Chapter 442 – Escape
Loup was doing his absolute best to not curse the ancestors of the man running beside him.
He didn’t even know why he himself was running, except the fact that his impulses took the better of him. Yet now it was far too late.
The knowledge of who was trailing behind them eluded his feeble and anxious mind, but Loup knew that stopping at that instant would mean his death.
’Grandmother, please bless me!!’ He squealed inside his mind, tears swelling in his eyes as he zigzagged through the alleys of Fenrir’s city, going deeper into where few people walked.
He didn’t know how he was going so fast, but at that instant only instinct guided him.
The wind slammed wildly against his face, yet Loup could still hear the wrathful voice of their pursuer.
It was close. Dangerously close.
Beside him, the handsome man was muttering constantly under his breath, his eyes — pink, with pupils shaped like dozens of hearts stacked together — darting around as if searching a way out of this hurdle.
But if it was indeed what he was looking for, the man found nothing.
Loup began to lose hope, feeling the woman even closer. He could almost feel the loud breathing of the woman on his neck.
He shivered.
Yet suddenly, they heard something despite the howling of the wind. The three of them snapped their heads towards it.
There, they found a small broken wheel turning, turning and turning.
But that was not what caught their attention.
"Here!" Dancer bellowed, pointing with his index finger at a small dark-shrouded alley just where the wheel emerged from.
Beside that alley was a T-shaped intersection.
Dancer ran towards it, and Loup and White followed instinctively. Soon enough, they reached it and delved inside it hastily.
Loup watched as the strange man took two small balls out of his space ring, and slammed them onto the ground with crushing strength.
They broke, and a cloud of smoke and dust rose, hiding them within.
Jade arrived there seconds after, her muscles flexing and contracting, her yellow beastly eyes dripping with impulsive anger.
"Do you really think this can save you?" Jade’s voice was a growl of irritation.
She raised a hand, then clenched it into a tight fist. A small shockwave erupted from it, angry veins framing her forearm and hand entirely.
She took a punching stance, the air crackling as she pulled her right hand back, ready to pulverize everything in front of her.
However just at that instant, when her hand was about to slam into the pale smoke and send it to oblivion, Jade instinctively stopped, seeing a small white cat bursting through the smoke, running away in another direction.
That small halt was brief, but it was more than enough.
A hand, the grip like one of merciless iron, stopped her attack.
"What are you doing, Jade?" Daggy growled, turning forcefully her daughter to face her with a swirl of her hand.
Right at that moment, behind Jade, Dancer and Loup slithered away swiftly, going towards where the white cat just ran.
Without showing it on her face, Daggy’s heart relaxed heavily.
Jade turned her head then, feeling the presence just disappear. Her face twisted as she whirled to her mother.
"It’s me who should ask what the fuck you are doing." She spat, slapping her hand away from her own.
Daggy let go, took a couple of steps back and watched her daughter with stern eyes.
"You are the mother or I am the mother here?" She said, crossing her arms under her heavy breasts, "Or do you need to be reminded of your place?"
Jade laughed harshly, "Mother, don’t try to change the subject."
She took a step forward, closer to her mother, their broad chests touching each other,
"Why was a man inside your workshop, and why did he run away when I came in?"
She asked, her face hard like stone,
"Mother, are you—!"
"We will talk about it later." Daggy interrupted her words, taking her hand forcefully, "With what you have just done, your father will soon be aware of this."
She clicked her tongue in irritation.
Before Jade even spoke, Daggy dragged her daughter away, her body blurring with great speed, leaving behind a cloud of smoke and dust.
...
Smoke and dust slammed down on Rea as she ducked left — Kaden on her back — escaping the razor-sharp nail of those harrowing monsters.
The impact of the attack with the ground sent her flying like a rock thrown into the air, making her shift her position midair, the cocoon of Kaden plastered on her chest, as she fell viciously down.
Her back cracked.
Her eyes widened, the breath knocked out of her lungs for a brief second. Right there, stars, as bleak as her current situation, flooded her vision.
The pain was wrenching.
However, Rea knew she had no time to indulge in the pain.
The monsters were coming from all sides, and she had learned by now that trying to fight them was a foolish idea. Especially in this space.
The wide gaping wound in the left flank of her stomach was proof enough. Her blood was still spilling in waves, barely managed to be kept at bay thanks to her power.
But even her power was struggling. The attack of these monsters — or even this space itself — seemed to wear down her power.
There was something in this dust and smoke that made Rea sometimes even forget how to use her power.
Her mind was getting ground down like stone, losing memories and habits bit by bit.
It was maddening.
’Damn Kaden!’ Rea cursed, her face pale, her lips bone dry as she stood up again.
At least, she tried. However, her legs were so weak, so bloody and swollen that she slammed down on the smoky ground almost instantly.
The pain became greater.
Her heart skipped a beat, and she lifted her head just enough to see two monsters striking down.
The wind seemed to whistle and part away as the attack swept down.
Using all her power, Rea bellowed madly, veins creasing her whole face, causing white flowers shaped like teardrops to bloom in front of her.
A wall was thus created.
But the God-Touched knew that it would not last long. So she used all her power and enhanced her legs and arms, picked up Kaden and dashed away.
The cocoon of Kaden was slowly receding, proving that Kaden’s return was not that far away. Then again, Rea was not sure she would be able to keep it up until that time.
She didn’t know how much time passed — if even time passed in this accursed space — but she was at her limit.
’Sorrow take me, is there anything else than smoke and dust?’ She cried inwardly, looking around her.
Nothing but smoke and dust and ashes existed, but the more Rea ran, the more she seemed to see some kind of structures.
And at some point, her eyes soaked with gray light of fear saw a bridge in the far distance.
Hope burst inside her like a lamp in dark space.
She turned her head over her shoulder, and saw now a shift in the monsters.
The more she ran towards the bridge, the more the monsters looked more human-like, their shapes changing into something she recognized.
But that transmutation only brought an even greater threat into her mind and heart.
So she turned her head back forward, and used all her power to increase her speed.
Having the power of fear in that situation was a blessing, yet it was also a curse. Because there was a limit to the amount of fear someone could bear before breaking.
Rea’s limit was high. Exceptionally high, even.
But even she was going to reach that limit very soon. And no matter how broken her mind already was...
’Fast! Faster! Faster!’ She bellowed inside her mind, feeling her mind cracking, something slithering inside.
...this one would be something even Rea would not recover from.
