Chapter 340 – Steel Deer Repellent

“Yoshua, I’ll get off and act as a distraction and support attacker. You can leave it to me, Keipivui, and the redhead.”

I thought she might come with me, but I guess not when it comes to fighting a giant monster. It looks like it would be hard to hold on to the back of the seat and not get thrown around. She definitely wouldn’t be able to stay on top of the golem.

“I’ll be watching the battle from the front row, so go ahead and fight to your heart’s content.”

“Understood.”

I put Myrril and the KPV heavy machine guns behind Casspir and handed her a box of ammunition. It’s a belted 40-round 14.5 x 114mm cartridge. The only thing red is the tip of the warhead, an incendiary armor-piercing round.

“Promise me one thing. If it comes down to it, you’ll put yourself first.”

“Yes. If I die, it will be with you.”

The answer, with its slightly different nuance, felt like a dodge, but it was also a hook. I can’t see a future where “Noja Rambo” is defeated by a deer. I wanted to believe it would be okay, and for her safety, I had to end it quickly.

“Wait for me, I’ll finish it soon.”

Myrril looks at me and nods, looking satisfied.

“I’m looking forward to it.”

I return to the cockpit of the golem and think about my position in the darkness. I’m at a disadvantage in the open against a four-legged beast with superior mobility. On the other hand, if this place is too complicated, I won’t be able to use my weapons.

“Bumooooooo…!”

The deer shakes its antlers, threatening us. It seems to recognize me, or at least the golem, as its enemy. I don’t remember anything against it.

“Did I just disturb your territory?”

I didn’t see it on the way here, so it doesn’t seem to be stationed here. In any case, there’s no way to avoid a fight. Technically, there is, but considering the various circumstances, there isn’t.

The opponent is a monster with thick skin like a light armored vehicle, long hair covering its body, and huge, thick, strong horns. By my standards, it’s definitely not a deer.

The golem’s weapons are a magic circle that creates a magic barrier on its left arm and an internal pile driver. It also has one on its right arm. I replaced the three-meter-class one that Rinko had as standard equipment with one that was one size larger than the one the Imperial Army Golem had. I guess I figured that it needed the power of a single strike rather than speed or the number of strikes.

“…Oh?”

Seeing the charging speed with which it closed the distance in an instant, I regret having made the wrong choice in battle strategy.

I flip up the monitor and remove it, then close the boarding hatch of the mounted golem. The area around me is shrouded in darkness, but I can’t concentrate on the battle with such a blurry green view. At least the resolution of the monitor is quite high.

I sweep the stick horizontally with the momentum of my whole body to face the huge body that is approaching me. The charging deer didn’t even try to avoid it but tilted its head and put its shoulder in to deflect it with its huge antlers.

A metallic sound rises with the violent impact… what is that material? A metallic sound coming from the antlers? That’s strange. The deer and the golem were equal in weight, and we deflected each other and stayed in place. I swung my flail back and swung it across the ground. I swung it up and down, left and right, smashing it with all my might.

“This guy takes it easy…”

It parried it with ease as if it were a kendo master even though it was a deer, and then it swung its horns to deal with the flail while pushing forward, one step at a time. It used its antlers to fend off the golem, which was slightly taller than it, and then moved out of range as it swung full force. The deer lowered its head, lowering its center of gravity with enough force to knock me off my feet. I aimed the left arm of my mounted golem at the charging deer’s forehead.

“Pile bunker!”

There was a slight sensation of repulsion from the metal stake driven into the center of its forehead. Its limbs did not wither, and it still had some strength left, breathing out white breath even in the darkness.

“What the…?”

We’ve come this far, and we’ve stopped, you bastard. I know Myrril will provide cover fire with her KPV when the time comes, but that means the children will see me. A demon king saved in battle by his young wife. Well, it’s true. It’s the demon king and his wife’s battle achievement, so it’s okay, right?

“No, it’s not okay. It can’t be okay! I’m such a wimp who can’t do anything without Myrril…”

I swung my flail in a reverse cross-arm position and raised my chin, then hit the side of his face with the inner pile driver again.

“This is a top-secret matter of the Demon King’s territory!”

The antlered deer, its eyeballs pierced by the steel stake, stood still for a moment before collapsing sideways.

Ah, did they say that the place where the left and right eyes were connected was its only weak point? I completely forgot about it during the battle. Even if I had remembered, I wouldn’t have been able to think of a way to attack it.

When the ground stopped shaking, I heard cheers. When I looked in that direction, I saw the refugees who had come out of Casspir’s body rejoicing and Myrril-san shaking her head in dismay. She pointed at me and tried to tell me something. I couldn’t understand what she was saying, so I turned up the external audio and picked up her voice.

“The ‘Maiku’ is inside.”

“Eh?”

“But it seems you’ve already proven that you can fight without me. I know you’re a hard person on your own, but there’s no need to shout so loudly, is there?”

“Gyaa… hey Rinko, where’s the external output switch⁉︎”

In the end, I put the super giant shield antlered deer in storage to be grilled tomorrow somewhere with a nice view. It was still a few hours before dawn. Moving around in the dark would only be dangerous, so we decided to just rest.

“Babekiuu, I’m looking forward to it.”

“Hiheika, is the deer delicious?” [T/n: Her Majesty the Queen].

“Yes, it’s delicious. You usually eat deer, right?”

“Yes. Hiheika gave us grilled deer.”

“It was delicious.”

“It’s much better than that.”

“”””!!!””””

I tilt my head as I see the children frozen in amazement. It seems that even the grilled deer was so delicious that they cried, so I guess they can’t imagine.

“Well, we’ll have to wait until tomorrow. We’ll start moving when the sun rises and have the barbecue when we get to the plains.”

“”””…Yeah.””””

“Go to sleep now. There won’t be any more scary creatures coming out.”

“””…Okay.”””

We started moving at sunrise, moving along the mountain path while nibbling on the food rations we had brought with us. We had also grown accustomed to the golem pulling the sleigh, and by noon, we had reached the plains of the western territories of the Republic. From here on, there was no need to follow the winding paths.

“We should be able to make it from here.”

“It should take about an hour… a quarter of an hour.”

I put away the overworked riding golems and woke the children who had been sleeping in the sleigh so we could transfer to the Griffon.

“How can they sleep with all this shaking and cold?”

“It’s not cold, is it?”

Maybe it’s because it’s fluffy. As we started to unload the cargo we had piled onto the sled, I warned Myrril.

“Yoshua, what seems to be going on?”

Fully armed soldiers were coming towards us. At the head of the group was a cavalry unit from the Central Republic.

“That must be Farnas-dono.”

He was the former second-in-command of the Cassmeer Guard, a territory within the Central Region, and had been recruited to the capital. With his forces under his command, we’d certainly be the target.

“That’s good; it looks like it won’t be a problem.”

I breathe a sigh of relief, but Myrril shakes her head in despair.

“That’s not going to happen.”
