Chapter 369 – Promise To Meet Again
We take Lui back to the mansion and ask the five members of Battle Cry about the situation.
“How about you?”
“No one died. We didn’t even seriously injure anyone.”
“Or rather, they had no intention of killing.”
Tig and Louis say it so easily, but ordinary people can die just from being hit by you guys.
In the large dining room (probably for parties) that leads to the upstairs terrace, the surrendered attackers sit in a corner. There are six of them, all young men. They all have deeply carved features and clean lines, and they don’t look like people you’d see in the Republic or the Kingdom. They have a reasonably strong build, but they are somewhat awkward and look down as if they are not used to being in this situation.
“I told them to disarm; what should we do?”
“It looks like we should give them their weapons back. They say their enemies are attacking.”
“No, wait. That’s not our problem. Why are we doing this?”
“Because you’ve been stirring things up and spreading rumors all over the place, Tig.”
“…No, I didn’t mean for it to be like this, you know.”
He mumbles, but this time, it’s Tig’s fault, not theirs. He may have just wanted to clear up the story of the curse surrounding their mansion, but what he unearthed was not a ghost but a current, ongoing dispute.
“Lui, what do you know about the enemy?”
“The leader is Yeld. He is Mead-sama’s son-in-law who tried to take over the Heibern family. He is the uncle of the current head of the family, Kaia-sama, and he is not related by blood. …And he is the enemy of her father.”
Hmm. It’s a common story even in my former world. There’s nothing particularly surprising about it, but there’s no reason for us to get involved in it now.
“Do you have any proof that he killed him?”
“No, so he was left alone. But when Mead-sama went missing, it was Yeld who escorted the carriage. Also, if you cross the border, the western territory where Wolle-sama died in an accident is Yeld’s hometown.”
“Hmm. So Yeld is from the Empire, is he?”
“A low-life who was forced to flee his family home and fled to the Republic.”
From what I’ve heard, he’s a suspicious-looking guy who’s done something suspicious. As far as the Heibern case goes, Yeld is definitely guilty, but it seems he’s smart enough to avoid getting caught.
“Is Yeld after the money? Could there still be a treasure in this mansion?”
“No. The treasure is in a place known only to Mead-sama. I’m trying to find out where it is.”
“From who?”
“From the spirit of Mead-sama, who is supposed to appear in this Heibern Mansion.”
“”””Eeehh””””
The three common sense people in the Battle Cry group, Colon and the others, frown as if to say, “Give us a break!”
“I don’t believe in ghosts, so it doesn’t matter to me. If you were going to attack now, why didn’t you prevent this place from being put up for sale?”
Louis’ question is a fair one. I was thinking the same thing.
“Until the property was sold, there were magic tools, barriers, and surveillance. Besides, we don’t have enough money to buy it.”
“Even so, you wouldn’t attack here, would you?”
“If it wasn’t for the Demon King, I would have negotiated with the new owner.”
“It’s still Tig’s fault, isn’t it?”
She pushed as hard as she could because she was in a hurry, but she’s not really the type to rely on brute force. Though their names are quite similar, Lui and Louis seem to be quite different in appearance and personality.
“They’re here.”
Colon opened the terrace window and pointed outside.
“There are three spearmen on horseback, three shield bearers in horse-drawn sleighs, and two archers. They all carry swords. They are former soldiers, so they are well-trained. And they’re well equipped.”
“Yeld was a low-ranking knight in the Imperial Army. They are probably former soldiers who were hired through his connections.”
I don’t know if it’s a family dispute or an inheritance dispute, but I think it’s wrong to do it in the mansion that now belongs to someone else. I don’t see how we can get involved.
“Hey, Lui.”
I ask the girl from Surz, who looks around restlessly.
“What will happen if we kill them?”
“We will be happy.”
That’s honest. No, perhaps the question was too vague.
“Let me rephrase. Will the enemy send reinforcements? And will the rights to the land be transferred from Yeld to someone else, and will a new conflict begin?”
Lui tilted her head and thought for a moment.
“No. The only people who help Yeld are soldiers who want money. Yeld has no rights. They won’t be transferred to anyone.”
Myrril-san lets out a breath.
“Then let them know the crime of disturbing the peace of the Demon King.”
“Why?”
Lui looks at us with a confused expression. I think she’s wondering why the Demon King is helping her. Lui and Yeld are the same for us. When you say that it’s not fair to decide based on only one side of the story, you’re right.
“I don’t care.”
I laugh. Whether to kill or not to kill, whether to judge as an enemy or treat as an ally. The difference is not very logical. In fact, in our case, it almost always is.
“Inexplicable.”
Yes, me too. I think the warriors of Surz thought the same. I guess I could at least meet with Yeld and hear what he has to say. I almost do, but then I stop myself.
“Yoshua, it doesn’t look like you have any doubts.”
Myrril tells me with a smile in her voice. When I look in the direction she’s pointing, I see an archer about to shoot an arrow.
“That’s our enemy.”
