Chapter 437 – Yellow dust
Sky was running through the woods, feet slamming the soil littered with broken branches and weeds, his head barely in one piece.
Inside his body, wine instead of blood coursed through his veins.
He cursed violently, red hair flapping wildly as the air crashed on his face with his speed.
Sky’s face was crunched in worry, his clothes the same ones he was sleeping in on the floor of his room.
His head was pounding. But his worry for his friend overwhelmed that pain.
"Attacking Order Draco?" Sky muttered in dismay, twisting and zipping through the trees of the forest, going straight to Order Draco.
Even now, he didn’t know how Uncle Azad dared to do such a thing. It was simply inconceivable.
’I am not going fast enough!’ Sky yelled inside his mind, almost blaming his master for warning him too late.
He wished to use his own power to go faster, but there was one thing hindering him. His whole being was protesting against him.
It was like something was whispering, no, screaming even, to him to not go; to stay at home or from afar and watch the event unfold.
It was a strange sensation, but not a new one for Sky.
Numerous times during the past 2 years this feeling saved him from lethal danger. And if that same feeling was occurring here again...
’Death...I am going to die if I go.’ He realized, but his feet didn’t stop.
He continued to run towards Order Draco relentlessly.
The closer he got, the stronger his feeling of dread. It was reaching a point where his thoughts were completely clouded by it.
At some point, Sky managed to get close enough to the Order to feel the ground writhing like a man twisting in pain.
Sky would have sworn the ground was screaming in pain.
Sounds of explosions and the destruction of buildings blared across the surroundings, accompanied by blasts of crimson and yellow that bled through the sky.
The residual power that was being emitted from the clash was enough to make Sky instantly halt, his heart beating so hard his ribs were hurting.
He stood there, eyes fixed on the heavens, both transfixed by the beauty and wretchedness of the sight.
There, Sky noticed a hulking man, with muscles rippling as if having minds of their own. Two giant yellow battleaxes were nestled in his two hands — crackling and filled with tribal tattoos; the man stood like a Deity made of flesh and bones.
He was surrounded by dozens of dragons of different sizes and colors, their mouths stretched wide in continuous blasts of attack and roars that made the world scream.
His body was no longer what he remembered, but Sky would not mistake Uncle Azad for anyone else.
His attack seemed to focus on one purple dragon.
And that was when Sky finally understood. No, he already knew. But that sight confirmed his worst nightmares.
Uncle Azad was doing all of this to avenge Maryam.
All because he couldn’t even honor the death of his friend and the burden she put on him.
That thought was like a hammer blow, and Sky’s knees crashed on the floor whose weeds were burned by the wisps of power from the battle.
His mind was hazy for a moment — guilt, anger, and fear knotted together tightly, chaining him down. But Sky immediately shook his head and raised himself up.
"I...I need to help him!" He growled, fighting the power inside of him that was hell-bent on making him stay or run away.
He took a difficult step forward, only to stop abruptly, his head snapping to the left side at the sound of heavy breathing.
There, Sky saw a woman sprawling against a tree, wounded so badly it hurt to see, her left eye ruined and bleeding.
A dragon, Sky noticed instantly, crimson eyes narrowing.
"Help...me." The woman pleaded, looking at Sky through her crimson-tainted eyes, "h-help me."
Sky was not given a chance to think more as he felt nearby presences.
He turned his head, squinted his eyes through the shallow darkness, and saw draconians in purple armor running straight at him with vicious faces.
"The Fat’s players group." Sky muttered, instantly connecting the dots between the woman and them.
He raised his head again, looking at a distance at the withered shape of his friend trying one last time to kill The Fat.
Azad was going to die, Sky realized.
But at that time, something just flashed inside his mind. It was something he had never used since the moment he acquired it. However, Sky believed it was time.
Time to use his own Domain.
Not on himself — Sky decided, feeling the approach of the killers — but on Uncle Azad himself.
’It should be— No,’ his eyes hardened, ’It is possible.’ He declared, his power shimmering around him, then activated his domain.
Azad became momentarily shrouded in crimson light.
Sky’s Domain was a strange thing.
Inside his Domain, Sky could choose to be something, or someone, or have this kind of power at such a level during the whole duration of the Domain.
He just needed to believe it enough and without doubt, and it would unconditionally happen.
So what would happen if he applied that to Uncle Azad?
Sky didn’t know, and he didn’t give himself the time to observe the effect as he took the bleeding woman inside his arms and bolted away before Fat’s Players arrived.
His last prayer being one sent to the Heavens for his friend.
...
Instantly, as he fell on one knee, his body crumbling like a leathered corpse, Azad felt something flood inside his body.
The power of Sky embraced him in a fleeting but intense celestial red light, the information of the domain whispered inside his mind.
Realizing the situation, Azad couldn’t help but bark a laugh, tears of joy swelling in his eyes, his heart warmed by Sky’s action towards him.
Suddenly, dying didn’t seem so bad, after all.
"You fucking worm," The Fat growled through his gruff voice, staring at Azad with intense murderous intent, "Death would be a—!"
The Fat fell immediately silent as Uncle Azad began to glow in an intense yellow light.
The man himself stared at it, confused for a moment, then his eyes widened in pure shock.
Before any of the dragons moved, Azad’s body crumbled into yellow dust scattered on all sides with the whipping wind.
...
"Truly not bad." Kaden muttered, looking at the panel in front of him,
[New Trait obtained.]
[Trait: Two-Hearts – Heart of Fire, Heart of Runes.]
[You have twin hearts. Your blood pumps faster, you react faster, stronger and nastier.]
[Your Fire affinity is reaching a critical level. Your Runes affinity is reaching a critical level.]
[Increase more to step into the next rank.]
[Your Stats: Strength, Intelligence and Mana have reached their limit.]
His stats reaching their limit was already a good sign, Kaden nodded, pleased. It left only half of them now. And with an Evolution Stone, he would finally step into the Epithet rank.
Kaden was eager, and this made him add to his list of goals the search for an evolution stone.
He hoped to be lucky enough to find it on his way.
’But before all that...’ he wheeled towards Rea, watching her crouched in front of Rudolph, staring intensely at him. The kind of stare an alchemist would give at his experimental subject.
The young man was still sleeping.
"Why," Kaden began, walking towards her, "are you looking at him in this way?"
Rea’s answer was swift.
"I have gained new insights, Kaden, in both emotions and runes." She said, "I realized that emotions are not only the emotion itself..."
She turned her head and looked at him, red eyes narrowing,
"Emotion is also how your body reacts to it."
"An obvious thing. Don’t tell me you just understood it? Did enhancing your brain change nothing?" Kaden’s face was filled with mock pity, "It’s kind of worrying."
"It’s not that simple." Rea snarled, "This realization made me think that Fear is not the only thing I can control."
She pointed her index finger at him, "Think of what I can do if I can control your heart rate, your blood pressure...or even the contraction of your muscles and the soreness of your throat..."
Kaden’s eyes immediately went wide.
Rea grinned, excited to a whole new level,
"Yes, through Fear and Sorrow, I will be able to control the whole human body. Sorrow’s breath, can you imagine that?"
’...wow.’ Blanche whispered in both awe and hidden apprehension.
’Her power...is too strong, isn’t it?’
Kaden just shook his head, too tired to think about this new way of power application of Rea.
"Blood and ashes, Rea, let’s just bloody end this quest."
He put his hand on Rudolph, on his head.
"Are you jealous of my new power, Kaden?" Rea’s voice was slurred now, even smug.
"I practically gave you this new insight. Now you are acting like this?" He clicked his tongue, "Ungrateful."
"Sorrow’s breath, you are indeed jealous."
Kaden ignored her. He closed his eyes, and then...
"Seed of Prometheus."
Fire erupted and enveloped Rudolph.
