Chapter 364 – A Tall Building on the Snowy Field
After a nap and the sunrise, we headed to the mansion that had become Battlecry’s base of operations. Last night, or rather this morning, when we were at Calmon’s parents’ house, they invited us.
By the way, we only got the magic orb from the sea monster giant octopus, and we left everything else, from disposing of the corpse to applying for the achievement of defeating it, to Tig and the others who have a lot of influence in the Adventurers’ Guild. I went to the Adventurers’ Guild in Lafan to take a picture to send to Rinko’s friend, but I didn’t know anyone there. I just remember giving the guild master Ecla-san’s letter of introduction and making small talk. Rinko was thrilled to hear that the receptionist was like a “beautiful man in woman’s clothes” with a tall, slender figure, narrow eyes, big breasts, and cat ears. There was so much going on that I couldn’t quite picture the person in my mind.
For the first time in a while, I walked beside Myrril. I had heard it was about a mile and a half northwest of Calmon’s parent’s house, so we headed straight for the forest we could see in that direction. In this world, there are no roads for cars, and there is no snow removal, so the original roads are buried under the snow and cannot be seen. The snowfield has only slight undulations and ruts from horse-drawn sleighs and parts trampled by human feet.
Perhaps because the temperature is still low, the snow is hard and compacted, making it easy to walk on.
“I like both teleportation and vehicles, but sometimes you have to move your body.”
“That’s right. Especially when you reach middle age.”
“Yoshua seems to have gotten a little healthier lately.”
“Yes, maybe I’ve put on some weight.”
“No, that’s not what I mean. When I first met you, you had a… how shall I put it… dried-up look about you.”
“Huh?”
What’s that supposed to mean? I’ve never heard that kind of assessment before. I’ve been called ‘dead fish eyes’ before, though.
“You look really lively these days. In fact, you look positively full of vitality.”
Lively, you say. I guess I should be happy about that. Well, it’s all because of…
“It’s because I’m with Myrril.”
When I say that, Nojaloli-san smiles happily with a slightly shy look on her face. She’s so cute.
There’s nothing in my life that I’ve been dissatisfied with since I met her. Though I feel like the rate at which I run into trouble is a little too high, it’s not necessarily Myrril’s fault. I’m getting healthier, and the food is delicious. There are so many encounters, adventures, and surprising experiences that I never get bored.
“But, you know. They bought it in a place that’s really far from where people live.”
“I guess they wanted to take a break from work and relax at home, right?”
As we walked, we came to the edge of the wooded area we had seen.
“If it’s a mile and a half to the northwest, do you think we have to go around this woods?”
It looked like there were a few hundred meters to go. That meant it was either at the end of the woods or beyond. The undergrowth of fine branches like bushes is exposed by the snow. It seems to grow densely, almost a meter above the ground. It looks difficult to walk through. Should I use my teleport? Looking through the gaps in the trees of the woods, I could see a wall that looked like a man-made structure in the distance.
“Is that the Battlecry mansion?”
“It looks like it’s at least some kind of building. Do you think you can use your teleportation to get there?”
“Probably.”
I can only teleport within my field of vision and only through gaps that I can pass through. If there are any obstacles in the way, I’ll hit them. It’s surprisingly difficult to use. It’s a little late to say this, and I didn’t come up with the name, but I think it’s more accurate to call it a blink than teleportation per se.
I picked Myrril up in my arms and held her as close to my chest as I could so she wouldn’t hit any branches on the way.
When I jumped using teleportation, I found myself in an open area. I think my clothes were a little torn, but when I looked at Myrril, she nodded as if to say she was fine.
“Huh?”
There was a small castle gate to the right, and the men from Battlecry were lined up with their backs to us. Tig and Colon, who had noticed our presence, turned and rolled their eyes.
“Hey Tig, what’s up?”
“It’s nothing.”
“The entrance is hard to find, so I was thinking of going over to see Takifu and Mir.”
Tig looks into the distance beyond the forest we came out of and thinks.
“I thought you’d come in through the main road, so you got us from behind. We’ll have to think about that if we’re under siege.”
“There’s no plan for that, Tig.”
McCain laughs softly, like a man who has seen a lot in his time.
“When you say it’s hard to find the entrance, are you talking about these woods?”
“Yes. It seems the first owner left it as a windbreak when he developed the property, but it hasn’t been maintained in a long time, so it’s grown wild and is almost a jungle. It’s like that in the winter, so it’s going to be pretty tough after the snow melts.”
For now, we head for the mansion with the three of them as our guides. I think they should have waited for us inside since we didn’t say when we were coming―there were no clocks to begin with. If there’s no phone or email, maybe that’s the kind of consideration they have.
“It’s huge!”
“It’s said to be the second largest building in Lafan after the lord’s mansion. It was originally built by a shipping company, and at that time, it also doubled as a trading house. It’s said that they closed down their business a few years ago and moved back to the north or central region.
It’s a white-walled, three-story mansion. It’s a stately home of white chalk and the perfect expression of it. The front of the building is wide open, probably because it’s for carriages. I wonder what kind of nobleman he was… Wait, there aren’t any nobles in the Republic, are there? I don’t know what kind of rich man it was, but the first owner must have been super-rich.
Somehow it feels like it would make a good setting for a violent survival horror game. I’m not going to say it because I think it would be rude and you wouldn’t understand.
“It looks pretty clean. You must have paid a lot for it.”
“Not really. It’s a lot cheaper than the budget I had in mind at first.”
Colon and McCain look at Tig. The party leader from the Tiger Beastman tribe laughs out loud and puffs out his chest at us.
“Yeah, it was a pretty good buy. After all, it’s a famous cursed property in Lafan!”
