Chapter 439: True Soul Core
Chapter 439: Chapter 439: True Soul Core
Chapter 439 – True Soul Core
Kaden watched silently as the screaming, howling souls bolted towards him with frightening speed.
He did nothing, feeling his Trait Soulbrand pulse outward, making the approaching souls stop an inch from him, swirling around him relentlessly.
Beside him, Rea took in the sight with an arched eyebrow, wondering what was happening. But before she could even voice out her question, the souls in front of her changed.
They swirled upon themselves, and transformed into balls. The balls were different, each one of them having different size, texture, color and even aura.
And Rea could sense one more thing than Kaden; it was the degree and type of fear emanating from each of these Souls Cores.
The fears were different, each one rotted into the selves of the ones these souls belonged to.
Instantly, Rea’s brow furrowed, sensing a rather troublesome thing brewing up.
And indeed,
DING!
The Will chimed, and Kaden lifted his eyes overhead, as if able to see things veiled from common sense with his crimson star-lit eyes.
[The Souls Cores of these dead beings no longer wish to go into the embrace of The Tree.]
Rea stepped closer to Kaden, standing at his right, their elbows touching each other.
The Will continued calmly.
[They have decided, in their own will, to rest within you. It’s an event that would not have been possible. But once again, Prometheus, or rather, Asclepius, you changed the path of an important being — a very unique being.]
’I am not liking where this thing is going.’ Kaden thought,
"I don’t like this." Rea said aloud, frowning.
"Aye." He nodded, feeling the same thing. Somehow, he felt like not letting the souls go to this famous Tree would cause him too much trouble.
Maybe not now, but definitely in the future.
’I have enough on my plate, blood and ashes, I don’t need one more.’ He groaned inwardly, but The Will didn’t seem to care about his feelings,
[You have earned the right to absorb the Souls Cores.]
"What would happen if I do?" He asked, undoubtedly curious. He half expected to be ignored, but surprisingly, The Will answered.
[You will live their lives.] The words were direct, [You will feel what they have felt, like what they liked, hate what they hated...]
The more The Will continued, the more both Kaden and Rea’s faces seemed to twist.
[You will have their memories. And if you are lucky, you will have their skills.]
[And you will unlock Soul Energy.]
Finally The Will stopped its consecutive notifications, leaving behind last words that made Kaden finally know why Soulbrand was so eager.
It was because he could finally use Soul Energy if he absorbed these soul cores, and with that, his Trait would most probably evolve.
But was it worth the risk?
The risk of living lives that were not his? The risk of bringing inside memories he never lived and that belonged to someone else?
What would happen to him then? Would he stay the same?
Kaden already knew that he would not stay the same. And because of that, he would have refused to accept this no matter the power it would give him.
He was sure, after all, that this was not the only way to unlock Soul Energy.
’But I can do something else with this. I just need to find how.’ Kaden mused internally, feeling Rea’s eyes on him.
He turned his head towards her.
"Maybe you should accept." Rea said first, tilting her head in an eager manner.
"Why?"
"With multiple foreign memories inside your head, there is a high chance you become crazier than now. Then we can do many things together."
"Blood and ashes, Rea, is that all you think about?"
"Am I wrong?"
"What if I lose myself in those memories?"
"Sorrow take me," Rea rolled her eyes, "You are not that weak-minded, Kaden. Your Will is too strong for you to be taken over."
Kaden halted, cocking his head, then nodded after a few seconds, "That’s true."
"Then why are you hesitating?"
"There must be a better way than just accept them like this." He replied, his mind churning to find that way.
The God-Touched stared at him long and hard, her eyes narrowing in reflection. Soon, they widened, brightened like an oil lamp in thick darkness,
"Well, Sorrow bless me, I might have an idea, Kaden." She said, nodding to herself in a proud manner, crossing her arms.
"Which is?" Kaden looked at her, doubtful.
"We have an origin core," Rea began, "don’t we?"
"Yes."
"And you have these souls cores. Why don’t you create a True Soul Core in the same way an Origin Core functions?" She tilted her head, "A core created by the residual selves of the dead souls."
She paused, nodded to herself again,
"Such a sorrowful thought. It strangely suits you."
"It certainly sounds ominous." Kaden said.
"Do you have a better solution?"
"No, I—!"
"Then, Sorrow take your soul, just do this and let’s get out of here." She frowned deeply, "Do you believe I have unlimited time? I have duties in the Church and things to achieve to be the Saintess."
"Easy, woman. But you are right," Kaden sighed, wondering why he was being so hesitant, "I have things to do, too. And I doubt time is in my favor."
"Time is in the favor of none."
"A merciless thing, it certainly is." Kaden nodded, then closed his eyes, his mind thinking of how to create this Soul Core Rea just told him.
It sounded strange, but it should be theoretically possible.
And at that instant,
[You have obtained: Bloodline of The Devourer of Souls, Notebook of the Forbidden Alchemist.]
They received their full rewards, and Kaden’s mind immediately thought of something.
He smiled, cracking his neck.
"Synthesis," he whispered to his favorite Trait, "You are going to go harder this time."
His Trait could not still speak, but Kaden could feel faint fragmented emotions coming out of it.
He was still amazed by this phenomenon.
"Do you want me to give you what I have obtained?" Rea said, seeing Kaden closing his eyes, "It might help you."
He shook his head, "What I have is enough for the task. Well, hopefully. Keep yours, you might find a new insight in emotions with the help of them."
At that, Rea simply nodded, and Kaden focused deeply. What he was about to do was something unheard of, at least to him.
So keeping away all distractions, he ordered Synthesis into action,
’Soulbrand, bloodline of The Devourer of Souls and Soul cores...take all of these and create a Soul—’
And right at that instant,
[You are being teleported outside the dungeon.]
’—Core.’ Kaden finished his words, and his eyes went wide as they were transported outside the dungeon, while at the same time the process began.
A white, pulsing cocoon appeared and began to weave around him. Kaden had only enough time before he was completely covered to see a harrowing sight.
Kaden and Rea’s hearts immediately dropped, a phenomenal surge of fear and dread freezing their souls themselves.
"Blood and ashes..." Kaden’s voice shook.
"Sorrow burn me..." Rea almost fell to the ground.
As in front of them, or rather, all around them...
The Frosted Bridge and the Eight Mountains were no more. Only an ashes and dust and smoke-filled world remained, with slithering monsters rising enough to chill their hearts.
They could feel it instinctively...
...They were in a completely new reality.
