Chapter 486 – Warborn [2]
‘The boy is dead, old bastard.’
“Aye. I can feel that too.” The man answered the voice inside his head, smiling lazily as he checked what looked like a soup hovering over a blazing purple fire.
His black hair was long and wild, falling over his face like the mane of a wild beast. His eyes were supposed to be hidden beneath it, but those red eyes cut through everything, bleeding into the world like open wounds.
He sat cross-legged on a strange object, wearing nothing but beast skin to cover himself, his muscled body a map of scars that could frighten a god.
The surroundings were strange. Dark, so dark the darkness felt tangible. Something one could touch, and even taste.
Only the purple cooking fire and his red eyes served as light — alongside the eyes watching him from above, outside a thin protected perimeter.
Monstrous eyes belonging to creatures no one would want to imagine. They surrounded him as if wishing nothing more than to devour him, yet not a single one dared take the first step.
Whether it was the thin film of fragmented weapons or the man himself holding them back, no one could say.
The strange being had long since grown used to their stares. Had even come to enjoy them after enough time. Loneliness was a dangerous thing.
Even for beings like him.
‘Aren’t you sad, old bastard?’ The voice — his Primordial Weapon — spoke with her usual disappointed tone. ‘The boy had promise. You knew it. Space had chosen him. If he had managed to properly ascend, something wonderful would have come of it.’
“But he didn’t, did he, Red?” The man shrugged, swirling the soup with the bone of one of the beasts watching him.
‘You left him on his own.’
“Now how can you blame me for that? Little Raven was the Second Anomaly in my bloodline. And you know how those types tend to work.”
He chuckled. “The First abandoned her duty and disappeared into some god-forsaken place—!”
‘The Red Passage.’ Red said precisely. ‘She went there to find her own Path. She told you that.’
“I already gave her one. Why didn’t she take it?” He shook his head. “If she had, I could have already killed all these annoying immortal things.”
‘Chosen ones like her never take a path other than their own. You know this. You are the same. You have been the same.’
The man shrugged lazily. “Maybe. Maybe not. Forget about that arrogant granddaughter of mine, alright? Coming back to little Raven…”
He sighed, shaking his head.
“…he was chosen by Space. Maybe that was why his mind always drifted, always expanding into things that shouldn’t concern him. Yet he didn’t listen, did he? I told him not to bond with that cursed bloodline. Did he listen? That damn poet.”
He pressed his lips in irritation. “We don’t need a poet in our bloodline, Red. You know that.”
“Now we’ve lost a Pillar in our battle against Them.” Another sigh. He tasted the soup, then cursed. “Children these days have no focus. Scarlet was better. She should have been chosen.”
‘Because she is like you.’
“That’s why I like her.”
‘You can feel her anger, can’t you?’ Red seemed to smirk. ‘She will go berserk… again.’
The man bared his sharp teeth. “Ah, let those useless gods taste some terror. A few deaths among them now and then never hurt anyone.”
Red fell silent for a moment, reaching with her authority through the Warborn bloodline, searching for something. After a moment she smiled.
‘All of them have woken up, it seems.’
“Even the First Chosen?”
‘I cannot reach her. The Red Passage is a strange place. Older than anything, even you and I.’
“Aye. A nasty thing it is. And the one she entered was worse.”
‘As expected of her.’ Red replied. ‘However, there is something else interesting, old bastard.’
“The youngest?” He guessed easily, smiling.
‘Oh, you noticed him?’
“Since the moment he was born, Red. Don’t take me for a fool.” He sneered. “He is the Third Chosen, after all.”
‘By whom?’
The man paused, lifted his head overhead, a smile on his dry lips. “I wonder myself, Red. But it’s not only one. Many have chosen him. As for why, that is something I would very much like to know someday.”
‘When will you meet him, like you met Scarlet and Raven and the others?’
“When I feel like fighting these bastards long enough to create a window.”
‘Not now?’
“Not now.”
‘Well. Let me tell you one — or rather two — of those who have chosen him, among the many.’
The man stilled. His wild hair moved like a mane as he listened closely to his Weapon, who always seemed to know more than him.
“Enlighten me, Red.” He hissed.
‘Ah, but of course.’ Red laughed, always enjoying the rare occasion of humbling her companion. ‘The first is obvious, isn’t it?’
“The Hero.” The man nodded. “That lovely but disgusting bastard. I don’t know how to feel about that one.”
‘I suppose we are in the same boat. The Shapeshifter is one strange kind of being. But let’s watch.’
“Aye. And the second?”
‘The Hero’s most hated enemy.’ Red said immediately, still grinning.
The strange man’s red eyes went wide. His body froze for a brief second. The bone slipped from his hand into the soup.
He almost shouted in rage, that bone had been with him for thousands of years.
He didn’t shout at the end, staying still.
“The Witch?” He muttered. “The Witch has chosen a man?”
‘Surprising, isn’t it? And stranger still, Biona did not choose that cast out boy even though he was the most qualified to inherit her {Seat}.’
“I don’t care about that devious little boy.” He shook his head. “I want to know how she chose him.”
‘Oh…’ Red began, then stopped. ‘I’ll tell you, if you promise me something, my love.’
He rolled his eyes. The watchers surrounding him shivered in sudden fear. Every time he did that, it meant he was about to act.
No one wanted him to act.
“Promise what?”
‘Give the youngest the opportunity to take the Test.’
He frowned. “Why? Is his Origin Weapon worthy?”
‘She is interesting enough. She can surprise me, I can feel it.’
He didn’t respond immediately, turning the implication over. “Then we must do it before he ascends.”
‘Yes. And looking at his path…’ Red smiled, ‘the boy will be daring. Like Scarlet.’
“You might be surprised that it won’t only be him who is daring now.” The man smiled. “We lost little Raven, Red. He was a strange man. But he was liked by all of us, despite his insufferable melodramatic personality.”
‘That’s exactly why we liked him, my love.’
He laughed. “Ah, that’s right, isn’t it.”
He exhaled slowly and rose from his seated position, which was the broken skull of some strange creature.
He cocked his head upward, looking at the dozens of eyes surrounding him.
“Still, Red. The one person who shouldn’t have died has died. My bloodline is in rage. And I admit…”
His face went dead cold.
“…that I am not very pleased with it either.”
‘Do you need me?’
“My bare hands are enough for today.” He said. “Just tell me about The Witch and the youngest while I beat some sense into these bastards.”
‘Ah yes, my love.’ Red smiled. ‘It all started when Biona — The Witch — blackmailed Kol’Riku into inflicting the youngest with her Blood Curse in a rather unique timeline.’
