Chapter 295 – The Demon King Awakens! (Nothing Happened, But…)
It took about three days for the fever to go down. It was several days before I was able to go outside. It was just a cold, but I think it was more serious than I thought.
Myrril-san stayed with me and nursed me, but she never got infected because she had confidence in herself. I guess the way she was trained was different.
“Thanks, Myrril, I’m fine now.”
“Umu. You look better and have a good appetite.”
We ate breakfast brought by room service. The breakfast consisted of crepe dough, soup, grilled tender beast meat, and hot vegetables. Everything was beautifully presented and tasted quite good, but I missed the breakfast at the Wolf’s Tail Pavilion. It was too elegant and not satisfying enough for me.
“It’s not bad, but it doesn’t have that Wolf’s Tail feeling of becoming part of your own flesh and blood.”
“Yes, it does. How is it different?”
“The Central Territory lacks the magical power of earth and water compared to the Southern Territory.”
“Huh?”
“You see, it is said that the earth and water have magic in them.”
“Ah, external magic, right?”
“Yes. The grass and beasts that grow by absorbing the magic power are weak in the land where there is not enough magic power.”
I see. Even in my former world, I heard many stories about how the food in the countryside had stronger tastes and flavors. I don’t know if it was magic or not.
Anyway, I finished my meal. The tea after the meal was not herbal tea but tea leaves, as you would expect in a luxury hotel. Is it imported from the south or produced in the Republic? I will ask later when I remember.
Here, I finally had enough time to just look around. The high-class hotel suite-like inn seems to be a Council-appointed place with great service and food, but I’m sure the pay for it is also great. When I mentioned this, Myrril shook her head.
“McKin-dono was pleased. He said he could finally return the favor a little.”
“I see.”
It’s not good to owe too much, is it? I’ll have to think of a way to make up for it sometime in the future since we’re going to continue our relationship.
“How are the refugees in the Western Territories?”
“They are safe. They are now in the custody of the Central Territories, along with the thousands of residents Ecla-dono sent here with her transfer magic. The Council will take care of them from the restoration of the city until their return.”
I thought this was a very generous thing to say to another territory, but then I remembered what Lord McKin had told me.
“I see. I thought they were going to merge.”
“The western and central regions will be merged and called ‘Inland Territories’ or something like that. The role of the cities and their inhabitants will change accordingly, and it is fortunate for the Council that the inhabitants of the Western Territories can be relocated now.”
The Imperial rebels have taken over the evacuation and relocation capabilities. It will also serve as a bargaining chip with the main Imperial army led by the Emperor.
“Isn’t this all very convenient for the Republic? I wonder if that golem squad and those mages really didn’t have a political agenda.”
“You’re saying they were manipulated by the Republic, aren’t you? I don’t think so.”
Ara, Myrril-san, you are more assertive than I expected.
“Did you find out anything while I was asleep?”
“I gave them the bodies you took out.”
Did I do that? I was in a daze while I was recovering, so I barely remember. I think I might have handed them over. But I also feel like I’m imagining things.
“They were, to put it simply, a reserve unit of the mounted golem squad that had attacked the Casemaian.”
“A reserve unit?”
“Yes. They are made up of recruits in training, sick and wounded soldiers to manage them, and retired soldiers to lead them.”
“Is the goal to take revenge on the Casemaian?”
“To be precise, it is to retaliate against the Demon King. I heard that the commander of the invasion force was a popular, brave man who had fought many battles.”
I remember him. A commander who was a good fighter. In the end, he blew himself up in front of me.
“I heard that he had an unprecedented rise to power as the youngest son of a low-ranking nobleman in the Empire’s hierarchical society. I heard that he was looked upon as a decoration by the high nobles and sent to the front lines as a pawn.”
If I had been the same person before, I would have felt guilty, but my heart was calm. I had fought fair and square and won. I respected them as strong opponents, but I had nothing to feel guilty about.
“They were great, weren’t they?”
“Yes, they were. They were more fearsome than the 30,000 troops of the Kingdom.”
Maybe a hard-boiled man would have offered a cup of whiskey. But I can’t drink it.
“Oh, yes. I have to get the Griffon. Uh… the merchant guild is taking care of it, right?”
“Yes, they are. I’ve seen Loringen visit you a few times. He said he would come back when you were still unable to get up.”
Well, now that I’m feeling better, I think I’ll go out for a while.
“There’s a change of clothes over there. Your old ones were stained and torn, so McKin-dono gave you a new set.”
Folded and spread out on the floor was a loose-fitting, plain cloak worn by the merchants of the Republic. The fabric is soft and comfortable. I know it tastes better than the villager’s or adventurer’s clothes I used to wear, but at the same time, I feel uncomfortable in them. There is something formal about them.
“Are they trying to do this in a formal setting?”
“I think so. I think that’s the case with Loringen-dono, McKin-dono, and maybe even Ecla-dono. What awaits you is an invitation to join the Council.”
“I don’t want it!”
