Chapter 270 – The Last One
“How long is this going to go on?”
“Hey, stop it. Do you want to be tossed out by these people?”
“There’s no way they can do this and get away with it.”
I got in the driver’s seat, ignoring the whining, selfish villagers. But in fact, it is impossible to attack the coast as it is.
The interior of the thickly armored Casspir is cramped, and the rear compartment is only designed for about ten passengers. Even though half of the passengers are children, the twenty-six passengers are crammed into the rear compartment, making it look like an overcrowded train in the middle of the city.
The distance to the sea is still more than two kilometers. I can barely see the horizon from here. My eyes can barely make out the silhouette of the ship.
“Milian, how are the children?”
“They are fine. The tribal chief has taken care of them.”
As I looked back, the children were drinking water and being fed. They may be weak, but that doesn’t seem to be a problem right now. But…
“What about the reaction of the last one?”
“Too far. And very, very weak.”
Impatience makes my mind spin. Should we go back to the top of the cliff? After that, Myrril and I could just teleport to the ship, which would be easier and faster. It would only take an hour to get there and back…
“Yoshua, it’s for you.”
Myrril, who is sitting at the gun emplacement, hands me a headset. A communicator, so it’s Rinko? I had forgotten that she had come to the coast to pick us up.
“It’s me.”
“Oh, sorry to keep you waiting! I just arrived!”
The bouncy voice of the clumsy saint comes over the din. What kind of tension is this?
“Are you here?”
“There are many ships on the shore, but they are the enemy, aren’t they? Can I blow them up?”
“No, you can’t! There are hostages!”
“…Is that so? I can’t see them from the drone above, but… Ah!”
“Hey, what do you mean by “ah”? What do you see?”
“It looks like the flagship has just hoisted its sails. Maybe it’s about to sail.”
“You’ve got to be kidding me, Mir…”
No, I can’t be. With twenty-six people plus three more crammed into an armored car, there’s nothing we can do if we go out to shore.
I can switch to the hovercraft Griffon there… but the volume of the cabin is not that different, and the Griffon is not armored to begin with. During the battle, the elves will be left in Casspir. I can’t drop them off because I don’t even know how many enemies are still on the plains and where they are. There’s no time to send them over the cliff, and I’m the only one who can drive Casspir.
But I can’t just leave them crammed into a car with the windows open in the hot sun because this isn’t a Pachinko parlor parking lot. It’s worse than a cage.
I’m at a complete loss.
“Your Majesty the Demon King!”
As I sat in the driver’s seat, Milian pointed south.
“The Prince’s forest.”
“What about the forest?”
“It’s spreading.”
“Huh?”
I look up from my seat and see a green glow emanating from the top of the cliff. What is happening is a massive display of magic power. The green light that poured down like a shower over the plain exploded one after another like a giant popcorn when it hit the ground, creating trees and engulfing the wasteland in green as I looked at it. The green waterfalls spread out in all directions, spreading their fingers in all directions, crushing, smashing, and tearing apart the horses, supplies, and Imperial soldiers that were still there. The undergrowth rose up in piles of corpses, and gnarled trees were born. I had seen this before, but the sheer power of the uncontrollable force was almost like a natural disaster.
“What are you doing, Prince? I mean that…”
“It’s coming this way.”
Although the distance made it hard to feel, the green area must be expanding at a tremendous rate, overflowing into the surrounding area. In no time, the flat land that was nearly 10 kilometers long and wide was transformed into a dense forest.
“Hey Myrril, I don’t think Casspir can even make it back to the bottom of the hill, right?”
“Maybe.”
Milian calls to us as we look at each other in the gun emplacement.
“The Prince will be here soon.”
“How do you know?”
“It’s a message from the shrine maidens.”
A message. An elf’s communication. I don’t know the details, but I have heard that it is possible to use plants as a medium.
“Can a shrine maiden and another shrine maiden talk to each other even if they are far apart?”
“Yes. There is no shackle anymore. We can talk.”
On the other hand, when they were in the service of the Imperial Army, were they shackled so that they could not speak freely? Well, that’s okay.
“How does the Prince get around here?”
Milian pointed to a green bomb that exploded in a chain reaction, bouncing this way and that.
“He’ll be on that thing.”
“”Huh?””
The currency of grace that had flared up so close to Casspir caused a green explosion, and a green rope that flew from the top of the cliff pierced the tree, which seemed to jump up. The rope, wrapped around the tree like ivy, anchored the tree and held it firmly in place.
Something slides through the rope from far over the cliff. I guess that something is the Prince.
“Hey, hey, they ziplined that far?”
I look closer and see that it’s the Prince and two of his escorts. As expected, they are not holding on by arm strength alone but are riding in some sort of three-person gondola. It looked like it was made of wood, so it was probably handmade by the currency of grace.
“Oh, that looks interesting.”
Myrril looked at it with interest, but I wouldn’t get on it even if I was invited.
“Your Majesty, the Demon King and Queen.”
The Prince and the twins jumped off the gondola as soon as they were near it. The gondola crashed into a grove of trees with the same force. I knew I wouldn’t get in even if they invited me.
The Prince bowed his head as we stepped down from the gun emplacement and greeted them. The twins escorting the Prince held up the composite bow with the pulley I had given them and looked around to make sure everything was okay.
“Thank you for your efforts. Are you hurt?”
“Of course not. We rescued twenty-six people, but it seems that one of them was taken by the Navy. I think the two of us will go to the ship now.”
“That’s what brings us here.”
“…And why is that?”
“The last one at sea has a terribly weak magic reaction. To be more precise, after seeing Your Majesty the Demon King in battle, his reaction suddenly weakened, and he began to move north to the coast.”
“You mean he was taken away and is on the verge of death?”
“From what I saw from the cliff, the imperial army is trying to carry only one person to the ship and then sail away. He is of great value to the Empire. If so, they will not kill him. It is more natural to assume that they used concealment magic.”
I quickly got a bad feeling about this. No, I knew that it was not a premonition. I waited for the Prince to speak. I have a bad feeling that it will not be a rescue from now on.
“Advanced magic like concealment can’t be used when there is a restriction on magic power. That guy is not wearing any shackles. Maybe he was not kidnapped.”
“That guy, you say? You know him, don’t you?”
The Prince’s eyes, looking back at Myrril, are filled with a terrible dark color.
“…Perhaps. I am not sure. If I’m right, that’s the second prince, Mian. He is my half-brother, the traitor who joined the Empire and helped bring down Solbesia.”
