Chapter 509: Abyssal Reckoning? [4]
"O’ Drowned God... Let the deep open its unseen mouth. Let the quiet weight gather, patient and cold..."
With each completed sentence of the chant spoken, the mana surrounding the Drowned King became erratic and energetic.
"Let all things falter. Let all things fall. Let the world feel the pull of the darkest floor, where light does not return..."
The ambient mana surrounding the Drowned King rushed to him, wrapping around his body as though he were its one true love.
They then wrapped around his harpoon in spirals, creating rings.
One ring.
Two rings.
And eventually... Three rings...
Each ring brighter and wider than the last.
"Through this harpoon... Let all things be taken into your drowning embrace..."
With the last bit of his chant finished, the mana gathered within his body exploded out as though it had finally broken through its seal.
And with their freedom came the appearance of illusory black water that seeped out from the grand around the Drowned King.
With a diameter of 15 metres, the Drowned King flooded the area of his mysterious black water, allowing the appearance of something to rise from it.
Appearing from behind the Drowned King, a colossal shadow resembling a leviathan appeared, coiling upwards from the black water beneath itself.
Its illusory body was black, pure black—imitating the colour of the darkness that resided in the deepest trenches of the sea.
Ominous wouldn’t be enough to describe the presence that exuded from Drowned King’s Expression.
And... It would only be right that simple words couldn’t explain a technique of this scale easily.
Lillian, standing in place, felt the space around her warp and stretch towards the colossal shadow leviathan.
What she had just witnessed was a Sealed Technique—a technique powerful enough that it required a full chant to be unleashed.
The reason... Well, that would be because the Abyssal Harpoon, the Drowned King’s combat style, held the soul of a powerful monster that resided within the technique he was currently performing.
These Sealed Techniques were usually reserved for the final technique of a combat style, mainly for the conceptual integrity of the technique.
Now then, you might be asking, if a full chant was needed for a Sealed Technique to unleash, why did Lillian not attack him midway through?
That was because she didn’t know how much time they had left within the Mana Realm before it completely collapsed, as it had a separate mana reserve from the Drowned King.
With how much she had been through, she had lost track of time. And so, while both she and Nearlo still had enough mana and strength, attacking with their strongest attack would be the best option.
Because as long as the Mana Realm still remained, so did the barrier that kept the Drowned King from returning to his physical body and regaining enough strength to destroy them near-instantly.
"Are yar ready, matey?" Nearlo asked, his muscles flexing as he had finished forming the Expressions of his double Leviathan Descent.
Lillian nodded and adjusted her stance with her black odachi, which pulled along the floating black leviathan above her head.
"Let’s go."
With a small mutter from her as a signal, both Lillian and Nearlo rushed forward, leaping through the air with their weapons raised high towards the sky.
They then simultaneously roared:
"[5TH TECHNIQUE OF THE DEEP SEA HUNTER—!]" x2
The Drowned King, noticing their charge, bent his knees and pounced towards them with explosive speed.
"[7th Technique of the Abyssal Harpoon...!]"
The circle of black water beneath his feet followed his leap, pulling the colossal, shadowy leviathan, who settled its dark gaze on the three leviathans off in the distance.
It then opened its maw.
Meeting the gaze of the shadow leviathan, the three leviathans glared back and opened their deadly maw.
[12h: 40m: 20s]
Lillian and Nearlo, watching as the treacherous Drowned King was now before their eyes with malicious intentions, swung their swords down.
"[LEVIATHAN’S DESCENT]!" x2
As passionately and loudly as their masters, the three leviathans roared viciously at the enemy leviathan.
Seeing this, the Drowned King finished the end of his sentence, as well:
"[Harpoon of the Abyssal Leviathan...!]"
The Drowned King stabbed forth.
Nearlo and Lillian swung down.
And at that moment of impact—
BOOM!
—A shockwave, large and powerful enough to shake the entire realm, erupted.
Chasms formed on the coral ceiling, fissures split apart the water below, and lastly... Spatial cracks appeared within the conceptual walls of the Mana Realm.
Lillian’s black odachi and Nearlo’s black cutlass and shortsword clashed against the Drowned King’s water harpoon, which was strong enough to resist the sharpness of the weapons pressed against it.
Neither of them was able to get a step over the other; they were locked into a temporary stalemate.
S-SKRR!
Sparks flew wildly as the Drowned King’s harpoon continued to graze and pushed against the edges of their black blades.
Just like how all four weapons were pressed together, so were the floating Leviathans above them.
Three, one black and two translucent in colour, tried to bite down on a leviathan, which was of a much greater size and presence.
But that wasn’t what it only had...
Lillian groaned as she felt her arms shake wildly, feeling some mysterious force grab onto her arms, and she tried to bend them unnaturally. It was the air, or more specifically, the space!
Gritting her teeth, she continued to push forward along with Nearlo.
But then—
"Ngh!"
—She felt herself being pushed back.
[12h: 40m: 40s]
Lillian groaned, feeling the back of her boots skidding back and crushing the coral beneath her feet into dust.
For some reason, the pressure on her blade had suddenly increased!
Throwing a worried glance towards Nearlo, she found that he was now operating only one arm.
What happened to the other?
Nearlo, grimacing, looked towards his limp arms—finding them bloodied and twisted into a spiral like his arm had become a wrung-out towel.
He endured through the pain of shattered bones piercing through his flesh, as well as the burning pain his muscles were experiencing.
Looking up, he found the leviathan that was summoned with that arm was now hanging inside the mouth of the colossal abyssal leviathan, which—soon after—vanished.
One of their leviathans was now down.
Lillian, realising this, tried to push back to compensate for the loss of Nearlo’s other arm, who was trying to repair it.
However.
She was having great difficulty pushing back the Drowned King.
Such a task as this was easier said than done, as it was the equivalent of telling two normal humans to slow down an entire train by themselves with swords!
Unbeknownst to their masters’ situations, the two Leviathans glared at the colossal abyss Leviathan with malice in their eyes.
They roared at each other, mouths open, before charging at each other again.
[12h: 41m: 00s]
"ARGH—!" Lillian yelped as the muscles in her left arm contorted slightly. She quickly raised her eyes towards her leviathan and found a bite had been taken out of it.
Shaking her head, she continued to focus on resisting the Drowned King’s push. By now, they had travelled over a kilometre from where they previously stood.
Then... What was already a terrible situation became even worse.
[12h: 41m: 10s]
Nearlo’s last leviathan was killed.
His current arm began to twist rapidly, blood squelching and leaking as tears appeared. His bones then began to fracture and pierce through his muscles.
Having yet been able to recover his other arm... He was now left crippled.
Lillian watched as Nearlo was blasted off to the side, leaving her on her own to brave through the attack. Fear grasped her heart as she tried to stand her ground, trying to keep her balance as the coral behind her tried to trip her up.
But.
In the next few seconds—
[12h: 41m: 15s]
—Tripping would be the least of her worries.
The colossal abyssal leviathan hovered above her own before diving down, biting down on its head and ripping it apart...
And with that, the twisting of Lillian’s arms shortly followed as her bloodshot eyes shot wide open at the pain.
Pain-filled tears bottled up in her eyes before vanishing as a burning glow radiated from her sparkly blue eyes. By wrapping her arms in a cast of water and pushing through the ferocious pain, Lillian—
"HAAAA!"
—Gave out one last desperate roar before the Drowned King’s harpoon slipped through her block and pierced through her lower abdomen.
Blood erupted out of her mouth in waves. And before Lillian could even process that she was stabbed through, a colossal shadow loomed over her and...
BOOM!
Fell down on her, causing a massive crater several metres to appear and a pillar of black water—that was 50 metres wide—to erupt shortly afterwards.
