Chapter 322 – Vertical Battlefield
“There is a possibility. In fact, the means used so far and the silence of the city make it almost certain.”
In fact, thinking that they might have evacuated the city to another place is an excuse. I just wanted to believe that there is no such thing as an evil ruler.
“Do you remember the magic barrier that was set up when we visited before?”
“Yes. The inhabitants were given identifiers or something.”
“The reaction is gone. The detection magic that circulated at regular intervals has also disappeared. The mages must have stopped wasting magic power, or there are no low-level mages left.”
Who was it that went to such lengths to be summoned? Is it a hero, a sage, a saint, or something else? I don’t even know if it’s possible to choose. I’m sure the Emperor understands that many of these summoned people have been killed by us. I don’t think he would be sorry. Such an auspicious man would not use the same tactics he showed us.
“Those wooden dolls that remained motionless until the very end were either scouts or guards who told those waiting for us upstairs.”
They risked their lives to relay information to the summoners waiting upstairs. Or they are decoys to thwart the attack. Either way, they are pawns.
“I don’t know if it’s true or not, but I’ve heard that you can summon as many high-ranking people as the number of sacrifices you spend.”
“But… how many people live in the capital?”
“If it were all of them, it would be tens of thousands.”
If you pay such a high price, maybe legendary heroes will come down, not Japanese company employees or job-hunting students. But… it doesn’t make sense to me.
“I still understand the intention, although I think it is the lowest of the low to use subjects as sacrificial offerings. But why did they leave the slums?”
“I think it’s because their magic power is useless.”
“Hmm? Is that so? Beastmen and dwarves would have more magic power than the average human. Among the children we picked up, there were some elves who seemed to have even more abundant magic power.”
“The reason they were not useful was not because of their qualities, but because of the people’s aversion to them. They call them ‘impure’ or something like that.”
“Huh?”
“The idiots in the Imperial Court think that demi-humans are no better or worse than magical beasts as living beings. I guess they can’t back down now that they’ve suffered such a crushing defeat… but I doubt they’re still saying that they can’t use their impure magic at this time.”
“Nonsense. Well, I’m glad about that.”
“Six on the far right and four by the stairs.”
Myrril whispered, and we split to two sides of the corridor. I shot them with my AKM, and Myrril shot them with her pistol right through the eyeballs of the four who had peeked out to look at us.
“They’re coming from both sides of the hall.”
The door was kicked open, and nearly ten heavily armed infantrymen, one on each side, rushed in with spears in their arms. The AKM 7.62 millimeter rounds fired at them pierced the chest armor of the heavily armored men. By the time the bodies of the seven men I was responsible for rolled down the corridor with a deafening roar, Myrril’s side had also been cleared.
“Threat elimination.”
Myrril, a skilled marksman who could handle more than a dozen people, had just changed her first PPSh mag. I reached out and took the empty mag.
“Looks like we’re finally running out of ammo.”
As I approached to check, I saw a mix of corpses that looked more like civilian officers than soldiers. The strong soldiers had either been used up and exhausted or had been assigned to other duties elsewhere.
“There’s one hiding at the top of the stairs.”
As we climbed the stairs, covering each other, we heard footsteps fleeing, sensing our presence. They were heavy and slow, without the metallic sound of armor. Myrril looked out from the landing and added a barrage of shots, and there was a fat man rolling with a scream.
“Eek!”
From the way Nojaloli-san shook her head, it seemed the fat man had not been hit by the bullet. Or maybe she missed him on purpose.
“Let him lead us to the mastermind.”
“That’s a good idea.”
Myrril and I followed the fleeing commander down the stairs. Three floors up, we hear footsteps coming down the hall. This is a hit.
“Help us, heroes!”
I knew it. The summoning is done, and the new heroes are waiting for us. I look at Myrril, but her expression is unchanged. It’s not over until we kill the Emperor, and I assume there will be interference and guards.
“The Demon King, Casemaian…”
The scream-like cry was drowned out by the sound of the explosion. The sound of blood and pieces of flesh splattering and dripping can be heard.
“…Yoshua, that sound.”
I nod, and the color of Myrril’s face changes.
“…Was it Kureimoa?” [T/n: Claymore]
I looked down the corridor. The explosion was not caused by gunpowder. If it had been a weapon based on Rinko’s technology, the narrow, unventilated corridor would have been filled with smoke by now, but all that wafted out was a faint white smoke and the familiar, somewhat sweet smell of gunpowder smoke.
“Yeah, probably.”
It was really depressing. Suddenly, a small metallic sound echoed in the distance. It sounded like the first bullet being fed into the chamber. Just enough reason and space not to move immediately. A silent communication.
I wondered what to do. I should have expected that a time like this would come, even if it would not have helped.
“I think what is waiting for us ahead are… soldiers from my former world.”
