Chapter 284 – War
The Griffon roared across the snowy plains at full throttle. Even I knew I was doing something crazy. When I think he’s getting in too deep, I dismiss him with a mature look and then reach out for him again because the boy is in danger all by himself. I am full of contradictions all the time.
This is an intervention in a bilateral war between the Empire and the Republic, isn’t it? Well, maybe there’s nothing to interfere with if you defeat that bug-like golem. But you see, they have to defend themselves… or rather, they have a conflict like we have in the Self-Defense Forces.
“We failed!”
Myrril raises her animated voice from the gun emplacement.
“We heard his name! Now he’s no longer ‘just someone’!”
The laughing bullet hit something in the distance, splattering blood and flesh.
But I think that’s the point. I… we were just looking for a reason. I don’t want anyone within my reach to get hurt. But maybe it was for our own convenience, not to feel guilty after the catastrophic result. I don’t care about others. I just want to live happily with Myrril but don’t want to carry a strange burden.
That’s the extent of it from the very beginning. Ever since I refused to say goodbye to Myrril in Casemaian, it’s always been like this.
“Ah, this is the work of the demon king as well! Now that you have become my queen, I want you to shoulder it with me!”
I laugh and open myself to the world again. I let out a puff of snow and accelerated the Griffon even faster.
“Puhahaha! That’s my Demon King! Here come the small fries!”
I saw about a dozen groups of black-robed men covered in a bluish-white light that seemed to be a magical barrier rushing toward us. They were flying over the snow at high speed with only short sticks in their hands that looked like magic wands. Their low posture was like that of a thunderbolt aimed at a naval ship.
“Good Myrril, let them reap what they sow!”
“Oh!”
The mages scattering and coming toward us spray blood in the air, and when they crash, they spray plumes of snow and vermilion around us. No one is frightened by the death of their comrades as if they were prepared for it.
The 7.62 millimeter NATO rounds, fired from close range, shoot steadily through the body, and the enemy attack force instantly rolls onto the snowfield in a pitiful heap of corpses.
“Hjelmar!”
Hearing my call from the window, a child elf jumps out of the shadows of the forest and flies toward us. The enemy mages chasing after him fired light and flame bullets at him, but the self-proclaimed “prodigy of the Magic Academic District” deftly dodged them and returned fire at several of them. But he was outnumbered. The mages, relying on their numbers, had their shields block Hjelmar’s attacks, and they jumped on him one by one, toying with him in formation. Just when it looked like they might be able to get a handle on him, the mage was knocked down in a beehive.
“What are you waiting for? Come quickly!”
The pursuers seemed to have finally noticed our presence. The men who tried to attack us were shot down, and some of those who tried to shield themselves were killed by Myrrill’s bullets.
“W-what is this? I didn’t ask for your help!”
Hjelmar, who had landed on the side deck, pulled at his legs and stood up. From the gun emplacement, we heard Myrril’s dismayed voice.
“You’re not very convincing, even when you say it while snotting profusely.”
“I-I’m not snotting!”
The child elf, Hjelmar, stomped on the ground and blew his nose with the edge of his cloak. He was snotting.
“Well, that’s okay. It’s a bit of a dead end. But we will send you on your way.”
“Send me?”
“To the capital, The Hagway, via Keol, the Western Territories. Miss Ecla has asked us to do this for her.”
“E-Ecla…? The witch of Sarz?”
The truth is, we weren’t asked to do this, but it’s a bit of a hassle, so we’ll just leave it at that. When it comes to troublesome matters that seem to have nothing to do with business, it is better to involve a large number of people so that the outcome will be ambiguous and it will be easier to evade responsibility. This is the wisdom of working people cultivated in black companies.
As I circled the perimeter to check for any remaining enemies, I noticed that my communicator was beeping.
“Yes, this is Yoshua.”
“Oh, sorry if you’re in the middle of something. Are you alright?”
“Yes, Ecla-san. What a rumor to spread. We’re fine.”
“Of course you are. I want to ask you about Hjelmar Markis.”
Behind me, the little elf took a small gasp.
“U-uh… Yes. I am safe! I’m sorry I make you worry!”
What’s with the awestruck good boy comment? He’s standing upright, but no picture is being sent to me.
“Oh Hjelmar, stop looking for the devil or the little devil and come back here. I’ve got the old guys in the magic cave all worked up.”
“No, yes. Uh… Seguslinkov is hiding in Casemaian.”
“I know. I met her in the Southern Territories.”
“Huh.”
“Whether she is kidnapped or sheltered, that girl is running around free. So free that she even flew to the southern continent. Didn’t the demon king there tell you that?”
The little elf looks at me angrily, but it is not for me to say such things. I don’t know anything about witch trials or devil hunts, but I haven’t heard of Ecla-san being involved in any of them.
“Ecla-dono, is Rinko involved in this invasion?”
“It seems so. I think it’s likely that the Empire’s exclusive observers and sleeper agents released into the Republic saw Linkov in contact with you and your men and tried to recapture her.”
“Ecla-san, I understand stalkers, but what about sleepers?”
“An Imperial informant living as a Republic citizen. It’s a complicated story. Most of them have been found and dealt with, but there are still some remnants.”
It’s a bit of a wild story, but in short, it looks like we’ve done it again (as it turns out).
“We took out some of the Imperial mages that invaded, but…”
“I took out twenty-three.
“And I took out seven of them.”
“Thirty, huh? Half of them are still missing, or more than 70% if you include the mages of the Casemaian invasion force. I want all cities on alert.”
“That doesn’t seem to be enough. I’m sorry, but could you join me in Keol?”
Not too vigilant, huh? I could tell from Ecla-san’s tone that she wasn’t talking about the fact that it had been resolved without incident.
“It’s occupied, isn’t it?”
“Yeah. It looks like we lost contact with Kilgerai after the last distress signal from Keol, I guess.”
