Picking up the call, the Gardener held it to his ear - in the middle of stirring his cauldron.
As he was about to inquire about the purpose of this call, his eyes immediately widened into shock at what he heard:
"Medicine... I ran out..."
"Excuse me?"
Despite being shocked, the Gardener did not pause his stirring even once. Instead, he continued to concoct the medicine, throwing in a few more ingredients from time to time, multitasking.
"How have you run out? By my calculations, I had created just enough for you to last 3 weeks - more than enough to last you until we arrive back at the main estate after the Legacy Table.
"There were... Unforeseen occurrences where my condition would spike uncontrollably. I believe the corruption had somehow built a resistance to your pills."
Marionette’s revelation caused the Gardener to finally pause, dead in his tracks, freezing his mind from multitasking.
"Preposterous! Corruption building a resistance?" The Gardener exclaimed. "It is no pathogen, how could it possibly build a resistance?!"
These words that he spat out, which may seem like ridicule towards his niece’s revelation, were actually verbal questions he was asking himself.
He hadn’t anticipated that the corruption would have the ability to build resistance to his medicine like bacteria towards antibiotics.
The Gardener scratched his head, clearly agitated. No papers on the corruption told him that they were capable of this!
Even the most detailed papers only spoke about how the corruption would just flood its host’s body with negative sensations, with hopes that its host would give up or die, allowing it to take over.
He glanced back at his cauldron that was still in the process of preparation. He was only three-quarters of the way done with the poison!
’No matter...’
Holding his phone close to his ear again, he muttered...
...
Marionette bit down on the end of a long piece of string. Currently, she was strangling the darkened veins in hopes of preventing them from spreading any further.
With her other hand holding her phone, she listened as her uncle whispered something over the phone:
"Listen here, niece. At this moment in time, your lover is carrying a potent medicine that should relieve you for a while. How long? I’m not quite sure, as I am not fully aware of what it’s capable of. She should be in her room by now. Order her to give it to you."
"Lillian?"
Marionette whispered through her gritted teeth, stunned.
Biting down harder on the string and pulling it tighter, Marionette couldn’t help but think about Lillian - her girlfriend was carrying a potent medicine?
Since when? When was it created? And why was Lillian holding it?
While she was deep in her thoughts, Marionette felt the darkness inside her veins become agitated at the obstruction (the string) in its path.
And before Marionette knew it, the darkness diffused through the walls of her veins; through her muscles; and eventually... through the pores in her skin.
The True Darkness inside her veins exploded outwards in a flurry of tentacles, lashing out and striking at every hard surface inside the room with uncontrollable fury.
How dare the humans try to contain it! How dare its host try to contain it! How dare its host try to resist it!
The sounds of the dark tentacles lashing were silent, yet the results from their lashing were devastating.
Surfaces that were victims of its attack were left distorted and warped; large and smooth grooves now decorated the entire room, growing in number.
The wooden desks were split into two, splintering as the wood began to corrode instantly.
The glass tables were completely destroyed in a single swing, completely shattering and dissolving.
The True Darkness that took control of the dark tentacles faced no resistance when it struck.
Marionette gritted her teeth as she watched this. Letting go of the string, Marionette grabbed onto the bouquet of tentacles sprouting from her wrist - using her magic to the fullest to try and contain it.
"Calm down...!" She ordered with a strained voice.
The Assassin would then watch as one of the tentacles turned on her, stabbing towards her head with speed she was barely able to dodge.
Tilting her head far to the left, she dodged the tentacle that shot right past her head - only receiving a small nick on her cheek.
The True Darkness, seemingly infuriated by what she was trying to achieve, decided to expand its destruction.
One of the tentacles from her wrist lashed at the right wall of the room, causing Marionette to widen her eyes in that direction...
Was Lillian’s room.
...
"She... hanged up?" Lillian stared at her with a raised eyebrow, slightly surprised. Then, she sighed as she laid down. "I guess I caught her at a bad time..."
As Lillian muttered this, she found her ears twitching.
Slowly sitting up, Lillian turned towards her left, staring at the wall in that direction. At this moment, she was currently hearing the noises of something falling apart in the room beside her.
Lillian tilted her head at this.
What was going on?
As Lillian was about to get up to report the noises to the Head Butler, she watched as her wall began to show signs of cracking, then corrosion, then... the leaking of a dark gas...
Without any other warning, Lillian watched as something pierced through her wall - charging towards her with blurring speed.
Falling back on the bed, she watched as a dark tentacle flew over her. Lillian widened her eyes, ’What the—’
Before she could even fully comprehend what was going on, several more tentacles pierced through her wall and darted towards her position.
’An attack!?’
Lillian immediately frowned and rolled off her bed, narrowly dodging. Once the tentacles flew over her, that was when she finally stood up, close to the window.
The Rabbit eyed the tentacles warily, feeling a mixture of dread and death exuding from it. What was going on? Was this another test laid out to her by the Head Butler?
If it was, Lillian could only smile as it was finally something other than maidwork.
Summoning her sword, Lillian shot the darkness another glance, smiling a bit as she was reminded of Marionette’s darkness.
Unfortunately, she was unable to dwell on the thought for long, as the right wall of her room was completely destroyed - revealing the inside of the room she was oh-so curious about all this time.
The room was completely dark; dark enough that she was barely able to see through it. It was also extremely cold, causing Lillian to shiver as its temperature leaked into her room.
As Lillian was about to take on a stance, her electric aura from her sword radiating off of her, Lillian heard something that caused her to freeze in place.
A voice... A familiar voice...
"Lillian... Run away...!"
The voice was hoarse and strained, but there was no way Lillian could mistake it for any other...
"Mari...ReadNovelFull.comte?"
Frozen in place, Lillian watched as the darkness inside the mysterious room shot towards her like an enraged mist.
Lillian was startled, but with her quick thinking—
SHATTER!
—Lillian leapt out of the window beside her.
Falling amongst the glass shards, which left not even a scratch on her skin, Lillian fell - swiftly pursued by the darkness that flooded out of her shattered window like a small tsunami.
Using her magic to cushion her fall, Lillian landed on a large bead of water, which she bounced off of.
Thump.
Lillian bounced and elegantly moved into a roll, landing safely on the cobblestone ground before quickly getting up.
She then leapt back, dodging the crashing wave of darkness that slammed into the ground - swallowing the bead of water that saved her.
Leaping into the air, Lillian created a platform of water underneath her feet, saving her from being devoured by the darkness.
She then continued to rise higher and higher into the air; just enough to where she was able to get a good bird’s eye view over the entire estate.
Lillian then grimaced.
She watched as the entire terrain on which the estate was built was flooded with a mote of darkness.
The vehicles that were parked in the garage were swallowed and corroded near-instantly.
The roads began to erode along with the metal fence gates.
Even the bushes and trees she had worked so hard on were not spared from the devouring sea of darkness.
Lillian watched grimly as the entire mansion shifted downwards slightly, as though it was sinking...
The True Darkness was attacking the foundations of the mansion.
Continuing to stay up in the air, Lillian looked down with a dark expression, ’What’s going on...?’
Had there ever been an event like this in the game?
’And...’
Why did this darkness hold the characteristic of True Darkness...?
Lillian scratched the side of her head, but immediately sprang into action as dark tentacles shot towards her, trying to skewer her out of the air.
And after a dozen minutes of dodging, Lillian soon got a call.
