Chapter 337 – Trail Train
Outside the slum, we help the Casemaian resettlement group get ready. The Ural military truck driven by Yadar had barely room in the container when it was loaded with the 32 residents, but we loaded it with as many necessities as possible.
“I didn’t realize how much progress had been made.
The interior of the container, which had previously been bare metal, was now lined with panels, and cushions and fur rugs had been placed inside. Many of the people involved had experienced long periods of displacement as refugees themselves, so it was clear that they were trying to make the refugees’ lives as comfortable as possible.
Yadar and Minya are in charge of the refugees, who are mostly middle-aged and elderly, so they check their health and the environment inside the container. They asked that the interior be insulated, but because it cannot be completely sealed, some outside air gets in. There is no heating, so it is cold inside the container. They ask the two elderly people to sit in the front seats and the rest of the people to use sleeping bags and blankets.
“I think it’s going to be like this, but are you sure you’ll be okay?”
“Don’t worry about us, Myrril. We’ll be in Casemaian by tonight, and we’ll also take a few breaks along the way.”
“We can use the same road on the way back. It should be a little easier for Yadar and the passengers.”
I’ve only been here when it wasn’t snowing, but apparently, it’s quite a challenge to travel the road between Casemaian and the Imperial Capital when it’s covered in snow.
“I used to take the ‘Exal’ to get around easily, so I underestimated it. There’s no windbreak, so snow drifts form and bury you, and if you’re not careful, you can lose your way.”
“Thanks to this, Yadar’s driving has improved a lot. Her personality has also become more careful. This is progress.”
Minya also says this as if it were someone else’s problem, but after a while, I feel that she has become calmer and more composed.
“Yoshua is sending the Republic immigration group, right? What are you going to do?”
“That’s the thing.”
“What are we going to do?”
Twenty-two people, so we need the hovercraft Griffon… no, there’s no other choice at the moment. Casspir is broken. However, the route we took to get here was a narrow, winding road, best traveled by motorcycle. The Griffon’s huge body wouldn’t fit through it. If we want to choose a route that we can pass through… we can either go out to sea from the harbor on the north side or go south to near Casemaian and then turn east to cross the ‘Wilderness Between.’
“Both of those are going to be a really long way.”
The old dwarf couldn’t stand to see me thinking so hard, so he came up to me and spoke.
“Your Majesty, if you need a vehicle, I can prepare a horse-drawn sleigh for you.”
“That would be very kind, but I wonder if there are any horses or other creatures that can pull a sleigh.”
“That’s right, it might be difficult. It seems that the Imperial Army has taken all the horses, so even if there are any left, they’re probably old or farm horses that can’t stand military service.”
So we have sleighs. Is there any way we can make it? If we want to carry twenty-two people, we need four or five sleighs, and it’s impossible to pull them with Ural motorcycles. What else…
“Oh?”
Myrril and I looked at each other and pointed, having had the same idea.
“”Hyaaaaaahh~♪””
I was in the Golem’s cockpit, listening to the children’s cheers.
“It looks like there’s no problem. The kids are really happy.”
Myrril, who was riding on my shoulders, turned and told me. We’ve connected the several horse-drawn sleighs together to form a train. If there are no horses, we can just have the riding golems pull it. We have to be careful with the acceleration and deceleration so that we don’t crash, but it’s easy. I don’t have much physical strength, but I have a decent amount of magic power. I think we can make it to the Republic.
“”Hahaha…!””
This method seems to be popular among children.
With our preparations complete, we wave to the truck drivers and head for the Republic. Our destination is the capital city of Hagwai.
Chapter 338 – Ailbe Park
At first, I thought it was a good idea.
In fact, it was fine until we hit the mountain trail. We pulled the hitched-up sleds with the riding golems and went back the same way we came from the Republic to the Imperial Capital. It was easy to say, but when we actually tried it, it was quite difficult.
In the end, the 22 refugees could be divided into three horse-drawn sleighs, partly because there were many children and small women among them. We had expected four or five sleds, so they should have been lighter, but even so, when they were tied together, they would bump into each other when accelerating or decelerating on slopes or get caught in curves. The sleds have brakes (the kind you stick a pole into the ground), but there are no handles, and basically, you can only control them from the pulling side.
“A little more to the right. Okay, keep going… Can you turn left at that tree over there?”
“Demon King, Utra fell down!”
“Go and pick him up!”
The restless little kids were placed on a high-rimmed freight sled for safety, but even so, when they got bored, they would lean forward to look at the scenery and almost roll over on the curves. Most of the children and adults riding on the sled were beastmen with excellent reflexes and athletic abilities, so they would catch each other and run back to the sled if they fell, but why didn’t they just stop falling in the first place?
“Demon King, I have to pee!”
You guys are really something. Just two days ago, you were all looking at me with trepidation, but you’ve all become familiar with me very quickly. Maybe that’s a good thing.
In the end, twelve of the seventeen children became members of the Republic. The bear-beastman Sokron, the wolf-beastmen Mai and Keitel, the tiger-beastman Koff, the dwarf Kaina, the elves Lou and Jenna, and the two who look like kittens, Piera and Utra, are all lion-beastmen, according to Myrril. The number of children held by the Imperial Army has risen to nine, as the wolf-beastmen children Okuru and Chosha have joined the Casemaian group. Also new are Kaina’s baby sister, Sokron’s baby sister, and Piera’s older brother.
The adults are Mai’s older sister, Lou’s aunt (who is an elf, so looking at her, there does not seem to be much of an age difference between her and her nephew Lou), Koff, Kaina, and Jenna, each have their own parents, and Utra’s mother and grandmother.
There are twelve children and infants and ten adults. Although there are fewer than in the Casemaian group, it is still a large family.
The only ones who might be able to help in a fight are Koff’s father, who is a tiger beastman, and Kaina’s father, who is a dwarf. Jenna’s father is a slim, scholarly, vegetarian elf who seems to have little or no offensive ability, either with a bow or with magic.
“I hope nothing happens until we get to Hagwai.”
“But that’s even more of a problem. We won’t be able to cross the mountain by nightfall.”
I remember the whole trip on the way there and nod in agreement. The sun is starting to set, but we’re not even halfway there yet.
“Let’s set up camp early to be on the safe side.”
Of course, we don’t have any snow caves or tents, so it would be a waste of effort, so we’ll sleep in the car, in Casspir and Griffon.
“Sokron, Mai, Keitel, roll call!”
“Yes!”
Among the children, we asked the relatively older and more mature bear-beastman Sokron and the wolf-beastmen Mai and Keitel to check the personnel on each sled. Even if they are fluffy beastmen, if they are left behind on a winter mountain without noticing that someone has fallen off, their lives are in danger.
“Sled 1, 6 people, no problem.”
“Sled 2, 7 people, all here.”
“The third sled has nine people on it, all safe and sound.”
“Good, you three have all done a good job.”
As a reward, I give the three “older siblings” a big bag of sweets. Of course, it’s not just for them. I tell them to share it with everyone after dinner.
“Yoshua, what about that flat area over there? The trees will provide some shelter from the wind, and we should be able to see anyone approaching.”
Unlike me, who thought that any place where there wasn’t a risk of falling was fine, Myrril was also worried about the approach of hostile forces and dangerous creatures. Hmm, I wonder why I was so relaxed.
“Is it possible that the remnants of the Imperial Army are following us?”
“No, I don’t think so. What worries me more are the signs of the beasts. There are scratches and bite marks everywhere.”
I had assumed that they were humans. Even if it wasn’t soldiers attacking us, I wasn’t sure if I should be relieved or not.
“Do you know what kind of beast it is?”
“I don’t know, but look.”
Myrril points to a nearby tree. There are scratches on the bark as if it had been torn off. It is at least two meters high.
“Wow, that’s a huge beast!”
“It looks like it. We should put the refugees on the ‘Kyasupia’ for the night.”
We’ll heat up some water in the cauldron, heat up some canned food, retort pouches’ food, and then distribute them with the bread. It looks like we’re going to skimp on dinner again, just like last night.
“There seem to be some big animals around, so we can’t do anything fancy for safety reasons. Sorry, but please bear with us. We’ll have something nice to eat when we get to town.”
“Demon King, this is delicious, isn’t it?”
“The meat is delicious.”
Oh, the children were trying to help us… but it looked like they were just munching away with satisfaction. After enjoying the sweets after the meal, the little ones looked sleepy.
“Mao… I’m sleepy.”
“Oh, go sleep in the vehicle over there. It’s safe there. There are blankets and sleeping bags.”
The rear axle is bent, so we can’t drive, but the body of the armored car won’t move even if attacked by animals. I’ve told the kids many times on the way here, but I’ll explain the safety of the vehicle to everyone again. Before the sun sets, everyone climbs into the vehicle, and even though it’s a little cramped in the back, they don’t seem to mind and fall asleep curled up.
“Do we need a night watchman?”
“It’s probably better to have one, just in case. But if we take turns sleeping, it shouldn’t be a problem with the women, children, and old people.”
We let the Golem lean against Casspir’s shadow and spend the night in the cockpit. There’s no air conditioning, but the insulation is adequate, so we won’t freeze to death.
“You should get some sleep first. Most pesky things are nocturnal if they’re beasts without magic cores.”
While she gave me a flag-like explanation that didn’t really make sense, Myrril wrapped me in a blanket.
