Incurable Pain | Chapter 13

The rules for selecting top classes for Seniors at Third Middle School were different from those in other schools.

There were a total of twelve classes in their batch, with three hundred and sixty students. The top sixty students based on the initial evaluation scores will be divided into Class 1 and 2—both of which will receive targeted intensive training for the top students.

But even though both Class 1 and Class 2 were top classes, the academic atmosphere is certainly different between the top thirty students and the bottom thirty students.

So even if Yu Luoyin didn’t say anything, Bai Xunyin would still strive to secure a spot in Class 1.

Her previous exam scores had consistently ranked within the top ten in the whole school. As long as she performed normally, getting into Class 1 was not a problem for her.

As for Yu Luoyin…

Bai Xunyin hadn’t anticipated that Yu Luoyin’s grades would be even better than hers.

After parting ways with Yu Luoyin at the rear playground earlier, Bai Xunyin was urgently pulled back to the classroom by her worried friend, Ah Mo, to continue with her tasks. Before leaving school, almost instinctively, she visited the teachers’ office.

Bai Xunyin asked Shen Langli for a copy of the school’s past years’ exam ranking list.

She had only focused on her own grades before and had only glanced at her own ranking. But now… Bai Xunyin wanted to see how Yu Luoyin’s grades compared to hers.

Since he suggested she aim for Class 1, did that mean he was very confident in his own grades?

The stubbornness that refused to be outdone in terms of grades emerged within Bai Xunyin. She took the ranking list home and looked for Yu Luoyin’s name.

Ten minutes later, she felt somewhat disheartened.

Compared to her rankings within the top ten of the entire school after each exam, Yu Luoyin’s scores had consistently remained within the top three since the beginning of his third year.

Even at his worst, he wouldn’t drop below fifth place.

Compared to him, she still had a long way to go.

Bai Xunyin furrowed her brows, a hint of dissatisfaction flickering in her clear eyes.

What was even more ironic was that the subject in which Yu Luoyin excelled the most on his report card was physics, and yet he had asked her to tutor him in physics…

Wasn’t that unfair?

Thinking back to the half month she spent with him at the library, Bai Xunyin couldn’t help feeling like she had been deceived.

This emotion directly influenced Bai Xunyin the next day during the class placement exam. She treated the physics paper with utmost attention, meticulously checking it.

She wanted to surpass Yu Luoyin for once.

Previously, Bai Xunyin had compared Yu Luoyin’s exam papers with hers and found that his physics scores were only about seven or eight points higher each time.

However, in the senior year facing the college entrance exam, even a one-point difference could mean leaving an entire track field of people behind, let alone seven or eight points.

Still, Bai Xunyin believed that if she tried hard enough, she might have a chance to surpass him.

So, after the highly tense exam, Bai Xunyin’s slender shoulders felt somewhat sore.

Ah Mo was in another exam room, and after she finished, she rushed over excitedly, “Yinyin, Yinyin! How did your exam go? I used the key questions you helped me highlight yesterday, and I think I have a shot at being in the top thirty!”

Ah Mo’s grades were quite good, but she had never been in the absolute top tier. The main reason was her playful and lively nature; she never focused all her energy on studying.

But with some effort, she could still compete for a top thirty spot.

Bai Xunyin couldn’t help but feel fortunate that the key questions she had intuitively highlighted actually appeared on the exam paper.

She typed on her phone.

[No problem, we can definitely both make it to Class 1 together.]

“Hehe, I think so too!”

Ah Mo chuckled, hooking her arm around Bai Xunyin’s shoulder and gossipping with her excitedly, “Let me tell you, I was in the same exam room as Sheng Churan. That fool finished her last exam in just ten minutes and handed in her paper early. Tut-tut, it’s clear she’s off to catch Yu Luoyin again.”

“…”

Her admiration for Ah Mo’s gossip-gathering abilities was truly boundless.

Ever since she learned a few days ago about the complicated relationship between Sheng Churan and Yu Luoyin, Ah Mo had somehow managed to gather all this gossip from various sources. And according to Ah Mo’s understanding—Sheng Churan was indeed head over heels for him, but Yu Luoyin’s real interest was her.

Bai Xunyin was truly frustrated by this. The moment she heard these two names from Ah Mo, she wanted to run away.

“Let’s go, let’s go!”

Ah Mo suddenly became interested, grabbing Bai Xunyin and enthusiastically saying, “Where is Yu Luoyin’s exam room? Let’s go watch the show; Sheng Churan is definitely going to be annoyed again!”

Bai Xunyin really didn’t want to join in on this ‘show,’ so she slung her backpack over her shoulder and started walking away.

“Yinyin! You’re not thinking of leaving me alone, are you?”

But Ah Mo clung to her stubbornly, imploring with a pout, “Don’t do that, come on, let’s go.”

And so, with relentless insistence, she dragged Bai Xunyin to the end of the corridor and made a turn—it was the exam room where Yu Luoyin was taking the test.

Bai Xunyin was reluctantly dragged along and couldn’t find her voice; she was so frustrated that she wanted to bite Ah Mo.

Of all the timing, Sheng Churan happened to be waiting at the entrance of that exam room, and Zhong Qin was there with him.

When Ah Mo forcefully brought Bai Xunyin over, they faced off with the continuous stream of people coming out of the examination room.

Among them was Yu Luoyin. Walking lazily with his backpack slung over one shoulder and hands in his pockets, he had a languid gait. Sheng Churan immediately approached him with a bright smile.

From a distance, their conversation couldn’t be heard, but Yu Luoyin’s eyes remained cold and aloof, and he hadn’t spoken a word. Blocked by Sheng Churan, a hint of impatience flashed in his clear and elegant eyes.

In front of the tall and slender young man stood a girl who only reached his shoulder. Her figure was slim and delicate, and from afar…

They seem to be incredibly compatible.

Whether in appearance, popularity, or even in their “healthy physiques”.

Bai Xunyin inexplicably felt like her eyes were pricked, causing her to lower her gaze to break the connection.

However, Ah Mo beside her wouldn’t let that happen. She decided to ‘help her out’ and loudly shouted, “Yu Luoyin!”

Her voice was loud enough that almost everyone in the corridor heard it, including the originally indifferent young man. Yu Luoyin was somewhat surprised and looked over. His clear eyes collided with Bai Xunyin’s.

There was a hint of nervousness in the girl’s eyes, akin to the uneasiness and restlessness felt after unintentionally discovering someone’s ‘secret.’

Yu Luoyin paused for a brief moment, suddenly sensing that there was something intriguing in Bai Xunyin’s eyes at that moment.

Finally…

The girl had managed to look him directly in the eyes.

Yet, being somewhat thin-skinned, she shot a slightly annoyed glare at Ah Mo standing next to her, shook off her hand, and turned to run away.

“Here,” Yu Luoyin tossed his backpack to the nearby Lu Ye and was about to bypass Sheng Churan, who was blocking his way, to catch up to Bai Xunyin.

“Yu Luoyin!”

Sheng Churan felt like she was making a complete fool of herself in front of everyone. She saw that Yu Luoyin was about to chase after Bai Xunyin, and finally, unable to hold back, her eyes welled up with tears as she asked with a tone of grievance, “What do you mean by this?”

Yu Luoyin’s steps faltered slightly, and he turned back to frown at her, “What about me?”

From start to finish, it was this girl who had been chasing after him.

Wasn’t it her refusal to accept it that was the problem?

There were so many people who liked him; he didn’t need to be held responsible for other people’s teenage emotions, right?

“I’ve been standing right in front of you, and you act like you haven’t seen me. The moment Bai Xunyin appeared, you chased after her and even added her on WeChat!”

Sheng Churan was feeling extremely wronged, not caring that there were students coming and going, looking curiously at them, “What’s so special about her? Bai Xunyin, she’s nothing but a mute!”

And why did she have to lose to this mute girl again and again?

From the school’s beauty contest to Yu Luoyin, Sheng Churan was nearly driven mad by her jealousy.

Hearing the word ‘mute,’ Yu Luoyin’s originally impatient expression turned cold and sharp.

He turned his head to look at Sheng Churan, his smile a bit sardonic, “Do you know where you fall short compared to Bai Xunyin?”

Sheng Churan was indignant, “I’m not falling short compared to her!”

“Having confidence is a good thing, but…”

Yu Luoyin’s smile grew slightly, but his tone was frank, “Calling others ‘mute,’ yet if your mouth is only used for idle chatter, it’s nothing to boast about either.”

With that, Yu Luoyin paid no further attention to the stunned Sheng Churan and briskly caught up to Bai Xunyin.

As he passed by Ah Mo, who was enjoying the spectacle, he muttered softly, “Thanks.”
