Incurable Pain | Chapter 62

Idle and with nothing to do, Bai Xunyin decided to talk about her blind date with Mu Anping over the phone.

Skipping over some of the complicated and redundant words in between, such as Mu Anping asking for forgiveness, she got straight to the point.

This series of bombshells left Ah Mo on the other end completely stunned. After a full half-minute of silence, she awkwardly said, “So you rejected Mu Anping within a day and then got together with Yu Luoyin?”

Damn, she truly was something.

Bai Xunyin felt her summary was somewhat funny, but it was true. She smiled and said, “Yes.”

“Oh my god, if Mu Anping finds out, he’ll be furious. Too bad he doesn’t have your WeChat to see your moments, hahaha.”

Actually, Ah Mo didn’t specifically know what had happened between Bai Xunyin and Mu Anping in the past, but she felt it wasn’t necessary to know. She was biased towards Bai Xunyin anyway, unreasonably protective of her.

Bai Xunyin hated Mu Anping, so Ah Mo hated him too.

Bai Xunyin knew it well. Somewhere deep inside her, she felt incredibly soft.

Unconsciously, she couldn’t help but coquettishly say, “Ah Mo, you’re really nice.”

“Oh, don’t flirt with me. Save it for Yu Luoyin.”

Whenever Bai Xunyin’s cold voice softened, it always had a somewhat “bone-softening” effect on people.

Ah Mo couldn’t help but tease her, then thought for a moment and asked, “But I’m really curious, Mu Anping and Yu Luoyin, two bastards who are equally despicable, how did you end up agreeing to the latter?”

Having known each other for twenty years, she understood Bai Xunyin too well—she seemed easygoing, but she was actually more stubborn than anyone else.

Bai Xunyin remained silent for a while before softly saying, “Maybe because… I like him.”

After all, human nature was hypocritical. The standards for dealing with someone you like and someone you don’t like are naturally divided into two.

After satisfying Ah Mo’s curiosity and hanging up the phone, Bai Xunyin took off her hairband and sat up straight at her desk.

After hesitating for a moment, she pulled out a thin notebook from the shelf on the desk.

This was a diary she didn’t use much.

It was perhaps more like something for venting emotions rather than a “diary.”

Only when her emotions were particularly turbulent, extreme, or when there were major fluctuations, would Bai Xunyin take out the notebook to record her feelings.

It was more like a monologue, a confession.

In elegant and sharp handwriting, she wrote the numbers “317” at the top of the blank page—

[Today, Yu Luoyin told me about some things he’s dealing with at the hospital and at work.]

[The child from 317 made me realize that the word “accident” often brings more despair after a desperate situation turns around.]

[The child and his parents, facing the prospect of death due to congenital vascular malformations, must have been overjoyed upon hearing about possible new treatment options. Who could have predicted the sudden accident that caused him to die in such a surprising manner after more than a year in the hospital?]

[Accidents are terrifying. I admit I’m starting to feel afraid.]

[So I decided to be with Yu Luoyin.]

Bai Xunyin wrote word by word, occasionally furrowing her brows lightly before continuing to write, conducting a ruthless “self-examination”—

[This incident made me realize Yu Luoyin’s sense of responsibility. And this morning, in the stairwell, I realized that he doesn’t have sexual needs for me.]

[Talking about sex may sound vulgar, but it might just be the most truthful inner desire. No matter how bright a person seems, there must be a dark side.]

[What’s difficult is the firmness to resist temptation when it arises.]

[I probably never forgot about Yu Luoyin. For six years, every day, since I met him after coming back from Linlan, whether at the hospital, at school gatherings, or even seeing his mother, he’s been unforgettable.]

[So why be so stubborn? Life lasts only a few decades. How many days can one truly enjoy?]

[I know Yu Luoyin’s family background, parents, and friends are all very different from mine, but I still couldn’t help but follow my heart’s most honest desire.]

[It might be a bit irresponsible, but isn’t life supposed to have a few reckless moments?]

Word by word, sometimes contradictory, sometimes delving deep into her own heart.

Only in the empty notebook could Bai Xunyin record without reservation all her thoughts and feelings, the dark side she couldn’t speak of to anyone.

When she finally put down the pen, it was almost one o’clock in the morning.

Bai Xunyin’s straight back felt a bit tense with fatigue. She couldn’t help but stretch with a soft yawn, her sweater riding up to reveal a small piece of delicate white waist.

Her gaze inadvertently lowered, and she saw two distinct marks on her fair skin.

Perhaps when they were downstairs, Yu Luoyin had hugged her waist and left those finger marks. Even after more than half an hour, the marks were still visible, indicating he had used quite some force.

Bai Xunyin couldn’t help but bite her lower lip and chuckled, then bent down to pick up her clothes to wash up.

It wasn’t until she finally lay down in bed that she found a moment to glance at her phone. In an instant, she felt a bit overwhelmed by the dozens of unread messages.

Most of them were naturally from Yu Luoyin, and his heart felt like it was in a dream, still restless even after spending several hours together and wanting to be affectionate even after parting.

But Bai Xunyin was too busy to notice. She quickly glanced through the messages, most of which were Yu Luoyin’s playful and spoiled messages after not being able to find her.

She smiled and casually responded with a few words.

As for messages from others, she didn’t even bother to skim through them, let alone reply.

Only when Sister Yan sent a message asking, “Xiaobai, do you have a boyfriend now? Is it the guy I introduced to you today, Xiao Mu?” did she reply with a simple “No.”

And then… there was a message from Yu Shitian.

As the only one who had both Yu Luoyin’s and her WeChat, naturally, she saw the “official announcement” moments posted by both of them.

There was no need to say what happened next.

Yu Shitian was equally shocked as Ah Mo. Messages came one after another, even two missed calls, but unfortunately, Bai Xunyin had just turned her phone on silent and didn’t hear any of them.

“Sister, what’s going on between you and my brother? Are you together?”

“Oh my god, you’re a bit amazing, actually able to handle my brother! But I remember last time you said it wasn’t suitable, what happened during this time? Spill the tea!”

“…”

“Sister, where did you go? Why aren’t you answering me? I want to hear the gossip, wuwuwu!”

Bai Xunyin felt that this matter might not be explained clearly in a few words on WeChat, so she decided to call Yu Shitian.

Yu Shitian picked up immediately, screaming a couple of times before hastily asking, “Sister, what’s going on between you guys!”

Bai Xunyin absentmindedly played with her hair as she answered, “Haven’t you asked your brother?”

“He’s not picking up my calls!” Yu Shitian whined on the other end, sounding quite aggrieved.

“How could you both treat me like this when I’m the one who brought you together, playing matchmaker and cupid?!”

Her nonsense made Bai Xunyin smile, and she casually admitted, “Thanks for being our ‘cupid’.”

Yu Shitian was frantic on the other end, “Oh my god, you admitted it! But you guys have already made it official, what’s going on? Tell me!”

Bai Xunyin casually said a few words, “We just met after the blind date and had a good impression of each other. We happened to meet a couple more times…”

Although what she said wasn’t entirely true, it wasn’t a lie either.

However, even though Yu Shitian initially introduced them with the intention of “matchmaking,” seeing them actually become a couple still felt a bit strange.

She thought Bai Xunyin had a cold and elegant temperament, not to mention her academic achievements. Although her brother was a bit of a scoundrel, he had no shortcomings in various aspects. The two of them were a perfect match in terms of appearance alone. But Yu Shitian couldn’t help but feel that their progress was a bit too fast.

“You and my brother are both like iron trees, not very fond of dating…”

Yu Shitian murmured, “Could it be that by getting together, two negatives make a positive?”

Could it be that career-driven individuals are attracted to each other?

Bai Xunyin found her peculiar train of thought amusing and didn’t interrupt.

“In fact, sister, you and my brother are quite compatible, but there’s one thing that I’m still worried about.”

Yu Shitian said with a sigh after praising them, “Sister, do you have time tomorrow to meet with me?”

Bai Xunyin squinted, feeling a bit puzzled, but still said, “I won’t go to the cafeteria for lunch tomorrow afternoon. Shall we go out to eat together?”

“Great, great.” Yu Shitian happily agreed.

“See you tomorrow.”

After hanging up the phone, Bai Xunyin lay quietly on the bed for a while before suddenly realizing why Yu Shitian had hesitated to speak earlier.

She couldn’t help but smile, her confusion from earlier dissipating in an instant, and she soon fell into a sweet sleep.

When they met for lunch the next day, Yu Shitian, with her charming smile, couldn’t hide her worries.

She ordered the dishes, and when Bai Xunyin came over and had a few sips of tea, she couldn’t help but sigh, “Sister, do you really like my brother?”

Bai Xunyin knew exactly what she was thinking.

She just nodded and smiled, “Yes, I do.”

“But… sister, did you forget what I told you last time? My brother still has an unforgettable ex-girlfriend, right?”

Yu Shitian suddenly realized that her excitement from seeing her beloved sister become her sister-in-law quickly turned into unease.

She knew how deep Yu Luoyin’s feelings were for his high school “ex-girlfriend.” Six years had passed, and he hadn’t dated anyone else. Now, he had accepted Bai Xunyin, whom he had just met, so quickly.

Wasn’t it just “love at first sight”?

Yu Shitian regretted introducing Bai Xunyin to Yu Luoyin more and more.

Seeing Bai Xunyin pick up the teacup and take a sip, her expression calm as she said, “I know,” but not taking it seriously, Yu Shitian couldn’t help but feel anxious.

“Sister, my brother has a lingering attachment to his past love. It’s really hard to deal with!”

Yu Shitian couldn’t help clenching her fist, speaking seriously.

“Sister, actually, my brother looks decent, but you might want to reconsider.”

“No need to reconsider, I…”

“Ah, it must be my brother using his charm to fool you.”

Yu Shitian was impatient, not waiting for Bai Xunyin to finish speaking before sighing and lamenting, “Sister, please don’t let my brother take advantage of you. He was so affectionate towards his ex-girlfriend before, I originally introduced you guys hoping you’d get to know each other slowly, but now that it’s happened so quickly, I feel like he’s after your appearance!”

“Xiaotian.”

Bai Xunyin couldn’t help but grab the hand of the indignant girl, earnestly saying, “I am your brother’s ex-girlfriend.”
