Chapter 350 – Sarz On My Mind
The next morning, I awoke at sunrise, got ready, ate a quick bite, and started the engine to head south.
“You can sleep in the back.”
“Yay!”
It was a lot of noise, but the immigrant family seemed to have already gotten used to it and started sleeping peacefully. As a former Japanese, I have to say that it’s quite disturbing to drive along a main road just before dawn in a hovercraft that is not only very loud but also creates a storm of noise. It’s louder than a big truck. It’s almost as loud as a small plane. If there were any houses nearby, it would be a real nuisance, but unfortunately, there are none to be seen.
“I wonder if there are any post towns along this road?”
“I don’t know, but if there aren’t any, it’s probably because not many people travel between the southern and western territories.”
Since we left the capital of Hagwai, we’ve been following what appears to be a main road, but we haven’t seen any inns, villages, private homes, or civilians. We’ve only come in contact with traveling merchants who have been attacked by monsters. As a distribution route, there may not be much need to connect the southern and western territories, as Myrril said. Even if the political and economic situation develops, if it’s not very rich and there’s a lack of products other than gold, then merchants and civilians won’t move around.
“Yoshua, turn left there.”
Following Myrril’s instructions, we enter the forest path. There’s not much room for a hovercraft, but since we don’t see any horse-drawn sleighs or passersby coming towards us, we continue.
“Have we been through here before?”
“No, it seems we’ve strayed a little west of the path we took before. Maybe the terrain has changed, and we’ve made a mistake.”
“The terrain has changed?”
“Yes. The snow is getting thinner.”
“…Oh, I see.”
I was a little confused, not knowing what the slight tingle in the back of my mind was.
“Spring is coming.”
That’s when it hit me. Spring. In a few weeks or months, when spring comes, we’ll go back to Casemaian. It’s not that I’m sad that my vacation with Myrril is coming to an end… We were hardly ever alone. The peaceful days were just a few days. I guess it’s something like the sadness of beautiful, happy times passing by, but I can’t find a way to put my feelings into words. I was planning to come back for the summer vacation anyway, and the winter vacation is no problem…
“No, it’s not over yet. It’s not too late.”
“Not too late? For what?”
“We didn’t even take a break during the winter vacation. When we get back to Sarz, I don’t want to work for a while.”
“I don’t know what that is, but there’s no need to work. It is unlikely that we will be asked to work under the present circumstances.”
As in other large cities, there’s a huge shortage of administrative staff in Sarz. I know that, but I don’t want to know. I’ve already decided that I’m not going to work for a while when I get to Sarz!
“This area looks vaguely familiar…”
Was it when we went to Nordanan, the city on the border between the western and southern territories, or when we went to pick up Ivan-san and the other guards who were on their way to defeat the rebels? I’ve been here before. We’re not far from Sarz now.
“Have we reached Sarz yet?”
The tiger-beastman child Koff came to the driver’s seat and looked into the windshield with a look of excitement on his face.
“Not yet, but we’re almost there. I think we’ll be there around noon.”
“Is Sarz a nice place?”
“Yes, it’s a nice place. But it’s a really small town compared to the Imperial Capital.”
I suddenly realized and looked back at Koff’s parents.
“Have you decided where you’re going to live?”
“Yes. The guild will introduce me to a place. I got a letter of introduction from Ecla-sama.”
I wonder if they’re being nice to them because I brought them here or if they’re just being nice to newcomers in general. If you look at it that way, it’s almost like a modern nation, and I think it’s a slightly rude thought.
Soon, Sarz’s familiar walls appeared in the distance.
Chapter 351 – The Inheritors of Miracles
“Ah, what a good time to meet you, Demon King. It’s done.”
About half a month after I returned to Sarz, Lukemon-san, whom I met at the market, told me this. It was so sudden that I was confused and didn’t know what he was talking about. What is being done?
This person is a legendary master craftsman known as “Miracle Lukemon,” but he lacks many things. Things like explanations, friendliness, a sense of decency, and business sense. It’s interesting that he owns a jewelry store. I guess high-ranking people are more or less eccentric in every field.
He handed me two thin, plain wooden boxes. Ah, now I remember.
“These are… Corlo’s, right?”
It’s a magic item to give to a family member who’s far away. Somehow, I’ll cover up the fact that I asked for it and then forgot about it. It will protect his wife and grant his daughter’s wish, or something like that. It was said that Myrril would ask Lukemon-san to request it on behalf of Corlo, who was still unable to leave the capital for training. I had heard about it, but since I was enjoying my first vacation in a long time, it had completely slipped into the back of my mind.
“I finished it just as the young lady asked. I’m sorry, but I tied the magical power supply to the ring.”
“Magic supply?”
“Yes. It’s a way out in case of rapid magic power consumption.”
“The magic stone also contains magic power, but depending on the situation, it may not be enough. If the magic power consumption exceeds the stored magic power, it will be supplied by the person wearing it, but for women and children with low magic power, it may harm their health.”
I kind of understand. So it’s like an external fuel tank again. That’s okay.
“It doesn’t matter, but will it reach the other world?”
“I don’t know.”
Hey, Lukemon-san⁉︎
“You can’t know until you try. How could there be a way to test it?”
Well, that’s probably true.
After receiving it and thanking him, the miracle craftsman Lukemon shakes his head with a sour look on his face.
“It’s me who should be thanking you, Demon King.”
What Lukemon-san is talking about is the collective workshop he set up with the Sarz Merchant Guild. It wasn’t for commercial use either but for educational purposes. It was like a vocational school for young people who wanted to become blacksmiths or craftsmen. They had already secured a location and had a group of applicants, but it seems that due to internal strife within the merchant guild, funding was stopped, and it was on the verge of being scrapped. Then, just in time, a large order came in from the “Demon King of Casemaian”―the wedding ring for me and Myrril―and he put all the reward money into it.
Does he personally provide the seed money for a vocational training facility? That’s a very generous offer, Lukemon-san.
“Since I paid for your work, I’m not the one who should be thanked. Besides, I’ll be providing financial support as well, okay?”
“That’s not how it works. The craftsmen in Sarz are a thin layer with no skills. The goal is to raise the standard, so the people who should pay are the people of Sarz. At least in the beginning, it should come from those who will benefit.”
“That’s true, but…”
“The idea of me paying for it personally came from a story I heard from the young lady. It’s called the “Uwin Uwin Technique,” a business method from another world that even shocked Ecla.” [T/n: Win-win.]
I have a feeling they’re talking about something with a different name I don’t know, but never mind.
I wonder if the story Myrril told him was about the school, the hospital, or the factory Simon rebuilt. I don’t know what happened after that, but if it helps support the young people of Sarz, that’s great.
“How’s the workshop?”
“It’s crazy.”
The eccentric dwarf master craftsman says dismissively, but his face looks happy.
“Every single one of them is so crazy about it that they’ve lost their minds. After all, it was their first job.”
He was referring to the repair request I had sent in as a teaching tool. The part to be repaired was the bent rear axle, but I told them they could take it apart and look at the other parts. On the condition, of course, that they put it back together again.
When I first showed Casspir to the dwarves in the workshop, they all gasped in unison. It was interesting to see their complexions and eye colors change as they touched it with their fingers, peered into various places, and pounded on the steel with their fists.
According to Myrril, dwarves become so absorbed in one thing that they lose all sense of time and place. They will work until they collapse without eating or sleeping, so I brought them a large supply of mineral water and portable food.
“Will you be all right?”
“Of course. If you give up at the first sign of trouble, you’re not cut out to be a craftsman. If you don’t have the courage to face such a monster, you’d better find another job.”
Lukemon-san specializes in jewelry and magical tools, but he also seems to have a background in mechanical engineering. He was the one who was most engrossed when he first saw Casspir.
“I forgot to tell you. If it’s completed successfully, the reward will be 1,000 gold coins.”
“That’s too much…”
Lukemon-san stopped talking and looked at me. He shook his head and smiled, a friendly smile I had never seen from him before.
“I see.”
That’s right. I don’t give alms. As a merchant, it’s second-rate to only take losses or only take all the profits. I’m counting on getting at least the gold I paid back.
In truth, I’m often the one who’s cheated, but I just smile and pretend that I’m not. As long as I make a profit in the end, it’s not a failure.
You just haven’t made it yet. You can’t laugh at the elves of the southern continent, Solbesia.
“Hey, Yoshua, it’s all here!”
Myrril, who was out shopping, has returned. She carries a huge pile of goods in both hands. She greets Lukemon-san and runs over to help.
“…An ancient dwarf, huh? Maybe the legend was true after all.”
On his way out, the miracle craftsman mumbled something hard to understand and smiled.
