Chapter 274 – Over-Sea Flight

The ground effect plane, which combined Rinko’s knowledge with dwarven technology, was gaining distance.

“But you created something interesting, didn’t you? It doesn’t fly by magic, does it?”

“Yes. It can use magic power instead of fuel, but right now, it’s just using magic to strengthen the plane.”

“It’s called an Ekura no Puran. Yoshua, have you ever flown in one?” [T/n: Ekranoplan]

“No. Where I used to be, I rode in bigger flying machines, but nothing like this.”

It was the first time for me, as well as for Myrril, and the feeling of flying was new. There was some nervousness because it was a transoceanic flight, but even if there was trouble, it would not be a major accident because we would only be descending to the surface of the sea, which was just below us. If the weather got out of control, we could just switch to a hovercraft. In the worst case, I could buy a ship from Simon.

“So far so good, but the problem is the weather.”

“The sea was rough on the way out, in the middle of the trip. We’re about 2,500 kilometers to the northwest, but we’re making a big turn to the east on the way back, so I think we’ll be okay.”

Rinko and the crew had learned their lesson on the way in, so they took their drone, which was undergoing long-range flight tests, up into the sky to observe the weather. It seemed that they had encountered a typhoon on their way out, but at the moment, there were no major weather changes on their way.

“Yoshua, can I ask you to add some more magic power while you’re at it?”

Next to the instrument panel in the cockpit that Rinko had indicated, there was a panel for injecting magic power. I heard that the magic cores taken from the dragon species are for storing magic power, and the injection panel is made by cutting out parts of a wooden golem with good magic power conductivity and coating them with magic core powder. There is no meter to indicate the filling rate, so it is judged by the glowing state of the magic cores. It is a strange mixture of high-tech and low-tech, or rather visual reliance.

When I touched the panel, I felt as if my magic power was being slightly sucked out. I felt like I was giving blood.

“If you feel sick, let me know immediately.

“More and more like giving blood.

Within an hour, the seven magic cores were in a luminous state. I don’t feel particularly tired or exhausted. I think my magic power level is increasing as well. I haven’t checked my status lately, and I don’t want to since it doesn’t mean much.

“Umu. Your ability cannot be measured by numbers.”

Oh, thank you, Myrril. But I feel like I’m being consoled for the shoddiness of my parameters, and that’s hard to take.

“How far have we flown?”

The old man Heimann looks up next to Rinko, who is piloting the plane. He seemed to be the navigator as he entered the values on the instrument panel into a map.

“At cruising speed, that’s about an hour. That’s a little over three hundred miles, roughly.”

A tick is about two hours. A little more than three hundred… means a little less than five hundred kilometers. If the total distance is 7,000 kilometers, the cruising speed is about 250 kilometers per hour, which means the rest of the way is…

Hey, wait a minute, 26 hours of flying!

“Rinko, what is the maximum speed at which this thing can fly safely?”

“About twice as fast as now. But the fuel consumption will be much worse, you know?”

“I can add more fuel. If it continued to fly at 500 kilometers per hour, what would be the risk?”

“Other than the economy, I don’t see any risks. If we use magic power for propulsion and to strengthen the aircraft, we can go faster than the speed of sound.”

“That is a theoretical value. I wouldn’t do a limit test with a full load of passengers.”

After testing various speeds and altitudes, it was decided that the maximum safe speed was about 400 kilometers per hour using magic power. Subtracting the amount of progress made during that time, it would take 15 to 16 hours to reach the southern territory of the Republic. We would arrive there in the morning.

The feeling of flying changed a bit with the increase in speed and altitude. The sound of the engine revolutions increased, and the relaxed, leisurely feeling disappeared. The feeling of being in an airplane in my former world was similar, with slight shaking and vibrations, but not to the point of being uncomfortable. Well, it is an airplane.

“I’ve been wondering about that for a long time.”

Myrril, who had been looking out the window, looked back at Rinko and the others.

“What is it?”

“This… “Ekura no Puran” must have been made in Casemaian, right? How did it end up in the sea?”

That’s right. The shortest distance from Casemaian, which is inland, to the sea is several hundred kilometers. And, well, I guess the ground effect would allow them to take off from the snow, but I can’t think of a long, flat surface where they could take off and land. The north is a dark forest, the flat land in front of the canyon would be developed and lined with buildings, and the east, west, and south are just city streets barely wide enough for the wingspan, and even there, there’s a forest on both sides.

“As expected, there is no other way to get around except by flying, right?”

“Ah, yes. That’s right, isn’t it?”

Rinko and old man Heimann looked at each other with suspicious movements and old man Carretta shook his head in dismay at the rear operating console.

“It flew, or rather fell. From the airship.”

“”Eh?””

“The test flight was supposed to take place in the spring. But when I temporarily assembled the parts in a hanger I had built on a flat field, the finished product was better than I had expected, so I got into the swing of things and… found myself finishing it.”

“It was good to put it all together, but the parts were in the wrong order.”

Old man Heimann scratches his head in embarrassment. What is the order?

“No, there’s an imperial harbor north of the Dark Forest, isn’t there?”

“Oh… that thing where the Republic was taken over by the Imperial Kingdom?”

“Yes, that. We were supposed to take it in the spring, build a maintenance facility, and then assemble the planes and test fly them.”

“But we haven’t made any progress yet, and now only the fuselage has been completed. And the hangar was just a place to put the small vehicles and parts.”

Old man Carretta took over Rinko and old man Heimann’s confession.

“We can’t get them out of the warehouse.”

“What are you doing there?”

I remember an old novel about this. Was it called “Sanshouo”? The one where the fish lives in a small place and grows up and can’t get out.

“So what happened to it?”

“What do you mean, we took it apart and put it back together again?”

“To make it stronger, I applied some kind of bioadhesive… glue or healing magic to make it all one piece.”

“That’s not good! What’s going on? I couldn’t believe it.”

“We took the roof off and put it in an airship.”

…Stupid. So that’s what you mean when you say “dropped it”?

“So I went out to sea for a test flight, and then Yoshua asked me to pick you up. I thought it would be a good time, so I took the opportunity.”

You weren’t doing a test flight; you were just recovering from a failure. Well, it was a nice thing to do.

“So even if we went back there, we couldn’t go back to Casemaian.”

“I thought Yoshua could keep it for me.”

“Yeah, sure. Okay.”

“You’re more reckless than I thought.”

The prince and the others listening in the background tilted their heads, not knowing whether to laugh or not.

“Well, that’s okay. It turns out all right in the end, doesn’t it?”

“Oh, so that’s the word you use for things like that.”

I don’t think so.
