Chapter 449: Seed of Frost
Chapter 449: Chapter 449: Seed of Frost
Chapter 449 – Seed of Frost
Blue and black light enveloped Meris in a protective embrace, causing the whole dungeon to shake like a naked man in cold weather.
The Third Ancestor instantly backed away another couple of steps, looking at the sight with both awe and sadness flooding her face.
’She truly succeeded.’ She clenched her jaw, feeling the ice elements around her shouting in joy at the awakening of their rightful heiress.
Not only that, even her own body — made of ice, water, snow and fog — was desperately forcing her to put one knee down, bow her head and wait until the Princess finished her enlightenment.
It was something the Third Ancestor didn’t quite mind, or even care to add. She would gladly give her life for her princess, for she was nothing but the Maid of Frost, given the duty to take care of the Heiress.
However, at that instant, she was submerged by an even greater sentiment — one of uncertainty and apprehension.
’It was never supposed to be this early.’ She mused, balling her fist tightly, feeling the coldness of the dungeon increasing, ’However, the inheritance of Master is already waking up, and my lady needs an even greater control of ice to hope to keep it in check.’
Only the Seed of Frost could be of help.
There was nothing worse than receiving a power you were not capable of handling.
It would first destroy you, then it would be the turn of everything around you.
It didn’t end there.
’The power of a Primordial...’
That...that was a kind of power many coveted, yet none managed to obtain except those born with it.
But now, an anomaly inside the rank of Primordial was born, and soon about to be completely awakened.
’The Primordials are reclusive. They do not tolerate anything or anyone other than themselves in their midst.’
So what would happen to her lady?
That was all too obvious. And that was why her Master sent his own daughter away, and chose to keep his own distance.
But rare were secrets that remained secrets until the end.
The Primordial of Frost was not that lucky. For in front of her eyes, the Third Ancestor witnessed the reveal of that very same secret to the whole world.
She could feel it, outside...the whole City of Cats was trembling.
At that exact moment, the cocoon enveloping Meris popped like a balloon, sending molten light of blue and black all over the dungeon.
Those lights transformed into ice, remaining frozen in the air. The sight was oddly artistic, and arrayed in a strangely meaningful manner.
The Third Ancestor watched Meris, seeing that nothing changed in her except her skin going paler until one could believe no blood existed inside of her.
The princess mechanically stood up, each of her actions strange in a way that felt like a dance. A dance that made the surrounding environment forcefully fall into her own rhythm...her own rule.
Her hair was constantly shifting from ice to water to snow and fog in perfect harmony with her surroundings. If one looked closely, even her skin seemed to wobble. But it was hard to tell.
The Third Ancestor sucked a deep breath. Meris at that instant no longer felt like the human she smelled. Now she moved, walked and looked like something made of pure frost.
Her movements were stiff yet graceful, her silver eyes frigid yet stunningly beautiful, her body perfect as if sculpted by something out of the first shard of ice in existence.
Meris exhaled faintly, steaming out silver wisps that froze half of the dungeon in an instant.
She turned her head stiffly — her action causing ice to transmute into snow, her hair now matching the new element perfectly — and stared deeply at the Third Ancestor.
BADUM—!
The missing beat of Third’s heart was followed by her kneeling on the ground in front of Meris, her head ducked so low it felt like she wanted to snap her neck.
’Ah...I can no longer suppress myself.’ The Third Ancestor mused with a smile, ’My lady truly is the one.’
"I greet the Heiress." She spoke with reverence, acknowledging her lineage more than Meris herself.
Meris didn’t answer. Her eyes were flat, devoid of any light of feeling. She looked like some inhuman construct.
The Third Ancestor was not surprised, but she was worried. So she spoke rapidly, hoping that the preparations would indeed work like her Master predicted.
"My duty has been accomplished." She followed, "And with that..."
The Will chimed.
[You have completed your Trial.]
[You have obtained your reward: Seed of Frost.]
"...here, my lady."
The words of both The Will and the Third Ancestor were accompanied by the emergence of light in front of Meris.
The light was pure blue, before coalescing into the shape of a transparent snowflake. The atmosphere around shifted, storms of ice rising from the ground, filled with icicles, enveloping Meris entirely.
She stood unbothered, the ice itself not daring to come too close without her own consent.
The Daughter of Frost raised her hand, and brushed her index finger on the smooth surface of the Seed.
Her body shivered, feeling like it had received the greatest nourishment ever. Meris’s very existence was billowing in excitement, urging her to finally absorb the Seed.
She was very much excited, but in her current state, Meris was no longer one to be driven by emotions — no matter the type and intensity of them.
Her mind was calm like still water, unable to waver. Her heart was steady, with a wisp of warmth from the fire of Kaden keeping at its edge.
So she didn’t let herself be led by her impulse, and instead parted her lips.
"Who am I?" She asked, her voice like two sheets of ice scraping each other.
The Third Ancestor winced. She could no longer see Meris, for she was surrounded by a violent storm of ice, water, snow and fog.
Nevertheless, she still could notice her silver, mirror-like pair of eyes boring deep into her existence. Her eyes seemed to shift in accordance with the elements around.
It was a sight to behold. But the Third Ancestor knew she needed to answer.
"Your name? Your status? Your duty?" She asked, "what do you wish to know, my lady?"
"Everything."
The Third Ancestor paused a bit, then straightaway, "You are Meris Elamin Frost, daughter of the Primordial of Frost and the Box of Lightnings. You have inherited the power of both, yet could only hold one within you. Frost has been chosen."
Meris listened carefully.
"You are the Princess of Frost, and everything made of Frost is yours to command. And as for your duty..."
Here, the Third Ancestor bowed her head even deeper,
"...to be strong. For your birth was one that didn’t please everyone."
"Is my mother the Box of Lightning?" She asked next.
"Yes, my Lady."
"She is not human?"
Third shook her head, "No human could bear the child of a Prime. Your Mother is not human. And I am not allowed to tell you what she is. But know one thing, your birth was a miracle. It truly is, my lady. No one is like you; no one will ever be like you."
’And that’s why, I am afraid, that you are alone in your endeavor, for no one could ever hope to understand you, my lady. For I don’t. And I won’t.’
Having received her answer, Meris closed her eyes briefly, thinking of the matter of Primordial and her own mother.
All of these made her something other than human. But then why?
Why was Dre fighting so hard to keep her humanity if she was not one to begin with?
Why couldn’t she just accept who — what — she was?
She didn’t know, and at that time, Meris couldn’t find the strength to care. So she grasped the Seed of Frost and accepted it within her.
The world froze, and Meris...
[You have created your domain.]
...achieved something worthy.
