.”
“This is…”
It’s a blindfold that Simon gave me as a bonus gift. It has a skull pattern on the face like it’s trendy or something. The girls wear it and nod at each other, but it’s creepy.
“Wait, wait, wait, it’s going to be hot where we’re teleporting, isn’t it?”
“I know. It’s not to protect us from the cold; it’s to intimidate.”
“…..Hmm.”
“Just put it on, Yoshua. It’s fine. I made sure it won’t block our view.”
When Myrril-san, where I can only see her eyes, saw me wearing the skull and eye mask, she laughed and said, “It suits you well,” but I was not pleased.
“Shall we go then?”
“”Yes, Prince.””
“Anytime.”
Myrril and I put our hands around each other’s waists and grasped the Prince’s hem. The twin guards did the same, grabbing the hem on the other side.
“Yoshua, when we get to the other side, you get down on one knee, okay? Is that clear?”
“Huh? Oh, to secure the firing range. I understand.”
There are a hundred bodies in front of the sacred tree. I prepared them because each person needs about 20 corpses… something called ‘Currency of Grace’ to return to the throne room.
“Everyone ready for battle?”
“”No problem.””
“I’m ready to go. Your Majesty the Demon King, shall I raise the battle cry?”
“No need. Don’t be overly concerned, and proceed without hesitation. Don’t be in a hurry, don’t be distracted, and don’t be careless. This is only the first step. Your future begins here.
The Prince and his escorts nodded, turned to the sacred tree, and began chanting for the teleportation.
“Let’s go, everyone. Hold on tight.”
The pile of corpses disintegrated into particles of light, enveloping us like a mist. The fine particles of light collided and bounced off each other, emitting light all at once.
When the dazzling light disappeared after a few seconds, the environment was transformed into a dimly lit auditorium.
In front of us was an old stone chair. Is this the throne? Beyond it, a stiff middle-aged man and an old man could be seen. About ten meters away, against the wall, were about thirty soldiers. Most of them were light infantry, but as I had heard, there were some heavy infantry mixed in.
As I was about to enter the battle, Myrril pulled me to my knees.
Huh? Aren’t we supposed to be in a firing position?”
“I have indeed seen the manifestation of the ‘miracle.'”
I bent down and stared at her with a blank stare.
“As proof of my friendship with the holy legitimacy of the royal family, now is the time for me to use my demonic power.”
“”We will restrain the savages who defile the throne room.””
…No, what are you girls doing? I’d like to participate in such a performance. If they give me a line, I’ll probably chew on it.
When I made eye contact with Myrril-san, she silently nodded at me. Let’s leave it alone.
According to the formation we had rehearsed before, we took an angle around the lord to secure each other’s shooting range.
“All hands ready to fire.”
“”””Ready to fire.””””
I said softly, and everyone, including the Prince, pulled the bolt handle at the same time I said it; the PPSh had a safety on the bolt handle that was difficult to use, so the chamber remained empty until the first round was fired. The sound of metal echoed through the quiet room.
The same orders as in training, the same procedures as in training. We just had to do it quietly, accurately, quickly, and as we always do.
When I gestured for them to fire at their own discretion, they nodded in response. Let the battle begin.
The old man and the middle-aged man both prepared for us. I don’t know which one is Kaienholt. I think it would be petty of me to just shoot them and be done with it.
“…It is you. …Haidar?
“You are alive?”
“Yes, I am. I have come back from the brink of death. To wipe away my unfinished sins. My sin is that I let live a vermin that devours the kingdom before the innocent.”
“You…!”
The middle-aged man shouts at the soldiers by the wall.
“What are you doing? He’s a bandit impersonating the bloodline of the previous king, and he deserves to die for his crime! Kill him!”
The soldiers, seemingly coming to their senses, drew their swords and charged us. The Prince remained motionless, and his twin guards opened fire. We, too, swept the enemies away.
“Wha…!”
The decision was made in an instant. The shocked middle-aged man’s voice echoed hollowly. The ten meters from the wall to the throne is a close range, but it is too harsh a condition to come at a submachine gun with only a melee weapon. There are numerous furnishings in between, forcing them to climb over or around them, but they are of no use as shields. In the first place, the soldiers, without even understanding what kind of weapons we had, were instantly turned into a honeycomb and fell down, unable to move.
“…That’s impossible.”
Five heavily armed infantrymen who had been standing behind him stepped in front of the middle-aged man and held up their shields. They reacted and moved more slowly than I had heard.
The old man, thrown from the shield’s protection, crawled to the ground, holding his head, shaking, and repeating words like a prayer. The line that identified him as Kaienholt was gone.
“What the hell is this?”
Kaienholt, the man who has not yet recovered from his confusion, stares at us from behind the shield. He is probably unable to think of an effective response to the threat of firearms he has never seen before.
Prince Haidar takes a step toward the demon king. I leave him with his PPSh to deal with the situation before him while we and the escort twins stand guard around the perimeter.
“Kaienholt.”
The Prince said softly.
“In the name of the royal family of Solbesia, which you have destroyed, I will strike you down. This is not justice.”
There was movement in the shadows behind the throne. The twin guards reacted instantly and shot him down in a hail of bullets.
“…This is a personal grudge, false Demon King.”
Kaienholt grunts in displeasure at the Prince’s self-mocking voice.
“False Demon King, you say? What are you…”
With a snort, Myrril steps forward. Without pausing, she points her hand at me and bows as if to introduce me.
“By some strange fate, we have come to help the Prince. This man is the true Demon King, the Demon King of Demon Kings. We call him the Demon God of Massacre. He is His Majesty Demon King Takifu Yoshua, the ruler of the northern Demon King’s territory of Casemaian.”
Um… Myrril-san. What’s that? I’ve never heard of it.
Well, it doesn’t matter. At this point, there’s no need for intimidation or concealment. I rip off my hot, heavy mask and show Kaienholt my true face. I don’t get any special reaction when he sees my face, which is nothing more than a mass-produced middle-aged man. I feel a probing look and a tickling sensation similar to a magic appraisal, but that’s it.
That’s enough. I’m done. I order the Prince and his escorts to change their magazines.
“This is the first time we have met, the Demon King in all but name… And this is where we part ways.”
As I waved my hand, the Prince and his twin guards fired a volley of shots at Kaienholt, a total of one hundred and fifty-five 7.62mm Tokarev rounds. It seemed as if Kaienholt had put up a magic barrier with all his might, and every time a bullet landed, a burst of magic light flew out.
“Protect the Lord!”
“Understood!”
The two guards holding the large shields moved forward as if they were about to step into the line of fire. I, too, fired RPKs at them with fully automatic fire to support the lord and the twins. The iron shield was covered with a layer of magic barrier that seemed to deflect some of the shots, but the guards were hit by 30 rounds of 7.62-millimeter assault rifle bullets that bounced off the blue-white magic light, and the piercing bullets ate through their guts, shattering them. The armor hit the ground with a clatter, and the fire from the PPSh, then the RPKs, ceased as the ammunition ran out.
“Swap mags!”
“Yes, sir!”
“We’ll hold them; you call for reinforcements!”
The two in the middle line replaced the two in the front line and fit into the hole where the two in the front line died. By this time, the PPSh and RPK magazines had been exchanged. The next thirty rounds went in, and the 7.62mm pistol rounds from the Prince and the twins fired as covering fire, scattering sparks and magical light around Kaienholt. Stray bullets began to hit the ends of his body that could not be covered as the three of them shifted the timing of their attacks and landings, sweeping to scatter the attack positions.
“Ahhhhhhh!?”
The “Demon King of Solbesia,” who had never been wounded before, cowered with a scream and fell back in fear. The two in the middle line also fell, leaving only one escort.
The guard in the rear threw away the magic tool in his hand as if he had no more use for it. I don’t know its function, but I guess it was an alarm or a communication device to call for reinforcements. He replaces it with a large shield and takes up a position to protect Kaienholt.
“Lord Kaienholt, I’ll hold them back. Please escape.”
“You tell me to… escape? Against this little barbarian?”
“This is not the time for that!”
In fact, he seems to be cowering, unable to move. I provoke him and create an opening for him to attack.
“You can run away, Kaienholt. It’s no use. My arrowheads of death will rain down on you by the hundreds and thousands. Until you are dead, no matter where you run to.”
“Shut up, bastard! I have already called for reinforcements. You will not leave this castle alive.”
The guard peered angrily through the cover of his helmet. I chuckled at the heavily armed infantryman staring at me.
“Oh, reinforcements. Reinforcements, huh? How many tens of thousands are there?”
“What?”
“The enemy that attacked the Demon King’s northern territory of Casemaian was a force of 30,000 troops, including heavily armed infantry and heavily armed cavalry. The next enemy was the most advanced and strongest force we could muster, but we turned the tables on them all.”
“What a bunch of nonsense…!”
“If you’re asking for reinforcements, I’m afraid it’s useless. The way the real Demon King fights is not that simple. It is more…”
The UZI warhead had pierced his eyeballs through the gap in his helmet before I could even set up my RPK.
“…But you’ll never get the chance to know.”
“It’s your own damn fault for following the false Demon King.”
Kaienholt stood up, using the old man as a shield.
“You bastard…!”
A magic circle spread out at the Prince’s feet. The twin escorts grabbed him by the collar and pulled him back, and an explosion went off where Haidar had been.
“Die, die, die! You bloody death-defying demons!”
The girls retreated, protecting the Prince, and magic circle after magic circle appeared on the ground. 30 assault rifle rounds are fired from the RPK, but they are blocked by Kaienholt’s hand, which is held out by a magic barrier. Another 30 rounds are fired after a magazine change. Meanwhile, Tokarev rounds and .45 caliber pistol bullets rained down on Kaienholt.
“At this rate…!”
Just when it looked like the man known as “Demon King” was about to be overwhelmed by the ferocious hail of bullets, the sound of footsteps could be heard running this way.
“The 2nd Kingsguard Division is on its way!”
When I turned around, I saw dozens of heavily armed infantrymen, who seemed to be reinforcements, kicking open the door and entering the throne room.
