Chapter 320 – The Silence Trap
In the end, the beastmen vigilantes from the slums all came to pick up the children in the car. Whether they decided to trust us or were intimidated by Myrril’s fighting spirit, they were completely different and very quiet.
However, it seems that they don’t fully trust us, as they still carry weapons and keep their guard.
“Uu, wau!”
“It’s a wolf! Kessel, go get reinforcements!”
The werewolf youth who was about to run away is stopped by Myrril with a wave of her hand.
“Wait, don’t worry. He’s with us.”
“Wau?”
They seemed to think there was no danger when they saw that Wau, who had appeared from over the ridge, was wagging his tail without any sign of attacking them.
They looked suspiciously at Wau, who was walking slowly, carrying a girl from the Winged Tribe on his back. Nonya… she was sleeping happily, still clinging to Wau’s neck.
“Um… who is that on his back?”
“Looks like a friend.”
“A Snow White Wolf and a child of the Winged Tribe? It’s a monster, you know!”
“He’s friendly. He just got mad at the Imperial Army scum who tried to hurt the girl.”
“Is that what a Snow White Wolf is like?”
One of the werewolves asks, but the other vigilantes shake their heads as if to say, “How would we know?” Apparently, if you live a normal life, you don’t get a chance to see one.
“You did well, you’re okay now. Your friends have come to get you.”
Myrril opens the back door of Casspir and calls to the children. They look relieved when they see the vigilante group (I call them that, but I don’t know if they really are). They seem to know each other and have a relationship of mutual trust, so I am relieved.
“Where did you find these children?”
The Bear-beastman asks, so I tell him that I came in contact with them near the eastern border of the Republic. Even though they are Beastmen, it’s not a distance a child could travel on foot.
“They were kidnapped by the Imperial Army and forced to wear slave collars. They have been ordered to attack us. I’ll make sure that doesn’t happen again, but could you keep an eye on them for a while?”
“Y-yeah.”
After handing over the children, I call them. As I expected, I feel guilty for leaving them in this environment.
“Hey, why don’t you all come to Casemaian instead of living in a place like this?”
“Huh?”
“You might have a hard time getting used to it, but I won’t let you lack a place to live or food. If you need a ride, I’ll give you one, and of course, I won’t let the Imperial Army interfere. What do you say?”
“…Case…maian.”
The vigilantes look at each other and hang their heads in embarrassment. What’s with the fidgety reaction? Even those macho guys did it; I wouldn’t even flinch.
“…Did you really take back the country of the demi-humans?”
“I wonder how much you don’t trust us, and it starts there.”
Myrril says with an exasperated look.
“Well, that’s fine. Our business here should be finished by tonight. We can decide about the rest later.”
I beckoned to Wau, who was carrying Nonya, and introduced her to the guard. I handed the children the boxes of food and preserves I had promised them, along with a large bottle of mineral water.
“This is Wau. This winged person is Nonya. I’m sorry, but could you look after them until we get back? We’ll finish as soon as possible.”
“That’s fine, but what are you going to do?”
“Didn’t I tell you before?”
“…..!!”
“You’re not seriously going to kill the Emperor, are you?”
“There’s no such thing as ‘going to’──it’s a matter of course. Then I’m counting on you, okay?”
“Wau.”
“This is crazy. What can two people do?”
Whether he’s worried or just being kind, the Bear-beastman keeps trying to stop us and then holding back.
If he could, he’d stop us, but he must have remembered Myrril’s fighting spirit and understood that he has neither the power nor the right to stop us. Maybe he’s a serious, hardworking type like the Casemaian bear-beastman Bio.
“…Everything, that is.”
“Eh?”
“If it’s just the demon king and me, we can do anything.”
Seeing Myrril smile happily, the bear-beastman’s expression looks relieved.
I’m sorry, but this girl seems to be a bit overexcited. The young beastmen all look at us with wide eyes, but we don’t have time to explain right now, so let’s go.
I started up Casspir and returned to the main road from the side road from which we had strayed. While we descended the gentle slope and headed for the eastern gate, Myrril picked out the necessary equipment and put it on, then climbed up to the gun emplacement. The way she happily carried such a huge amount of weapons and ammunition was like a squirrel before hibernation.
“Myrril, are you ready?”
“I’m ready.”
It’s about 300 meters to the city gate. As usual, there is no sign of any preparations to intercept us. The gate is closed, but there are no guards posted to defend it, and there are no barricades.
It’s just a wooden gate, and it should be possible to break through it with Casper’s nose.
“Hmm, I sense a deliberate arrangement in the way they left the front open.”
An M79 grenade is fired with a bang. After a moment, a huge explosion occurs, and the area around the castle gate collapses with a rattle, engulfing part of the castle wall.
“They planted explosives in the gate. Not bad, the Imperial Army.”
“What are you so happy about?”
Myrril’s voice is full of energy. Casspir tramples over the rubble and enters the Imperial Capital. A straight, wide main street leads to the Imperial Palace. The street is about 15 meters wide. There is no sign of life on the street or in the buildings on either side. There are no soldiers waiting in the ambush, and nothing blocking the way.
“This is…”
“Of course it’s a trap.”
It’s a huge trap, one that took time and money to set up and probably cost the lives of many soldiers and civilians. It was created just to greet us, the Emperor’s last desperate attempt.
“The Emperor has no choice now. He’s no doubt mobilized all the troops he has left, including cavalry, infantry, assault mages, mounted golems, and bronze artillery.”
Myrril, who can sense things I can’t, tells me with a smile in her voice.
“They’re probably waiting for us to pass, lined up on both sides of the road.”
“So we’ll either crush them or cut through them.”
Myrril, who was at the gun emplacement, laughed out loud.
“Of course, we’ll charge at full speed! We’ll show that old fool and his servants the power of the Demon King!”
“Roger. Full speed ahead! Don’t let them shake you off!”
I rev the Casspir up to its full potential for the first time, something it hasn’t had a chance to test on anything but snowy roads. The 5.6-liter inline six-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine roars, and the 10-ton beast accelerates. No matter how hard it tried, this heavily armored vehicle couldn’t reach a top speed of 100 km/h, but in this world, it was an unexpected high-speed mobile unit. For the people waiting on the side road, ready to attack, a moving target would be, at most, the full speed of a cavalryman, around 40 to 50 km/h.
“…Wha-?!”
In the path of Casspir’s charge. Seeing a large number of arrows, attack magic, and cannonballs that were fired at different times, forming a deep arc from left to right, Myrril and I couldn’t help but shout in delight.
“Not bad, Imperial Army. You came at us head on!”
“What, our battle has just begun!””
That’s a great spirit, but please stop saying lines from a suddenly canceled manga, Myrril.
I turn the wheel in the direction of the thin barrage and dodge the attack. The bullets are fired from the gun emplacement like anti-aircraft machine guns, undeterred by the violent shaking and bouncing. It must choose the trajectory of the shells that will hit us. The falling shells explode in mid-air, and the wreckage of flames, smoke, arrows, and debris pours down and hits the vehicle.
“Myrril!”
“It’s okay, there’s nothing to worry about! Just keep going!”
I step on the gas at Myrril’s voice. The speedometer I glance at reads just over 80km/h, and the big tires bounce up mud and keep going. In this world, there is no method of attack that can stop an armored vehicle charging at top speed. There is no way.
“…No good! Yoshua, dodge!”
Foolishly, that’s what I thought.
