Chapter 401 – First Approach
We jump over the wall using short-range teleportation and head towards the north side of the castle. The building we’re heading for has a plain white three-story wall facing the north side of the city wall. It looks like a low-rise apartment building in a Japanese city, minus the bumps, signs, and air conditioners. Of course, it’s not made of concrete but of wood with plastered stone walls. From a bit away from the wall, you can see the side of the building facing east. There are not many windows, but that can be said of all buildings in the Empire. It may also have something to do with the amount of glass produced (or the amount circulating in the private sector).
“This is bad…”
“What’s wrong?”
It doesn’t look like there are any enemies to make Myrril feel threatened.
In front of the building was a fairly wide street, just under ten meters wide, and there were barricades set up about ten meters on either side of the building. The guards were two men in black cloaks, each carrying a spear and a sword. They must be Imperial Army soldiers. They don’t seem to be a tough enemy.
The barricade was also a simple structure made of thin wood. It was a mere decoration, and it was unclear whether the object blocking the passage was the town’s residents or the invading enemy forces (like us).
“With that…”
The frowning girl points to the letters and symbols on the building’s wall. I guess they’re there as a sign, but I can’t read them.
No, I think I’ve seen those letters somewhere before, but I can’t remember exactly where…
“I think I saw them in Sarz. You know, on the wall of the merchant guild.”
“You found it out. That’s right. It says ‘Nurturing Mutual Aid and Relief Center.'”
“Nurturing Mutual Aid and Relief Center… Is that a hospital?”
According to Myrril, it’s a place for children’s education run by the church. But now, everything is in name only, and it’s gotten a dirty reputation as a place where human trafficking auctions are held and criminals are trained. Myrril explained, but I still couldn’t quite grasp the reality of the situation. Seeing me like this, Mead quietly continued.
“Brother, that place is like an orphanage in our former world.”
“Hey.”
Wait. What happened to the kids there? Were they even properly protected? Considering that the building is being used as a base for Surz’s kidnapping and imprisonment, it’s easy to guess the extent of the “mutual aid” there. I guess my irritation was showing on my face. Myrrill smiled wryly and shook his head.
“That’s right, the reason I said it was bad was because of your face. When it comes to children, your eyes get really serious, don’t they?”
“You’re the same, aren’t you, Myrril?”
I thought about entering from the roof, which was vulnerable because of the teleportation, but I stopped myself. I held Myrril, who was nodding, to my chest and asked Mead, who was floating in the air.
“Mead, can you see the location of the hostages?”
“Sorry, brother. This building is probably covered in concealment magic or something, so I can’t see any sign of them.”
“I see…”
“Yoshua, don’t worry. The captives should be on the second floor.”
Myrril answers naturally, although I’m sure she didn’t hear Mead’s answer. Mead looks at me, but I don’t know what this suspicious look means. The super dwarf lady has supernatural powers.
“How do you know they’re upstairs?”
“Because there’s a reaction from the concealment magic circle only there. That means they want to hide something there.”
“I see.”
I teleported to the front of the barricade. Before the soldiers could react, the mighty arm of Myrril that had descended from my chest struck them.
I called to the two soldiers, who were writhing in agony from a tremendous body blow to the side, and said to them.
“I’ve come to ask for the Surz you’re holding. If you resist, I’ll kill you.”
The soldiers, who had fallen face down, jumped at the emotionless tone of my voice, which surprised even me.
“W-what…?”
As if he was about to draw his sword, I stepped on the arm stretched out to his waist. I felt the elbow break under my heel.
“Aaaahhh…!”
Hearing the scream, seven soldiers ran out of the building. They were men in black cloaks carrying spears and swords. They seemed a bit older and more experienced than the soldiers guarding the barricade.
“This is just a small mistake for us.”
“I think so.”
We thought they were going to charge us with the momentum of their attack, but the soldiers looked at us and started to look around. We wondered what they were doing, but then we realized why. They probably thought it was impossible for a pair of a shabby old man and a tiny girl to attack them. It was a natural judgment.
“Who are you?”
“We are the Demon King of Annihilation, Takifu Yoshua, who rules Casemaian, and his wife. Stand back.”
Her Majesty the Queen shouted at the top of her lungs, but of course, it didn’t turn out like some period drama. The soldiers began to stand guard in groups, looking increasingly suspicious. Are they just going to let us through?
Looking up at the roof of the building at Myrril’s signal, I saw archers with longbows taking aim at us.
“We want the people of Surz back. They are our people.”
Myrril looks at the soldiers, holding the UZI she had slung over her shoulder in her armpit. Some of the soldiers, realizing that we are the only immediate threat, begin to sneer and laugh at us with contempt.
“You’re all worthless garbage.”
“That suits you half-breeds.”
Taking advantage of the pause in the conversation, the sentry who had been lying at our feet began to move. With his one crippled hand, he made for Myrril. The man trying to grab the little girl was pushed up in annoyance and received a short uppercut that sent him flying. He spun around and slammed into the barricade, smashing the wood and falling silent.
“Resistance is futile. If you do not obey, we will kill you. If there are children or civilians caught up in your stupid plan, we will have them freed as well.”
Even after hearing this, there was no sign of them moving.
“Do you think we will accept such nonsense…”
“That’s your problem. You’re free to think what you want and fight what you want. The Imperial Army has three choices.”
Myrrril raised her left hand, which held no weapon, and slowly folded her fingers toward the soldiers.
“Run, obey, or be slaughtered.”
