Chapter 583: Questions about Goals?
Chapter 583: Questions about Goals?
’If I recall, Damien has three siblings.’
As they walked through the glamorous corridors of the Darkhound’s home, Lillian began to recall key information. At this moment in time, besides Damien, no other person with Darkhound blood was currently here.
His father was on a business trip, who was estimated to return by tomorrow, and his siblings were brought along with the man. The mother had already passed away.
’Two brothers, one sister...’
Soon, everyone reached the meeting room. Once the doors were pushed open, they were met with the sight of a large and circular mahogany wood table, which Damien gestured for everyone to gather around.
While the nobles took their seats, the attendants were told to stand near the walls of the room - away from their masters.
Leaning her back against the wall, Lillian glanced around - scrutinising the appearance of the room.
It was a heavily decorated room, filled with various expensive decorations, from high-quality oil paintings to ancient vases to large fangs of powerful monsters, etc.
Each most likely costing up to thousands, even hundreds of thousands, there were perhaps a few items here and there worth a million.
This information was never stated, but Lillian felt like this was a way the Darkhounds could brag about their wealth to the people they were meeting with.
Her eyes then caught a glimpse of Millis, who was smiling at her. Lillian smirked and smiled back, amused by the Heroine.
Afterwards, she turned back to the tables of nobles and found Marionette glancing back at her - a curious look in her eyes. Lillian nodded briefly at the Assassin and got a nod back; it looks like Marionette was just checking up on her.
Marionette turned her head back around and looked towards Damien.
The Darkhound scanned the faces of nobles whose attention was now on him. After seeing that he had gathered all of their focus, he quickly started the first part of the Legacy Table.
"As the host for this year’s Legacy Table, I’ll be walking you all through what we have in store for today and tomorrow." Damien rested his chin on the back of his interlocked fingers, "The first thing we will do is to get a feel of each other’s goals, for example, what are you looking for the most in life? How about we begin with that?
"For example, I wish to achieve the goal of peace and prosperity for all of my closest companions and family and also acquire anything that I cannot attain."
After seeing that everyone got an idea of the activity, Damien then raised a finger and pointed it towards a man wearing a white masquerade mask that held a similarity to a crane.
"You, what’s the goal you wish to achieve later in life?"
The man, briefly startled by the cold pick, quickly got his bearings and announced, "I wish to take over my family’s business and make it more renowned than it already is!"
He then whispered inaudibly at the end of his statement, "And also make them proud..."
Damien’s ears twitched like a keen hound, having picked up what the nobleman had whispered. His family always had a good sense of smell and hearing, and with his senses enhanced by his Tier 3 physique, it was extremely difficult to hide from him.
The Darkhound nodded with a tilt of his head, his lips curling into a comforting, warm, and charismatic smile as he said:
"That is an admirable goal. There’s no one in the world who doesn’t want to make their parent’s proud by being capable enough to continue their family’s legacy. I hope you achieve your goal one day."
He then moved on to the next person.
Lillian remembered this one. She recalled it played out as a cutscene rather than an interactive scene.
This cutscene serves as a way for the player to get to know each noble attending the Legacy Table a bit, giving the player the chance to raise the noble’s affection metre towards them.
Although interacting with the nobles was a tricky task, unless you were somehow invited to the Legacy Table without the need to become a servant to enter.
’But honestly, I have no interest of getting to know anyone here...’
Lillian continued to watch noble after noble state what their goals were, which ranged from power, wealth, and even... Women.
The man who said that last one got a lot of odd stares from the women at the table. After him, the more interesting people began to state their goals.
"I wish to make a world where war doesn’t exist."
Lillian blinked and glanced towards a silver-haired woman in a glamorous dress, befitting of someone who comes from an extremely wealthy family or... a royal family.
Silvia Von Silversteel, Lillian recognised this person well. She had also met her once before.
During the time after she defeated the Puppeteer, Thalrek, she had rescued the people he was turning into puppets and mana batteries. Silvia was one of the people she rescued on that day.
’She’s also part of Nolstra’s royal family...’
Damien heard the Princess’s goal and found himself scoffing at her in his mind. A world without war? What she was asking was a world without human malice or greed.
As long as humans remain, so does the sin to enact war on other lands and territories.
It was a naive fool’s dream.
"I see... Well, I certainly think it’s possible, if given time. I have heard a report where the more beautiful a person was, the more likely things would go their way~... I believe wholeheartedly, miss, that you will eventually achieve your dream."
Lillian found her face twitching at Damien’s words. This man didn’t mean that one bit; if anything, Lillian bet he was hoping it wouldn’t happen!
Up until now, she had watched Damien throw honeyed words towards women at the table, while giving the men the bare minimum - he didn’t really care about their goals, he just wanted to charm them.
Soon, it was Reph’s turn, who only sighed tiredly - he couldn’t care less about his goals in the future, he just wanted to...
"I... I just want to laze around whenever I want... without worry..." Reph muttered, his eyes lazily resisting the urge to fall asleep.
"Oh? Uh... I see. Well, I hope you can achieve that?" Damien answered in an uncertain manner, confused about how to approach commenting on Reph’s goal.
Afterwards, it soon got to Marionette, who only huffed with crossed arms.
Lillian rubbed her chin. She still remembered the answer the Assassin had said to this question back in the game. The response Marionette gave was ’Security’.
’I wonder if she’ll respond any differently.’
"Well, miss? Do you have a goal in mind, or do you perhaps need more time to answer? No rush, of course." Damien cooed, staring directly at Marionette’s red eyes, who narrowed dangerously upon noticing.
Marionette folded her arms and snorted, "I’ll just give my answer now and be done with it."
After a moment of thought, hesitation, and a glance back at Lillian, Marionette answered with:
"Security. I wish to achieve security in life."
"I see, well, would you like to expand on—"
"No."
"Okay... Well... I do hope you will achieve your goal of security, Miss. Although I’m sure with your background and lovely—"
"Your voice is irritating to hear. Please move on."
After that, Damien decided to move on.
Lillian had a pondering look on her face as she stared at the back of Marionette’s chair, ignoring the statements made by nobles around her.
It seemed that even with her presence, she hadn’t diverted Marionette towards any other answer.
’Security must mean a lot to her, then...’ Lillian then smirked a bit, ’I’ll be sure to give her plenty when I get the chance.’
Eventually, this round of questions came to an end, followed by another. Several small questions were asked and answered around the table, the responses given soon becoming enough for those around them to use as conversation starters.
And soon, this part of the Legacy Table came to an end, with Lillian almost dying of boredom from standing in one place.
’No wonder Elara didn’t come... She must’ve known this would be boring as hell.’
Lillian remembered seeing Millis extremely fidgety through the table conversation; the Heroine was almost dying to do something else but stand still.
’Maybe, she might have ADHD, after all...’
"Are you alright, Lillian?"
The Rabbit woke up from her brief daze and looked beside her, finding Marionette staring at her with a look of concern.
Looking at the girl from top to bottom, Marionette asked:
"Are your legs tired from standing? Do you need anywhere to rest? There are benches around for you to sit on."
Lillian glanced up and looked around, finding herself in the middle of a massive garden filled with flowers that shimmered beautifully under the bright moon of the Underworld.
Despite the time being currently day on the surface, there was never a sun in the Underworld, just an artificial moon.
"Oh my god, I must say you have an absolutely gorgeous dress."
"Yeah! Could you please tell us who tailored this for you?"
Lillian looked away from the moon and Marionette to be approached by two noblewomen.
Then, she looked around at the other nobles and found them to be gathered in either duos or groups - conversing with one another.
’Well... I guess we’re already onto the next part...’
