Chapter 317 – The Falling Girl
“Keep going straight. Make a slight left there.”
“Roger.”
I trust Mirill’s navigation and move the APC forward. The sideways blizzard means there is almost no visibility. Even if we follow the running Wau, he is covered in white fur and cannot be seen in the blizzard. Myrril seems to pick up Wau’s footprints, but the unevenness of the ground is not clear to my eyes.
“Stop.”
“Is it an enemy?”
“It’s Wau. He’s on the lookout for something.”
There’s a small pile of snow where Myrril pointed with her finger. It took me a few minutes to realize that the white thing that looked like a small pile of snow was actually Wau lying down. He looked back at us and gave us a look that seemed to say, “Stay out of the way,” or something like that.
“Joshua, I’m sorry to ask you to be a decoy. Can you go around and bring ‘Kyasupa’ forward?”
“Roger.”
We bypassed the area where Wau was and advanced to the position designated by Nojaloli-san, waiting for the enemy to make their move. Even if we were to act as a decoy, the Imperial Army’s weapons wouldn’t be able to even scratch Casspir’s armor.
Considering where Wau was hiding, there must be enemies or targets to be wary of a little further ahead than where we are now. We don’t know what kind of enemies they are. We can’t even see a few meters ahead, blocked by the thick curtain of snow.
“Something’s coming.”
A group of barbarian-looking people in fur coats appeared as if they were pushing through the blizzard. In their hands were swords with blades about a meter long. They didn’t seem to be beastmen, but their equipment, clothing, and atmosphere were different from the Imperial Army.
“What are those things?”
“Uwaa… aau!”
“Yoshua, retreat at full speed!”
I didn’t understand why we needed to take emergency evasive action against enemies with sword-like weapons, but for now, I just followed her instructions and retreated. After retreating about ten meters, I stopped as she indicated with a hand gesture. She pressed her face against the windshield and kept a lookout above us.
“Wau, au!”
“I don’t understand! Sorry, Yoshua, could you come with me?”
Myrril pulled me out of the driver’s seat and made me stand on the roof of the gun emplacement.
“What did Wau say?”
“Those waiting out front were the ethnic minorities of the Empire being used as bait. The Imperial Army is stationed around them, but it doesn’t matter. The one circling the sky right now is Nonya, it seems.”
“That girl can’t fly… Wait, are you joking?”
“It’s not that she can’t fly, she’s just been tied up with a collar and not allowed to fly.”
So what can she do now? A girl from the Winged Tribe with no means of communication can’t do any reconnaissance. She’s probably been ordered to use the collar as a bomb and run towards us.
I look up to the sky, but the blowing snow makes it impossible to see anything. The gusts of wind are blowing me around, and I feel like I’m about to be blown off the roof of Casspir.
“Yoshua!”
Myrril pointed to the sky, but I couldn’t see anything. I thought I saw the outstretched wings for a moment as something small made a sharp turn, but it soon disappeared in the wind and snow. I read the trajectory of the thing that appeared from that moment on and waited for it, but I couldn’t see it anywhere. It appeared from an unexpected direction, crossed over my head, and flew off in an unexpected direction.
“Is this a retreat maneuver? Could it be that it’s trying to avoid being shot down?”
“If they’ve seen how we fight, they might think that. But we don’t want to shoot Nonya.”
“Of course not.”
“Please, Yoshua, take off that collar before she gets too close to us!”
Even if you say “that collar,” I’m in trouble. The descent speed is too fast, and I can’t see the flying girl herself, let alone the collar. It’s like a living rocket, with its incredible speed and agility. I aim at the shadow as it flies away, trying to catch it at random, and after about the fifth or sixth time, I get an answer.
“Got it!”
As we passed each other, I felt like I made eye contact with the Winged Tribe girl. Had she figured out my position, or was she checking to see if I was unarmed? As Nonya’s trajectory rose at a sharp angle, my bad premonition turned to certainty.
She’s about to make a vertical dive after turning at a high altitude. The girl’s body as she falls is a literal suicide dive. There is not the slightest thought of pulling her back.
“Wau, catch her!”
“Wau!”
The giant body leaps up and grabs the fallen winged girl in his mouth. He must be controlling the force, but it looks like she’s been eaten.
“”””Ohhhhhh…””””
Spewing a red light of fury, Myrril pulls a PKM out of the vehicle. Standing on top of the gun emplacement, she sweeps away the Imperial Army soldiers rushing toward us with small arms fire before they can get close. The fact that she chose the PKM, which uses standard rifle ammo, rather than the RPK, which uses assault rifle ammo, shows that she was determined not to let the mages and heavy infantry waiting in the background live.
As soon as she emerged from the snow, she rolled around in the snowfield, spraying blood, flesh, and entrails everywhere, and the Imperial Army’s assault troops were wiped out in less than two minutes.
“Could the mages have cast healing magic?”
“If they could, they should have tried.”
As I pushed Casspir forward, I realized the meaning of Myrril’s words. The group of mages had been shot right through the front of their heads.
“””O-ooh…? Oh…!”””
“What is that?”
I was stunned as I stepped down from Casspir and examined the enemy camp. The mages were all lying on their knees in the snow, half of their brains spilling out, shaking their heads in a way that looked like they were crying, either from pain or confusion.
It’s probably because the extreme cold suppresses the flow of blood, but the way they look like they’ve been left to die during open-head surgery makes you wonder how they’re still alive. This state can’t last for long, and they all collapse one by one, breathing out small gasps and then falling silent.
“The only one left is you.”
In the depths of the enemy camp, there was a commander who was trembling with fear. He was the only one wearing a different-colored cloak. He was a fat man who seemed more accustomed to lounging behind the front lines than fighting in battle, with a sword at his waist and a medal hanging from his belt.
“I let you live, and you know what that means, don’t you?”
The fat Commander looked at me and Myrril as I approached, his eyes darting around. He was probably looking for the mage who was supposed to detonate Nonya’s collar.
“W-why hasn’t it detonated yet!
“Why don’t you look for yourself?”
I take the collar out of the storage behind the Commander. After a moment, the explosion occurs, the back of his head is blown off, and he is thrown forward.
“Muaaah!”
The Commander looks up and shakes his head violently. I stop myself from pointing my gun at him, who is showing signs of resistance. I want to get some information. As I step forward to kick him in the chin, the fat guy falls to his knees and cries out, begging for forgiveness.
“I-I surrender! I-I will tell you everything! So please stop!”
We hadn’t done anything to hurt or attack him. Myrril and I looked at each other and shook our heads.
“Is it common for the commanders of the Imperial Army to be incompetent and shameless?”
“The only person we were able to fight properly was the commander of the mounted golem troops that invaded Casemaian.”
When I turned around at the sound of something, the fat guy was farting and foaming at the mouth as he fainted.
